Chapter 1: (A Quantitative Analysis of Interest on Reserves and Reserve Requirements) - I construct a medium scale DSGE model with financial frictions both on the demand (entrepreneurs) and supply (banks) sides of credit to study the costs and benefits of fixed/time-varying minimum reserve requirements and interest paid by the Fed on reserves. The results can be summarized as follows: (1) An optimal time-varying minimum reserve requirement generates substantial welfare gain when compared with a fixed minimum reserve requirement when no interest is paid on reserves. (2) Paying interest on reserves is substantially welfare inferior to a policy with no interest …

Cross-Border Technology Investments In Recession, Juliana Yu Sun, Huanhuan Zheng

Utilizing industry-level foreign direct investment (FDI) from 72 source markets to 122 destination markets between 2003 to 2018, we evaluate how cross-border technology investments respond to economic recessions. We find that FDI embedded with intensive research and development (R&D) drops when the destination market is in a recession and the source market is in a normal state and recovers to the pre-recession levels when both destination and source markets are in recession. However, there is little evidence that recessions affect cross-border investments in other aspects of technology measured by the penetration of robots, intellectual property products and information and communications …

Do illegal insiders internalize legal risk? We address this question with hand-collected data from 530 SEC (the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) investigations. Using two plausibly exogenous shocks to expected penalties, we show that insiders trade less aggressively and earlier and concentrate on tips of greater value when facing a higher risk. The results match the predictions of a model where an insider internalizes the impact of trades on prices and the likelihood of prosecution and anticipates penalties in proportion to trade profits. Our findings lend support to the effectiveness of U.S. regulations' deterrence and the long-standing hypothesis that insider …

Loan-type reverse mortgage plans and sell-type home reversion plans for retirement financing are two well-known equity release plans that entitle homeowners not only to release cash from their properties but also to allow them to age in place. Recently, a new hybrid equity release plan was proposed to incorporate the home reversion plan’s features with an option of staying in the property for a fixed period without being subject to survival. This additional option provides flexibility to homeowners to better meet their retirement financial and personal needs by reducing the financial uncertainty of home reversion products. In this article, we …

Regional Commercial Bank Lending To Small Businesses In The Wake Of The Great Recession, Boris D. Higgins
Hunt Institute Working Paper Series
The purpose of this paper is to document and explain the state by state variation in commercial bank lending to small businesses during the Great Recession. To accomplish this purpose will require several steps. These steps include showing the evidence of the variation in lending across states, the theoretical causes and the empirical findings of a capital supply gap based on market imperfections and employing OLS estimation method on carefully selected economic variables. The empirical results indicate that economic conditions, borrower characteristics and lender characteristics influence lending variation where these results can help in policy formulation.

Concentrated Liquidity In Uniswap V3: A New Strategy To Optimize The Capital Bear Market, Francesco Spinoglio
Journal of New Finance
This article aims to offer a new vision on concentrated liquidity in Uniswap V3 and how we can effectively optimize liquidity thanks to the new tools provided by the DeFi ecosystem. Since the concept of concentrated liquidity first appeared in 2021 with Uniswap V3, new tools have been emerging to improve the security of smart contracts and offer better incentives to liquidity providers. This paper aims to propose a liquidity strategy concentrated in DeFi in order to draw additional liquidity in times of quantitative tightening and high interest rates, while trying to optimize the choice of the range to mitigate …

How Can Smes Effectively Leverage Blockchain? A Roadmap And Five-Step Approach, Naeem Bajwa, Thomas Tudor, Joe T. Felan, Otmar E. Varela Dr.
Pennsylvania Economic Review
This paper presents blockchain technology and its applications, demonstrating how small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can easily engage in blockchain initiatives. We start with an introduction to blockchain technology and its business applications. For many small enterprises, engaging in blockchain transactions remains relatively novel. Nevertheless, emerging trends indicate that large enterprises are incorporating smaller business partners, broadening the application scope across the supply chain. We demonstrate how this technology is revolutionizing both supply chain and contract management. We examine how Smart Contracts can streamline complexity and enhance business transaction transparency, facilitating more efficient and effective operations. SMEs can secure strategic …

Country Culture And Bitcoin Early Adoption, Wei Du, Z. Tingting Jia, Lei Zhu
Pennsylvania Economic Review
This paper investigates the relationship between national culture and the early adoption of Bitcoin. Utilizing a dataset comprised of Google Trends data on Bitcoin search interest for 64 countries, we construct measures of early Bitcoin adoption and examine their correlation with Hofstede's cultural dimension scores. Our findings reveal that in developed countries, lower Masculinity and Long-Term Orientation are associated with earlier Bitcoin adoption. In contrast, developing countries with lower Indulgence are found to adopt Bitcoin early. This paper contributes to the literature by highlighting how different cultural traits, moderated by a country's development status, can influence the Bitcoin early adoption.

Using Korean firms that are cross-listed in the US market, this paper investigates whether there are standalone effects of geographic and market proximity of institutional investors on monitoring performance. We find that Korean institutional ownership is negatively associated with earnings management while the US institutional ownership has no impact on earnings management. This suggests that there is the geographic proximity advantage over the market proximity advantage in the emerging markets. Furthermore, we also show that the impact of geographic proximity is stronger for firms with high informational opacity

The role of public libraries is changing in response to a multitude of influences and trends. The exponential growth of technology as the primary method of information access, funding challenges, changing demographics, and other mitigating factors have forced public libraries to become more than book repositories. Community library leaders and governing board members are faced with challenges such as decreased funding, community division regarding library services, and soaring costs for library materials and services, as they develop and adopt policies and practices to navigate this ever-changing environment.
The purpose of this qualitative study was to collect data from the public …

Money Doesn’T Grow On Trees: How Financial Literacy Is Learned And Developed Within American Childhood, Nate Lewis
Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research
Financial literacy refers to the ability to process and utilize economic information to make informed decisions for their wellbeing. Given concerning indicators of financial outcomes within the United States, it is crucial to understand how and when strong financial behavior is developed. Efforts to enhance financial education have explored incorporating financial concepts into children’s literature and games. Yet, research indicates that financial literacy is far more rooted in the habits learned from one’s family, despite the emphasis often placed on schooling and socioeconomic status. It is therefore evident that efforts to promote financial literacy must always involve empowering family members …
