We present measurements of the charge balance function, from the charged particles, for diverse pseudorapidity and transverse momentum ranges in Au + Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV using the STAR detector at RHIC. We observe that the balance function is boost-invariant within the pseudorapidity coverage [ − 1.3 , 1.3 ] . The balance function properly scaled by the width of the observed pseudorapidity window does not depend on the position or size of the pseudorapidity window. This scaling property also holds for particles in different transverse momentum ranges. In addition, we find that the width …

Tunneling Spectroscopy Study Of Calcium Ruthenate, Anthony Bautista 2010 University of Kentucky

Tunneling Spectroscopy Study Of Calcium Ruthenate, Anthony Bautista

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The ruthenates are perhaps one of the most diverse group of materials known up to date. These compounds exhibit a wide array of behaviors ranging from the exotic pwave superconductivity in Sr2RuO4, to the itinerant ferromagnetism in SrRuO3, and the Mott-insulating behavior in Ca2RuO4. One of the most intriguing compounds belonging to this group is Ca3Ru2O7 which is known to undergo an antiferromagnetic ordering at 56K and an insulating transition at 48K. Most intriguing, however, is the behavior displayed by this compound in the presence …

Near-Field Radiative Transfer: Thermal Radiation, Thermophotovoltaic Power Generation And Optical Characterization, Mathieu Francoeur 2010 University of Kentucky

Near-Field Radiative Transfer: Thermal Radiation, Thermophotovoltaic Power Generation And Optical Characterization, Mathieu Francoeur

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on near-field radiative transfer, which can be defined as the discipline concerned with energy transfer via electromagnetic waves at sub-wavelength distances. Three specific subjects related to this discipline are investigated, namely nearfield thermal radiation, nanoscale-gap thermophotovoltaic (nano-TPV) power generation and optical characterization. An algorithm for the solution of near-field thermal radiation problems in one-dimensional layered media is developed, and several tests are performed showing the accuracy, consistency and versatility of the procedure. The possibility of tuning near-field radiative heat transfer via thin films supporting surface phononpolaritons (SPhPs) in the infrared is afterwards investigated via the computation of …

Internal Magnetic Structure Of Magnetite Nanoparticles At Low Temperature, Kathryn L. Krycka, Julie A. Borchers, R.A. Booth, C.R. Hogg, Yumi Ijiri, W.C. Chen, S.M. Watson, M. Laver, T.R. Gentile, S. Harris

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Small-angle neutron scattering with polarization analysis reveals that Fe3O4 nanoparticles with 90 Å diameters have ferrimagnetic moments significantly reduced from that of bulk Fe3O4 at 10 K, nominal saturation. Combined with previous results for an equivalent applied field at 200 K, a core-disordered shell picture of a spatially reduced ferrimagnetic core emerges, even well below the bulk blocking temperature. Zero-field cooling suggests that this magnetic morphology may be intrinsic to the nanoparticle, rather than field induced, at 10 K.

Influence Of The Nitrogen Concentration On The Electrical Characteristic Of Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon Nitride (A-Sin_X:H) Based Schottky Diodes, İLKER AY, HÜSEYİN TOLUNAY 2010 TÜBİTAK

Influence Of The Nitrogen Concentration On The Electrical Characteristic Of Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon Nitride (A-Sin_X:H) Based Schottky Diodes, İlker Ay, Hüseyi̇n Tolunay

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this study, the Schottky diode characteristic of hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiN_x:H) samples containing various amounts of nitrogen have been investigated via both I-V and C-V measurements. From forward bias I-V measurements in the dark, the barrier height of samples (\phi_{B0}), ideality factor (\eta ), modified Richardson constant (A^\ast) and series resistances (R_s) have been obtained as the function of temperature for different nitrogen content. In addition, forward and reverse bias current ratios (I_f/I_r) at V~=~1 volt have been investigated as the function of temperature for different nitrogen content. Light sensitivity of the samples has also been investigated under …

Photocurrent And Surface Recombination Mechanisms In The In_Xga_{1-X}N\Slashgan Different-Sized Quantum Dot Solar Cells, Hossein Movla, Foozieh Sohrabi, Jafar Fathi, Hassan Babaei, Arash Nikniazi, Khadije Khalili, Nima Es'haghi Gorji

Turkish Journal of Physics

We present a p-i-n structured solar cell with stacked layers of In_xGa_{1-x}N Quantum Dots (QDs) with different indium composition. The photocurrent and surface recombination processes are investigated in the i-region. We have shown that the QDs in the i-region can play the role of both generation or recombination centers. The photocurrent has been calculated by self-consistent method to solve continuity equation of charge carriers in the layers of the i-region. By changing the Indium composition in In_xGa_{1-x}N QDs, the band gap of QDs varies and therefore provides a considerable overlapping with solar spectrum. Proposed SC with different-sized QDs and different …

Structure And Optical Properties Of Cuals_2 Thin Films Prepared Via Chemical Bath Deposition, Tariq Alwan, Mushtak Jabbar

Turkish Journal of Physics

CuAlS_2 thin films of thicknesses 118 \pm 5 nm were deposited on glass substrates using chemical bath deposition technique. The details of the preparation method are well described. The method is relatively simple and is easily controlled and sufficient to produce large area and good adherence to the substrate films. Effect of annealing temperature T_a on the structure, and optical properties of CuAlS_2 films were investigated. The structures of the films were studied by X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectrophotometer. The optical properties of the films were ascertained by UV-VIS spectrophotometer (wavelengths ranging between 300 and 900 nm). The optical transmittance …

Quantum 1/F Noise In Infrared Detectors And Scanning Tunneling Microscopes, Amanda Marie Truong 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Quantum 1/F Noise In Infrared Detectors And Scanning Tunneling Microscopes, Amanda Marie Truong

Doctoral Dissertations

"Noise is, by definition, any random and persistent disturbance, which interferes with the clarity of a signal. Modern electronic devices are designed to limit noise, and in most cases the classical forms of noise have been eliminated or greatly reduced through careful design. However, there is a fundamental, quite unavoidable type of noise, called quantum 1/f noise, which occurs at low frequencies and is a fundamental consequence of the discrete nature of the charge carriers themselves. This quantum 1/f noise is present in any physical cross section or process rate, such as carrier mobility, diffusion rates and scattering processes. Although …

Weak Shear Study Of Galaxy Clusters By Simulated Gravitational Lensing, David Coss 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Weak Shear Study Of Galaxy Clusters By Simulated Gravitational Lensing, David Coss

Doctoral Dissertations

"Gravitational lensing has been simulated for numerical galaxy clusters in order to characterize the effects of substructure and shape variations of dark matter halos on the weak lensing properties of clusters. In order to analyze realistic galaxy clusters, 6 high-resolution Adaptive Refinement Tree N-body simulations of clusters with hydrodynamics are used, in addition to a simulation of one group undergoing a merger. For each cluster, the three-dimensional particle distribution is projected perpendicular to three orthogonal lines of sight, providing 21 projected mass density maps. The clusters have representative concentration and mass values for clusters in the concordance cosmology. Two gravitational …

A Time-Symmetric Formulation Of Quantum Mechanics, Yakir Aharonov, Sandu Popescu, Jeff Tollaksen 2010 Chapman University

A Time-Symmetric Formulation Of Quantum Mechanics, Yakir Aharonov, Sandu Popescu, Jeff Tollaksen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Quantum mechanics allows one to independently select both the initial and final states of a single system. Such pre- and postselection reveals novel effects that challenge our ideas about what time is and how it flows.

A Study Of The Growth And Structure Of Chromium And Iron Oxide Films On Pd(001) Using X-Ray Photoelectron Diffraction And Low Energy Electron Diffraction, Tina Dhekial-Phukan 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

A Study Of The Growth And Structure Of Chromium And Iron Oxide Films On Pd(001) Using X-Ray Photoelectron Diffraction And Low Energy Electron Diffraction, Tina Dhekial-Phukan

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this study, attempts were made to grow well-ordered chromium- and iron-oxide films on a Pd(001) surface, and two sample preparation techniques, the multilayer and the sequential growth techniques, were used to grow these transition metal oxide films. The study is a part of a larger project that aims to look into the interaction between metal substrates and the overlayers grown on them. Previous studies of oxide films on Ag(001) resulted in the growth of 4-fold and 3-fold symmetry oxide structures from the multilayer and sequential growth techniques respectively. The present investigation's goal was to study how the growth of …

Three-Body Dynamics In Single Ionization Of Atomic Hydrogen By 75 Kev Proton Impact, Aaron C. LaForge 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Three-Body Dynamics In Single Ionization Of Atomic Hydrogen By 75 Kev Proton Impact, Aaron C. Laforge

Doctoral Dissertations

"Doubly differential cross sections (DDCS) for single ionization of atomic hydrogen by 75 keV proton impact have been measured as a function of the projectile scattering angle and energy loss. This pure three-body collision system represents a fundamental test case for the study of the reaction dynamics in few-body systems. A comparison between theory and experiment reveals that three-body dynamics is important at all scattering angles, and that an accurate description of the role of the projectile-target nucleus interaction as well as the second order projectile-electron interaction remains a major challenge to theory. However, progress is being made in understanding …

Theoretical Study Of Electron Impact-Ionization Of Molecules, Ola Al-Hagan 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Theoretical Study Of Electron Impact-Ionization Of Molecules, Ola Al-Hagan

Doctoral Dissertations

"There has been impressive progress in the area of theoretical treatments of electron impact ionization (e,2e) of atoms and molecules in the last decade. Most recently, low to intermediate incident electron energies have been reported for molecular systems. In this dissertation, different theoretical models will be used to calculate the fully differential cross section (FDCS) for (e,2e) processes for low to intermediate incident electron energies for a variety of final state electron angles and energies for the diatomic molecules H₂ and N₂, the triatomic molecule H₂O, and the biomolecule HCOOH.

In addition, there has been a large amount of interest …

Upper Limits On A Possible Gluon Mass, Shmuel Nussinov, Robert Shrock 2010 Chapman University

Upper Limits On A Possible Gluon Mass, Shmuel Nussinov, Robert Shrock

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We analyze upper limits on a possible gluon mass, mg. We first discuss various ways to modify quantum chromodynamics to include m(g) not equal 0, including a bare mass, a Higgs mechanism, and dynamical breaking of color SU(3)(c). From an examination of experimental data, we infer an upper limit m(g) < O(1) MeV. As part of our analysis, we show that a claim, hitherto unrefuted in the literature, of a much stronger upper limit on m(g), is invalid. We discuss subtleties in interpreting gluon mass limits in view of the fact that at scales below Lambda(QCD), quantum chromodynamics is strongly coupled, perturbation theory is not reliable, and the physics is not accurately described in terms of the Lagrangian degrees of freedom, including gluons. We also point out a fundamental difference in the behavior of quantum chromodynamics with a nonzero gluon mass and a weakly coupled gauge theory with a gauge boson mass.

Entropy And Information Causality In General Probabilistic Theories, Howard Barnum, Jonathan Barrett, Lisa Orloff Clark, Matthew S. Leifer, Robert Spekkens, Nicholas Stepanik, Alex Wilce, Robin Wilke

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We investigate the concept of entropy in probabilistic theories more general than quantum mechanics, with particular reference to the notion of information causality (IC) recently proposed by Pawlowski et al (2009 arXiv:0905.2292). We consider two entropic quantities, which we term measurement and mixing entropy. In the context of classical and quantum theory, these coincide, being given by the Shannon and von Neumann entropies, respectively; in general, however, they are very different. In particular, while measurement entropy is easily seen to be concave, mixing entropy need not be. In fact, as we show, mixing entropy is not concave whenever the state …
