Impact Of Trade And Fdi Openness On Wages In The Manufacturing Sector In China, Qianyi Chen

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of trade openness and foreign direct investment (FDI) on wages in China using a panel data set of 27 manufacturing sectors over the period of 2001 to 2016. The effects are separated into three groups: total industries, capital-intensive industries and labor-intensive industries. First, by comparing the determinants of three groups of industries, it shows that the impact of trade openness on wages only significant and positive in labor-intensive industries while the impact of FDI on wages is significantly positive in both capital-intensive industries and labor-intensive industries. E-commerce is rapidly developing along with the development of information technology in China. This paper is aimed at analyzing the contribution of E-commerce on the trading sector in China and estimating the macroeconomic and sectoral impact of E-commerce respectively by using fixed effect panel data based on the data from seven selected regions in China over the period of 2008-2016. The study found that E-commerce plays a significant and positive role in the economic growth at either macroeconomic level or sectoral level. Assessing Impacts Of Fta In Thailand With Special Emphasis On Trade Creation And Trade Diversion, Sawasdee Charoenchang

This paper uses ex-post gravity analysis to examine whether Thailand's 12 effective free trade agreements cause trade creation or trade diversion effect. The sample of the study covers 43 countries over the period of 1991-2016. The model is specified with the aim to obtain unbiased estimates of three FTA dummy variables, representing trades within and outside the trade blocs. This study is able to analyze only 7 out of 12 total FTAs due to multicollinearity problem. This research reexamines the augmented Solow's growth model to find the relationship between human capital and economic growth by using three different proxies for human capital. The first proxy of human capital is the proportion of labor force with secondary education that has been widely used in many studies. PISA score is the second proxy to human capital. It is regarded as being quality of education because this standardized test score could directly reflect the cognitive ability of individuals. This paper investigates the impact of Global Production Networks (GPNs) on the industrial development in 3 aspects; domestic value added, labor productivity, and export performance, employing Trade in Value Added database at the country-sector level from Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The estimation is based on pooled time series, cross section and period fixed effect covering Automotive industry in 4 selected ASEAN countries; Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines from 1995 to 2016. Using daily indices for several East Asian and Asian emerging stock markets from 5 January 1995 to 31 December 2018, this study investigates the volatility comovement of the stock market returns in using the DCC-MGARCH model. The empirical results depict that the volatility comovement among East Asian stock markets have increased in recent years. Moreover, this correlation is stronger in the developed markets of Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea. Volatility comovement across emerging countries, namely, China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines, has also increased. Poverty remains a pervasive problem all over the world, but the problem is worst in underdeveloped areas like Africa. While microfinance is supposed to address this problem through the promotion of viable businesses, it has not been very successful in helping survival microenterprises, i.e., businesses that the very poor with limited human capital have access to, in sectors with low barriers to entry and selling undifferentiated products. This study examines in detail the development aid architecture in Kenya’s agriculture sector. The focus is on the mechanisms in place within the Kenyan government (and ministry of agriculture in particular), mechanisms among and within donor agencies, and overall coordination mechanisms that bring together the donors and the government. Findings show that coordination and harmonization activities among donors are yet to yield the desired outcomes such as the division of labor protocol and joint programming. Does Privatization Improve Productivity? Empirical Evidence From Ethiopia, Tadesse Wodajo, Dawit Senbet

International Journal of African Development

Theoretically, it is posited that privatization enables the private sector to play a dominant role in the economy by enhancing competition, productivity and efficiency. When evaluated using these criteria, privatization of the manufacturing industries has failed in Ethiopia. Our empirical results show that, at best, privatization did not result in improving productivity, and at worst, it led to a decline in productivity. We argue that the main reason for this outcome is the unique economic and business environment prevailing in Ethiopia, which does not allow the standard economic assumptions of market competition to hold. The defining antinomy of the post-2008 crash phase is argued to be the one between neoliberalism and populism. This essay aims to complicate the terms of this antinomy and offers a reading that problematizes the association of neoliberalism with internationalism and globalization on the one hand and populism with nationalism and anti-imperialism on the other. Not only internationalism in its historical origins is an anti-imperialist concept but also today we can easily discern how reactionary forms of populist nationalisms are made possible by globalization of finance—a hallmark of neoliberalism. Mapping the spatial distribution of poverty in developing countries remains an important and costly challenge. These “poverty maps” are key inputs for poverty targeting, public goods provision, political accountability, and impact evaluation, that are all the more important given the geographic dispersion of the remaining bottom billion severely poor individuals. In this paper we train Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to estimate poverty directly from high and medium resolution satellite images. We use both Planet and Digital Globe imagery with spatial resolutions of 3-5 m2 and 50 cm2 respectively, covering all 2 million km2 of Mexico. Benchmark poverty estimates come from …

The Korean pop culture (TVdramas and K-pop music) has grown immensely popular across the globe over thepast two decades. This paper analyzes its impacts on international trade. We compilea cross-country panel dataset of South Korea's TV show exports to over 150countries for the period of 1998{2014. These variations in exposure to Koreanpop cultures are used to identify changes in consumer preferences for Koreanmerchandise across time, countries, and products (at the HS 4-digit level).First, we find that more Korean TV show exports significantly increase Koreanexports of goods for women, while the effects are much smaller on men'smerchandise. The effects of aid on economic development is topic typically studied from the perspective of corruption and allocative efficiency. We examine aid to less developed nations from a different viewpoint; assuming aid reaches the intended recipients, does it actually benefit them? We utilize Indonesia and the 2004 earthquake and tsunami as a natural experiment to observe the influx of aid, and compare the regions development before and after the disaster.
