This paper examines whether occupancy of seats affects stock returns of airline companies and how this relationship is affected by WTI oil prices. Our approach combines revenues (occupancy) and costs (oil prices) for 33 U.S. airline companies from 1990 to 2019. Using travel capacity utilization data from U.S. carriers at monthly frequency and exploiting fixed-effects regression models, we document a positive relation between occupancy and stock returns, which is attenuated by oil prices. The role of oil becomes larger with asymmetries: the effects of oil prices are higher when moving up than down. Airline stocks always respond by more than …

We investigate the effect of Japan’s Monetary Policy Meeting releases on the intraday dynamics of the Nikkei Stock Average Volatility Index and its futures during pleasant and unpleasant weather. We show that at the time of a monetary policy release when the temperature is pleasant, there is a significant decline in Japanese equities’ implied volatility and futures, which lasts for about 10 minutes and 5 minutes, respectively. This decline is longer and exhibits a greater variation when releases occur during cold days. Finally, we emphasize the achievable economic profits and losses, given the reaction of Nikkei VI futures to the …

We investigate the role of bubbles on financial contagion using a set of developed economies. First, using the recursive flexible window right-tailed ADF-based procedure, we date stamp bubble periods in stock index series. Second, we capture contagion with a DCC multivariate GARCH framework. In a third step, we construct a panel by pooling across the time-series dynamic conditional correlations and bubbles to estimate various dynamic panel specifications that consider the endogenous nature of bubbles. We find statistically significant decreases in the dynamic correlations during periods of bubbles, which shows that the financial contagion between pair of countries diminishes when any …

Credit Limit Of Unsecured Consumer Lending: Evidence From Micro Data, Suwinto Johan, Calista Endrina Dewi
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
As credit card debts have increased in Indonesia over the past ten years, concerns over the impulsive buying behavior of Indonesian credit card holders have emerged. Therefore, more attention must be paid to credit risk management of banks as it plays an important role in analyzing the possibility of losses due to the inability of prospective borrowers to repay debts. This study provides empirical evidence about the prudence of commercial banks in Greater Jakarta in offering credit card limits. Using primary micro-data collected from credit card applications submitted to the largest foreign private bank providing retail credit in the Greater …

Economics and Finance in Indonesia
Publications of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have mainly been conducted at a national level and separately for each goal. No prior research has been done on SDGs composite index at a provincial level in Indonesia. It is necessary to create a composite index that presents a single value at the provincial level to enable regional evaluation. The Indonesia Province SDGs composite index is developed from indicators based on Statistics Indonesia gathered from several publications. The data sources are the National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) and the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) which were linked surveys held in 2018. Principal Component Analysis and …

This research studies a network of interdealer trading in Over-The-Counter (OTC) Financial Markets. It reviews a model of OTC interdealer trading, extends this model for suitable application to empirical studies of trading in dealer networks within OTC markets, and ultimately develops a methodology for estimating the endogenous network parameters. Finally, it applies the methodology to conduct an empirical study of the Municipal bonds market.

We study the impact of shareholder-initiated litigation risk on a firm's stock price crash risk. Our empirical analysis takes advantage of the staggered adoption of universal demand laws, which led to an exogenous decline in derivative litigation risk. We find that a decline in the threat of derivative litigation reduces crash risk and that information hoarding associated with earnings management is a channel through which litigation risk affects crash risk. The relationship is also moderated by how exposed firms are to the other primary form of shareholder litigation, namely securities class-action lawsuits.

This paper examines how market frictions influence the managerial incentives and organizational structure of new hedge funds. We develop a stylized model in which new managers search for accredited investors and have stronger incentives to acquire managerial skill when encountering low investor demand. Fund families endogenously arise to mitigate frictions and weaken the performance incentives of affiliated new funds. Empirically, based on a TASS-HFR-BarclayHedge merged database, we find that ex ante identified cold inceptions facing low investor demand outperform existing hedge funds and hot inceptions facing high demand and that cold stand-alone inceptions outperform all types of family-affiliated inceptions.

Trust is an essential component of any financial system, and distrust can undermine savings and economic growth. Our study draws on the Singapore Life Panel to assess how trust ties to older respondents’ (1) pension plan participation and withdrawals; (2) life, health, and long-term care insurance holdings; and (3) stock market engagement. We show that the widely-used ‘trust in people’ question is uncorrelated with household behaviours related to retirement preparedness. Instead, trust in private and public financial representatives is positively associated with pension savings, investments, and insurance holdings. Financial literacy also plays an important and consistent role in retirement decision-making.

This paper examines the impact of financial reporting practices on corruption obstacles for about 150,000 firms across 143 mostly developing countries from 2006 to 2019. We document a strong positive relationship between the production of audited financial statements (AFS) and corruption obstacles (CO) faced by the firm. We argue that in a corrupt business environment, rent-seeking bureaucrats use the credible financial information to optimize their bribe demands. Our baseline results remain robust after addressing endogeneity concerns. We further show that country-level institutional quality has a moderating effect on the AFS-CO relation. The evidence from surveying entrepreneurs also …

Furthermore, filling a gap regarding how capital structures may be used to impact financial performance within’ football.

Equity Liquidity, Firm Investment And Financial Performance: An Assessment Of The Role Of Financial Development, Maria Karim, Abdul Rashid
Business Review
This paper examines the impact of equity liquidity (EQLQ) on firm performance (FPER) and firm investment (FINV) decisions. It also examines whether financial sector development (FSD) decreases the importance of EQLQ for firms' financial performance and investment policy. An unbalanced panel dataset for 360 non-financial Pakistani firms covering the period 2001-2018 is used. The results suggest that increased EQLQ has significant positive impact on firms' investment decisions and financial performance. However, we find that enhanced FSD significantly reduces the investment-favoring and performance enhancing role of EQLQ. The findings on the effects of EQLQ on both FINV and FPER are consistent …

Speculation And Returns' Volatility: Evidence From Pakistan Mercantile Exchange, Falik Shear
Business Review
The debate about the role of speculators in commodity markets has been intensified after the financialization. The current study augments the empirical evidence related to speculators and their impact on volatility of commodity markets. In doing so, the study uses daily data between 12th November 2009 to 30th April 2020 for oil and gold future contracts from Pakistan Mercantile Exchange. The findings suggest that speculative activity positively and significantly affects the returns' volatility. These findings support the destabilizing hypothesis, which argues that speculators create distortions in commodity markets. The findings have important implication for market participants (e.g., absence of welfare …

This study examines extreme tail behavior in Asian currency markets for the period of 2005-2018. Value-at-Risk (VaR) is estimated through Extreme Value Theory (EVT) approach to forecast losses incurred in a day in Asian currencies. Initially EVT approach is used to estimate extreme losses on the left tail of the distribution. Then, the VaR estimation of this approach is back tested through traditional and advance back testing methods to ascertain the accuracy of the models used. Results indicate that the estimation of GPD static model is relevant for extreme risk forecasting in EVT approach at both 95% and 99% confidence …

This study examines the role of quality minus junk factor in explaining cross-sectional differences in stock returns for the equity market of Pakistan. A new factor quality minus junk has been added to the existing Fama & French three factor model (1993) as a fourth factor to check whether it is priced as a risk factor. The study also compares the explanatory power of the newly proposed model with the existing single-factor Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Fama & French three factor model (1993). A high quality data set of 70 non-financial firms listed on the PSX is employed …
