Sovereignty, Accountability, And The Wealth Fund Governance Conundrum, Anna Gelpern 2010 Georgetown University Law Center

Sovereignty, Accountability, And The Wealth Fund Governance Conundrum, Anna Gelpern

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Sovereign wealth funds – state-controlled transnational portfolio investment vehicles – began as an externally imposed category in search of a definition. SWFs from different countries had little in common and no particular desire to collaborate. But SWFs as a group implicated the triple challenge of securing cooperation between deficit and surplus states, designing a legal framework for global capital flows, and integrating state actors in the transnational marketplace. This Article describes how an apparently artificial grouping of investors, made salient by the historical and political circumstances of their host states in the mid-2000s, became a vehicle for addressing some of …

Sustainable Budgeting, Brian K. Strow, Claudia W. Strow 2010 Western Kentucky University

Sustainable Budgeting, Brian K. Strow, Claudia W. Strow

Economics Faculty Publications

At the forefront of current discussion and social conscience is the importance of ecological sustainability. An also important but often overlooked issue is the importance of sustainable budgeting practices for our various levels of government. Governments often provide social services such as food, clothing, shelter, education, public safety, or health care. If the money to pay for the social services comes from additional government debt, social services to future citizens become imperiled. In this paper, the authors set forth a theoretical framework for sustainable government decision making with special emphasis on sustainable governmental budgeting. The authors outline the intricacies of …

Investor Knowledge And Investment Barriers., Steven Doman 2010 Universiti Malaya

Investor Knowledge And Investment Barriers., Steven Doman

Student Works (2010-2019)

The world of investing in the various products related to the stock and bond markets is confusing for many people. This is a problem since financial investments often represent a large portion of an individual’s personal assets. As regulators begin to search for answers about what caused the economic crisis of 2008-2009 and try to pass regulations that will prevent it from happening again, investors will continue to look to the products of investment firms to help accomplish their financial goals. Unfortunately for investors, many will continue to choose investments based on very limited personal knowledge. Investment firms will in …

Off The Cliff And Back? Credit Conditions And International Trade During The Global Financial Crisis, Davin CHOR, Kalina MANOVA 2010 Singapore Management University

Off The Cliff And Back? Credit Conditions And International Trade During The Global Financial Crisis, Davin Chor, Kalina Manova

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study the collapse of international trade flows during the global financial crisis using detailed data on monthly US imports. We show that credit conditions were an important channel through which the crisis affected trade volumes, by exploiting the variation in the cost of capital across countries and over time, as well as the variation in financial vulnerability across sectors. Countries with higher interbank rates and thus tighter credit markets exported less to the US during the peak of the crisis. This effect was especially pronounced in sectors that require extensive external financing, have limited access to trade credit, or …

Modified Information Criteria For Selecting A Finite Mixture Model, Safa K. Kadhem, Hajem A. Daham 2010 College of Administration and Economics, Al Muthanna University, Iraq

Modified Information Criteria For Selecting A Finite Mixture Model, Safa K. Kadhem, Hajem A. Daham

Muthanna Journal of Administrative and Economics Sciences

Recently, a paper published by Celeux et al. (2006) presented several forms for the deviation information criterion (DIC) for mixture models, each version is depended on the kind of probability function. However, no reliable version was adopted for those models. As an idea inspired by Brooks (2002, p. 617), we develop, in this paper, Bayesian deviations plugging into two known criteria: the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) for choosing best mix model. Due to unavailability the closed-form of the perceived likelihood of those models, we propose an algorithm for estimating the observed likelihood for mixture models …

A Clashing Viewpoint Concerning India: A Critique Of Goldman Sachs 2007 Report, Ashok K. Roy, Aniruddha Bagchi

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

The centerpiece of the 2007 Report by Goldman Sachs is the prediction of India's phenomenal economic growth and power in the next few decades. In this article we critique the conceptual validity of that prognosis. In particular, we highlight several hard and soft infrastructure impediments to India's emergence as a major economic power.

Africa's Debt Crisis: Perspectives On Nigeria's Escape From External Debt Trap, Solomon O. Akinboye 2010 University of Lagos, Nigeria

Africa's Debt Crisis: Perspectives On Nigeria's Escape From External Debt Trap, Solomon O. Akinboye

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

In sharp contrast with the image of an "oil-rich" country, Nigeria is paradoxically a heavily indebted poor country. While the country's oil production reached 2.5 million barrels per day in 2004, its total external debt stock at the end of 2004 was estimated at $35.9 billion. The debt crisis has been aggravated by the burden of debt servicing, which has absorbed the nation's budgetary and foreign exchange resources with deleterious impact on the critical sectors of the economy. The paper critically examines Nigeria's external debt profile and efforts toward its alleviation. It argues that the debt burden constitutes a major …

A Comparison Of Costs And Returns For Organic And Conventional Cabernet Sauvignon Grape Production In San Luis Obispo County, Amanda N. Johansen 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

A Comparison Of Costs And Returns For Organic And Conventional Cabernet Sauvignon Grape Production In San Luis Obispo County, Amanda N. Johansen

Agribusiness

This study examined the differences in costs and profitability for established conventional and organic Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Edna Valley region of San Luis Obispo County, California. The study used a partial budgeting approach to compare cost and profitability for established vineyards for 2009, and thus ignored transition costs. Data were obtained from UC Davis cost studies for organic and conventional grape production in other regions of California in previous years. Adjustments made to these costs to account for changes in input use, input costs and grape prices in San Luis Obispo County during the 2009 growing season.

The …

The Global Credit Crisis Of 2007–2009: An Examination Of Some Of The Causes, Chronology, And Unconventional Monetary Tools Employed, Mark P. Culver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper will first examine some of the causes over many years and conditions that evolved that preceded the 2007-2009 credit crisis as well as some of the events that took place in the midst of the crisis. More importantly, this paper will examine how central banks applied the generally prescribed first line defense in the form of conventional monetary policy to its full extent without complete or adequate satisfaction or result. The bulk of the paper is directed at a description and analysis of the unconventional monetary tools, that which has come to be called quantitative easing, that central …

What Explains The Gender Gap In Financial Literacy? The Role Of Household Decision-Making, Raquel Fonseca, Kathleen J. Mullen, Gema Zamarro, Julie Zissimopoulos 2010 RAND Corporation, Santa Monica

What Explains The Gender Gap In Financial Literacy? The Role Of Household Decision-Making, Raquel Fonseca, Kathleen J. Mullen, Gema Zamarro, Julie Zissimopoulos

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Research has shown that financial illiteracy is widespread among women, and that many women are unfamiliar with even the most basic economic concepts needed to make saving and investment decisions. This gender gap in financial literacy may contribute to the differential levels of retirement preparedness between women and men. However, little is known about the determinants of the gender gap in financial literacy. Using data from the RAND American Life Panel, we examined potential explanations for the gender gap including the role of marriage and division of financial decision-making among couples. We found that differences in the demographic characteristics of …

Financial Illiteracy: Prevalence, Consequences, And Solutions, Gerald Matasy 2010 Portland State University

Financial Illiteracy: Prevalence, Consequences, And Solutions, Gerald Matasy

Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses

As Americans have become increasingly responsible for their own financial security their ability to make financial decisions in their best interests has certainly grown in importance. The focus of this paper is to determine what role financial literacy plays in making optimal financial decisions and maintaining economic stability. Using mostly research from other studies and some original research, this paper seeks to examine the level of financial literacy among the general population and what the implications are for the general lack of literacy. What I find is that individuals who have lower levels of financial literacy generally make poorer financial …

Naira Convertibility: The Journey So Far, Moses K. Tule 2010 Central Bank of Nigeria

Naira Convertibility: The Journey So Far, Moses K. Tule

Bullion

This paper examines the path to Naira Convertibility, the Journey so far. lt avers that convertibility is pursued by countries either as an economic management approach or as a tool for achieving higher reckoning on the global economic stage. Consequently, the examples of Argentina, Chile, Peru, Brazil, etc could fall in the first category while the Russian Rubble push could qualify for the second group. Nigeria's efforts at Naira convertibility would fall. The paper suggested that Nigeria should initiate a more realistic Naira convertibility programme through trade guarantees where it insists that imports from Nigeria from member ECOWAS members would …
