Nature Of Vix Jumps On Market Timing Of Hedge Funds, Yueh-Neng LIN, Choo Yong, Jeremy GOH 2012 Singapore Management University

Nature Of Vix Jumps On Market Timing Of Hedge Funds, Yueh-Neng Lin, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The study indicates that Brownian motion, finite and infinite activity jumps are present in the ultra-high frequency VIX data. The total quadratic variation can be split into a continuous component of 29% and a jump component of 71%. Jump activities on ultra-high frequency VIX data are found informative in ex-ante identifying subgroups of hedge funds that deliver significant outperformance. In the months that follow large jumps, strategies exposing to long volatility and extreme risk tend to deliver positive performance in extreme market environments. In the months that follow small jumps, possibly as a result of trading illiquidity, most fund strategies …

Imperfect Detection Of Tax Evasion In A Corrupt Tax Administration, Diego Escobari 2012 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Imperfect Detection Of Tax Evasion In A Corrupt Tax Administration, Diego Escobari

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This article models the imperfect detection of tax evasion motivated by the existence of a corrupt tax administration. Consistent with previous literature, fines and audit probabilities both have a positive effect on compliance. Moreover, the model shows that they have a negative effect on the bribes paid to corrupt tax officials. More corruption decreases compliance levels, giving honest auditors incentives to work harder to detect evasion. Giving inspectors a share of the detected evasion (tax farming) makes auditors work harder; however, increasing their wages reduces their exerted effort to discover evasion. Higher compliance can as well be achieved by hiring …

Revisiting Regulatory Regime For The Financial Industry, Ishrat Husain Dr. 2012 Institute of Business Administration, Karachi, Pakistan

Revisiting Regulatory Regime For The Financial Industry, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Book Chapters and Conference Papers

Why change the Regulatory Regime?

US and European Financial Systems were badly affected by the recent Global financial crisis and trillions of public tax dollars had to be poured into the system to avert a complete collapse.

The banks in Europe particularly in Spain, Greece, Ireland and Portugal are still not out of woods despite generous support from the European Central Bank in the recent months.

Financial systems in Canada, Australia and New Zealand were least affected despite their close integration into the global system.

Emerging and Developing Economies (EDEs) particularly China, India, Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan survived the onslaught …

The Budget Arithmetic, Ishrat Husain Dr. 2012 Institute of Business Administration, Karachi, Pakistan

The Budget Arithmetic, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Pakistan's economic growth in the last four years has been quite disappointing both in relation to the preceding four years and compared to other South Asian countries. Austerity measures to contain fiscal deficit, achieve macroeconomic stability and reduce external borrowing have squeezed the space for public sector development programme. The uncertainty and lack of direction, political instability, energy shortages, security concerns and high interest rates have played to the fear of private sector which has withheld productive investment. Consequently, total investment-GDP ratio which had reached 23 percent has declined to 13 percent. Assuming that investment ratio and the incremental capital-output …

Financial Solvency Of The American Government., Jamie Thomas 2012 East Tennessee State University

Financial Solvency Of The American Government., Jamie Thomas

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The main topic of this paper is the financial solvency, or “the ability to pay all debts,” of the United States government (“solvency,” n.d.). The questions posed and analyzed are 1) is the American government solvent, 2) did Standard and Poor’s accurately downgrade the American debt, and 3) how does the national debt affect the solvency of the American government. To determine the solvency and effects of debt, analysis of financial information for America and nine other countries, grouped according to their credit rating is used. Solvency is determined by credit rating for this analysis; a country with a high …

Is Analyst Over Optimism Creating Price Inefficiency In The Stock Market?, Juan Mauricio Guiliani 2012 Utah State University

Is Analyst Over Optimism Creating Price Inefficiency In The Stock Market?, Juan Mauricio Guiliani

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This study aims to uncover the relationship between market frictions, measured by price delay, and consensus analyst recommendations on stocks. Analyst recommendations are publicly available to investors, and under the framework of the Efficient Market Hypothesis, should contribute to the efficiency of a stock’s pricing mechanism by providing information to the market that would otherwise not be available. We find evidence that the more favorable recommended stocks in our sample command a higher price delay than less favorably recommended stocks. In other words, the most optimistically recommended stocks are priced less efficiently than other less favorably recommended stocks. We also …

Predicting Mergers And Acquisitions, John D'Angelo 2012 University of Central Florida

Predicting Mergers And Acquisitions, John D'Angelo

HIM 1990-2015

Being able to predict a merger or acquisition before it takes place could lead to an investor earning a premium, if they owned shares of the targeted firm before the merger or acquisition attempt is announced. On average acquiring firms pay a premium when acquiring or merging with a targeted firm. This study uses publicly available financial information for 7,267 attempted takeover targets and 52,343 non-targeted firms for the period January 3, 2000 through December 31, 2007 to estimate (using logit) predictive models. Financial ratios are constructed based on six hypotheses found in the literature. Although statistical evidence supports a …

Leveraged Etfs And Intraday Volatility, Adam Welker 2012 Utah State University

Leveraged Etfs And Intraday Volatility, Adam Welker

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This study provides an empirical analysis to determine whether leveraged exchange-traded funds are contributing to excess intraday volatility. The study, which is centered aroudn the introduction dates of six leveraged ETFs, uses high-frequency TAQ data for the S&P 500 constituent stocks to compare volatility before and after the introduction dates. Realized volatility is calculated for the morning, afternoon, and entire trading day during the twenty trading days before, and twenty trading days after each date of interest. There has been a lot of debate recently about whether leveraged ETFs could be increasing swings in intraday volatility. Up until now, this …

State Based Determinants Of Inward Fdi Flow In The Us Economy, Lucyna Kornecki, E. M. Ekanayake

Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Information Sciences - Daytona Beach

Inward foreign direct investment (FDI) represents an integral part of the US economy. The flow of international capital has been a key factor expanding economy. The inward US FDI constitutes important factor contributing to output growth in the US economy. This paper investigates factors affecting the inward FDI flow among fifty states of the United States. The analysis uses annual data for the period from 1997 to 2007. The study identifies several state-specific determinants of FDI and investigates the changes in their importance during the study period. Our results show that among the major determinants, the real per capita income, …

Opaqueness Of Financial Institutions, Todd G. Griffith 2012 Utah State University

Opaqueness Of Financial Institutions, Todd G. Griffith

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Spectators and professionals have targeted financial institutions as being at the epicenter of recent markets crises The opaqueness of bank holding companies' assets has been assumed to have created additional volatility and inefficiency within the market. It appears that the capital structure of a bank is the actual driving force behind the inefficiency. I conduct multiple empirical analyses to measure whether the lack to financial institutions asset transparency negatively impacts the ability of the firms price to respond to informational innovations in a timely manner. Through additional econometric tests, I explore several economic theories to narrow in on the root …

Cultural Values Impact On Risk Perceptions A Comparison Of Cultural Indexes And Risk Premium, Anna Constantino 2012 University of Central Florida

Cultural Values Impact On Risk Perceptions A Comparison Of Cultural Indexes And Risk Premium, Anna Constantino

HIM 1990-2015

This paper examines how cultural values influence risk premium across the world. Cultural values are measured by four cultural indexes, power distance, uncertainty avoidance index, masculinity index, and individualism index, established by Geert Hofstede. Our methodology determines the risk premium by using the Dividend Discount Model, and then computes the regression analysis of each index's impact on average risk premiums. After analyzing 31 countries, results show the only statistically significant correlation found was between the individualism index and risk premium. The higher the individualistic nature of the culture was the higher the risk premium. This is attributed to the overconfidence …

Tracking Error Of Leveraged And Inverse Etfs, John Romano 2012 University of Central Florida

Tracking Error Of Leveraged And Inverse Etfs, John Romano

HIM 1990-2015

Tracking ability of leveraged and inverse exchange traded funds can be very important to investors looking for a dependable return. If the investor wants to put their money on a certain index they feel strongly about, they expect their investment vehicle to track that return appropriately. Over the years, we have seen tremendous growth in the exchange traded fund industry. In 2006, leveraged and inverse funds were introduced to the market, allowing investors to take leveraged and directional trades on indices. These investment vehicles can be traded as easily as any stock, and therefore need some attention. Since any novice …

Can One Size Fit All? An Application Of Management Theory On The European Sovereign Debt Crisis, Amanda Grayson 2012 Pace University

Can One Size Fit All? An Application Of Management Theory On The European Sovereign Debt Crisis, Amanda Grayson

Honors College Theses

The European Union is a combination of twenty-seven different and unique cultures under one common government. Can culture help explain the continued problems emanating from the European debt crisis?

In undergraduate management courses around the world, from Harvard University to Beijing International, eager young minds are taught the same fundamental management theories. Among others, one of the most popular would inevitably be Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions.

Geert Hofstede, while working for the IBM research department, undertook a detailed survey and analysis of the various cultures of the world. He defined four dimensions of culture, now expanded to six, that can be …

Demand Shifting Across Flights And Airports In A Spatial Competition Model, Diego Escobari, Sang-Yeob Lee 2012 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Demand Shifting Across Flights And Airports In A Spatial Competition Model, Diego Escobari, Sang-Yeob Lee

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the nature of day-to-day competition between flights using a unique panel data set on prices and inventories. We use instrumental variables methods and several spatial autoregressive models (SAR) to estimate price reaction functions. The primary source of product differentiation is departure time. After controlling for flight-specific characteristics and various sources of price dispersion, we find important evidence of demand shifting between competing flights. Most of the shift is being captured by flights scheduled to depart within a 3-hour window. We find no evidence of demand shifting between airports.

Essays On International Trade And Finance, Amat Adarov 2012 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Essays On International Trade And Finance, Amat Adarov

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation consists of three papers exploring the macroeconomic implications of heterogeneity of countries in financial development, economic interconnectedness via trade and financial linkages.

Chapter 1 examines whether countries which are more centrally located in the global trade network have more synchronized stock markets. Global trade data is used to construct a novel measure of random walk betweenness centrality (RWBC), measuring the extent to which a country lies on random pathways in-between other countries and is therefore likely to be a conduit in the transmission of a shock across global markets. Based on a panel dataset of 58 countries over …

Too Big Not To Fail: United States Corporate Media And The 2008 Financial Crisis, Justin Lars Bergh 2012 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Too Big Not To Fail: United States Corporate Media And The 2008 Financial Crisis, Justin Lars Bergh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates United States newspaper coverage of the 2008 financial crisis, with a particular focus on the debate that took place in press coverage surrounding the proposed 700 billion dollar Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). Specifically, this study aims to understand how, when faced with a crisis that threatened hegemony, the state and economic elites, working in and through media, were able to effectively convince the subordinate classes to consent to state intervention aimed at perpetuating a financial system that has historically profited from the relative financial insecurity of the subordinate classes. In order to understand media's role in …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: The Value Of Political Connections In Social Networks, Quoc-Anh DO, Yen Teik LEE, Bang Dang NGUYEN, Kieu-Trang NGUYEN 2012 Singapore Management University

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: The Value Of Political Connections In Social Networks, Quoc-Anh Do, Yen Teik Lee, Bang Dang Nguyen, Kieu-Trang Nguyen

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper investigates the impact of social-network based political connections on firm value. We focus on the networks of university classmates and alumni among directors of U.S. public firms and congressmen. Comparing firms connected to elected versus defeated politicians in the Regression Discontinuity Design of close elections from 2000 to 2008, we provide evidence that political connections enhance firm value. However, the value of political connections varies in a more complex way than expected. While connections to powerful members of the Senate generate strong positive impact on firm value, connections to newly elected congressmen are less valuable to firms than …

Global Savings And Global Investment: The Transmission Of Identified Fiscal Shocks, James Feyrer, Jay Shambaugh 2012 Dartmouth College

Global Savings And Global Investment: The Transmission Of Identified Fiscal Shocks, James Feyrer, Jay Shambaugh

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper examines the effect of exogenous shocks to savings on world capital markets. Exogenous tax increases in the United States (from Romer and Romer 2010) are only partially offset by changes in domestic private savings, and only a small amount is absorbed by increased domestic investment (contra Feldstein and Horioka 1980). Almost half the change in taxes is transmitted abroad through a change in the US current account. Other countries experience decreases in current accounts and increases in investment in response to exogenous US tax increases. We cannot reject symmetric responses across countries with different currency regimes and levels …
