The Electron–Phonon Coupling At The Mo(112) Surface, Ning Wu, Keisuke Fukutani, Peter A. Dowben 2010 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The Electron–Phonon Coupling At The Mo(112) Surface, Ning Wu, Keisuke Fukutani, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We investigated the electron–phonon coupling (EPC), in the vicinity of the Fermi level, for the surface-weighted states of Mo(112) from high resolution angle-resolved photoemission data taken parallel to the surface corrugation (i.e. (111)). The surface-weighted bandwidth may be discussed in terms of electron–electron interactions, electron impurity scattering and electron–phonon coupling and exhibits a mass enhancement factor λ = 0.42, within the Debye model, determined from the experimentally derived self-energy. Gold overlayers suppress the mass enhancement of the Mo(112) surface-weighted band crossing the Fermi level at 0.54 Å-1.

A Review Of Polytypism In Lead Iodide, Peter A. Beckmann 2010 Bryn Mawr College

A Review Of Polytypism In Lead Iodide, Peter A. Beckmann

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Lead Iodide (PbI2) is an important inorganic solid for both basic scientific research and possible technological applications and in this brief review we discuss the structure of PbI2. Although the basic structure is a simple I-Pb-I layered structure with a [PbI6]4- near-octahedron being the basic building block, there are many ways of stacking the layers which results in many polytypes. We present 20 of the 23 entries for the structure of PbI2 from the Inorganic Structural Database and order them by polytype. This represents more than 80 years of crystallographic research in the structure of this compound. We present a …

Axel Enders Publications

The growth dynamics of submonolayer coverages of cobalt during buffer-layer assisted growth on Ag(111) and Pt(111) substrates is investigated by variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy in the temperature range between 80 and 150 K. It is found that attractive cluster-substrate interactions can govern the cluster formation on the Xe buffer layer if the Xe layer is sufficiently thin. The interpretation of the microscopy results is supported by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism data which monitor the effect of cluster-substrate interactions on the formation of magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy of Co nanocluster during the different stages of growth. Ab initio calculations …

Magnetic Surface Nanostructures, Axel Enders, Ralph A. Skomski, Jan Honolka

Axel Enders Publications

Recent trends in the emerging field of surface-supported magnetic nanostructures are reviewed. Current strategies for nanostructure synthesis are summarized, followed by a predominantly theoretical description of magnetic phenomena in surface magnetic structures and a review of experimental research in this field. Emphasis is on Fe- or Co-based nanostructures in various low-dimensional geometries, which are studied as model systems to explore the effects of dimensionality, atomic coordination, chemical bonds, alloying and, most importantly, interactions with the supporting substrate on the magnetism. This review also includes a discussion of closely related systems, such as 3d element impurities integrated into organic networks, surface-supported …

Optical Properties Of Quasi-Tetragonal Bifeo3 Thin Films, P. Chen, N. J. Podraza, X. S. Xu, A. Melville, E. Vlahos, V. Gopalan, R. Ramesh, D. G. Schlom, J. L. Musfeldt

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

Optical transmission spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry were used to extract the optical properties of an epitaxially grown quasi-tetragonal BiFeO3 thin film in the near infrared to near ultraviolet range. The absorption spectrum is overall blue shifted compared with that of rhombohedral BiFeO3, with an absorption onset near 2.25 eV, a direct 3.1 eV band gap, and charge transfer excitations that are ~0.4 eV higher than those of the rhombohedral counterpart. We interpret these results in terms of structural strain and local symmetry breaking.

Gregory Snow Publications

Bose-Einstein correlations have been measured using samples of proton-proton collisions at 0.9 and 2.36 TeV center-of-mass energies, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is observed in the form of an enhancement of pairs of same-sign charged particles with small relative four-momentum. The size of the correlated particle emission region is seen to increase significantly with the particle multiplicity of the event.

Oscillatory And Monotonic Modes Of Long-Wave Marangoni Convection In A Thin Film, Sergey Shklyaev, Mikhail Khenner, Alexei Alabuzhev 2010 Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics

Oscillatory And Monotonic Modes Of Long-Wave Marangoni Convection In A Thin Film, Sergey Shklyaev, Mikhail Khenner, Alexei Alabuzhev

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We study long-wave Marangoni convection in a layer heated from below. Using the scaling k=O Bi, where k is the wave number and Bi is the Biot number, we derive a set of amplitude equations. Analysis of this set shows presence of monotonic and oscillatory modes of instability. Oscillatory mode has not been previously found for such direction of heating. Studies of weakly nonlinear dynamics demonstrate that stable steady and oscillatory patterns can be found near the stability threshold.

The Effects Of Surface Modification On Spacecraft Charging Parameters, Amberly Evans, John R. Dennison 2010 Utah State University

The Effects Of Surface Modification On Spacecraft Charging Parameters, Amberly Evans, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

Charging of materials by incident radiation is affected by both environmental and physical conditions. Modifying a material’s physical surface will change its reflection, transmission and absorption of the incident radiation which are integrally related to the accumulation of charge and energy deposition in the material. An optical analysis of the effect of surface modification on spacecraft charging parameters on prototypical Kapton HN and Cu samples is presented. Samples were roughened with abrasive compounds ranging from 0.5 to 10 μm in size, comparable to the range of incident wavelengths. They were also contaminated with thin layers of DC 704 diffusion pump …

To What Type Of Logic Does The "Tetralemma" Belong?, Rafael D. Sorkin

Physics - All Scholarship

Although the so called "tetralemma" might seem to be incompatible with any recognized scheme of logical inference, its four alternatives arise naturally within the "anhomomorphic" logics proposed recently in order to accommodate certain features of microscopic (i.e. quantum) physics. This suggests that non-classical logics of a similar type might have been known in ancient India.

On The Accuracy Of Explicit Finite-Volume Schemes For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Aleksandar Donev, Eric Vanden-Eijnden, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell 2010 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

On The Accuracy Of Explicit Finite-Volume Schemes For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Aleksandar Donev, Eric Vanden-Eijnden, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell

Faculty Publications

This paper describes the development and analysis of finite-volume methods for the Landau–Lifshitz Navier–Stokes (LLNS) equations and related stochastic partial differential equations in fluid dynamics. The LLNS equations incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by the addition of white noise fluxes whose magnitudes are set by a fluctuation-dissipation relation. Originally derived for equilibrium fluctuations, the LLNS equations have also been shown to be accurate for nonequilibrium systems. Previous studies of numerical methods for the LLNS equations focused primarily on measuring variances and correlations computed at equilibrium and for selected nonequilibrium flows. In this paper, we introduce a more systematic approach …

Growth, Modification And Integration Of Carbon Nanotubes Into Molecular Electronics, Jason P. Moscatello 2010 Michigan Technological University

Growth, Modification And Integration Of Carbon Nanotubes Into Molecular Electronics, Jason P. Moscatello

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Molecules are the smallest possible elements for electronic devices, with active elements for such devices typically a few Angstroms in footprint area. Owing to the possibility of producing ultrahigh density devices, tremendous effort has been invested in producing electronic junctions by using various types of molecules. The major issues for molecular electronics include (1) developing an effective scheme to connect molecules with the present micro- and nano-technology, (2) increasing the lifetime and stabilities of the devices, and (3) increasing their performance in comparison to the state-of-the-art devices.

In this work, we attempt to use carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the interconnecting …

Measurement Of Thermoelectric Properties Of Amorphous Silicon Based Thin Films, Rubina Sultan 2010 University of Denver

Measurement Of Thermoelectric Properties Of Amorphous Silicon Based Thin Films, Rubina Sultan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is important to understand thermal transport behavior in materials for technological and fundamental physics applications. Many efforts have been made in the past for explaining thermal conduction in solids. It has been observed that thermal transport properties may change with reducing size of the sample, especially as sample size approaches the nanoscale regime. The deviation in these properties, mainly in thermal conductivity, may change the choice of the material for different applications such as thermoelectricity. Thermoelectric materials are a possible source of sustainable energy and can play an important role in the fight against the present energy crisis. Recently, …

A series of experiments are conducted in vivo using Yucatan mini-pigs (Sus scrofa domestica) to determine thermal damage thresholds to the skin from 1940-nm continuous-wave thulium fiber laser irradiation. Experiments employ exposure durations from 10 ms to 10 s and beam diameters of approximately 4.8 to 18 mm. Thermal imagery data provide a time-dependent surface temperature response from the laser. A damage endpoint of minimally visible effect is employed to determine threshold for damage at 1 and 24 h postexposure. Predicted thermal response and damage thresholds are compared with a numerical model of optical-thermal interaction. Results are compared …

Comparison Of Flight And Ground Tests Of Environmental Degradation Of Misse-6 Suspecs Materials, Jr Dennison, John Prebola, Amberly Evans, Danielle Fullmer, Joshua L. Hodges, Dustin H. Crider, Daniel S. Crews

Conference Proceedings

The effects of prolonged exposure to the LEO space environment and charge-enhanced contamination on optical, thermal, and electron emission and transport properties of common spacecraft materials have been investigated by comparing pre- and post-flight characterization measurements. The State of Utah Space Environment and Contamination Study (SUSpECS) deployed in March 2008 on board the Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE-6) payload, was exposed for ~18 months on the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS), and was retrieved in September 2009. A total of 165 samples were mounted on three separate SUSpECS panels on the ram and wake sides on the …

Web-Based Student Data Collection And Assessment, Thomas J. Bensky 2010 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Web-Based Student Data Collection And Assessment, Thomas J. Bensky

Physics

Gathering information from students for learning assessment is a critical need of any teacher. In this paper, the tech-savvy instructor is introduced to basic techniques of creating custom, web-based, student-data collection software. Despite widespread deployment of generalized course management systems, the author argues that small, ultra-customized data collection methodologies, can be of great help in collecting and assessing student input, reducing demands on paper, and easing the familiar grading bottleneck while satisfying an individual's pedagogical needs.

What Is Wrong With Water Barometers?, Dan Sullivan, Robert W. Smith, E. J. Kemnitz, Kevin Barton, Robert M. Graham, Raymond A. Guenther, Larry Webber

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Every student who studies atmospheric pressure in physics or chemistry learns the principles behind the construction of barometers. Cistern barometers, such as those found in most laboratories, consist of a long glass tube containing an inverted column of liquid having an open end in a cistern of the liquid. Students learn that the column of liquid is supported by air pressure and is equal in weight to a column of air of the same diameter.

Fast-Response Liquid Crystal Displays, Meizi Jiao 2010 University of Central Florida

Fast-Response Liquid Crystal Displays, Meizi Jiao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

After about five decades of extensive material research and device development, followed by massive investment in manufacturing technology, thin-film-transistor liquid-crystaldisplay (TFT-LCD) has finally become the dominant flat panel display technology. Nowadays, LCD performances, such as viewing angle, contrast ratio, and resolution, have reached acceptable levels. The remaining major technical challenges are response time, light efficiency, and sunlight readability. Fast response time is desired to reduce motion blur and to enable field sequential color displays using red (R), green (G), and blue (B) LEDs (light emitting diodes) without noticeable color breakup. Sequential RGB colors would eliminate the commonly used spatial color …

Does Chiasmus Appear In The Book Of Mormon By Chance?, Boyd F. Edwards, W. F. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

Chiasmus is an inverted-parallel literary form that was employed by ancient Hebrew biblical writers, among others. An instance of this form, called a “chiasm,” presents two or more literary elements, and then restates them in reverse order. Short chiasms are not uncommon in literature. In some cases, the authors undoubtedly intended to use that form for literary effect (that is, by design); in other cases, the elements fell into that form without author intent (that is, by chance). In 1969, John W. Welch reported his discovery of many-element chiasms in the Book of Mormon,1 which Joseph Smith testified to …
