Anomalously Large Chiral Sensitivity In The Dissociative Electron Attachment Of 10-Iodocamphor, J. M. Dreiling, F. W. Lewis, J. D. Mills, Timothy J. Gay 2016 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Anomalously Large Chiral Sensitivity In The Dissociative Electron Attachment Of 10-Iodocamphor, J. M. Dreiling, F. W. Lewis, J. D. Mills, Timothy J. Gay

Timothy J. Gay Publications

We have studied dissociative electron attachment (DEA) between low energy (≤ 0.6 eV) longitudinally polarized electrons and gas-phase chiral targets of 3-bromocamphor (C10H15BrO), 3-iodocamphor (C10H15IO), and 10-iodocamphor. The DEA rate depends on the sign of the incident electron helicity for a given target handedness, and it varies with both the atomic number (Z) and location of the heaviest atom in the molecule. While simple dynamic mechanisms can account for the asymmetry dependence on Z, they fail to explain the large asymmetry variation with the heavy atom location.

Domain Wall Conductivity In Semiconducting Hexagonal Ferroelectric Tbmno3 Thin Films, D. J. Kim, J. G. Connell, S. S. A. Seo, Alexei Gruverman 2016 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Domain Wall Conductivity In Semiconducting Hexagonal Ferroelectric Tbmno3 Thin Films, D. J. Kim, J. G. Connell, S. S. A. Seo, Alexei Gruverman

Alexei Gruverman Publications

Although enhanced conductivity of ferroelectric domain boundaries has been found in BiFeO3 and Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 films as well as hexagonal rare-earth manganite single crystals, the mechanism of the domain wall conductivity is still under debate. Using conductive atomic force microscopy, we observe enhanced conductance at the electrically-neutral domain walls in semiconducting hexagonal ferroelectric TbMnO3 thin films where the structure and polarization direction are strongly constrained along the c-axis. This result indicates that domain wall conductivity in ferroelectric rare-earth manganites is not limited to charged domain walls. We show that the observed conductivity in the TbMnO3 films is …

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

We report the fabrication of a set of new rare-earth-free magnetic compounds, which form the Fe3Co3Ti2-type hexagonal structure with P-6m2 symmetry. Neutron powder diffraction shows a significant Fe/Co anti-site mixing in the Fe3Co3Ti2 structure, which has a strong effect on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy as revealed by first-principle calculations. Increasing substitution of Fe atoms for Co in the Fe3Co3Ti2 lattice leads to the formation of Fe4Co2Ti2 , Fe5CoTi, and Fe6Ti2 with significantly improved …

Understanding And Design Of An Arduino-Based Pid Controller, Dinesh Bista 2016 Virginia Commonwealth University

Understanding And Design Of An Arduino-Based Pid Controller, Dinesh Bista

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents research and design of a Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) controller that uses a microcontroller (Arduino) platform. The research part discusses the structure of a PID algorithm with some motivating work already performed with the Arduino-based PID controller from various fields. An inexpensive Arduino-based PID controller designed in the laboratory to control the temperature, consists of hardware parts: Arduino UNO, thermoelectric cooler, and electronic components while the software portion includes C/C++ programming. The PID parameters for a particular controller are found manually. The role of different PID parameters is discussed with the subsequent comparison between different modes …

Computation Of A Virtual Tide Corrector To Support Vertical Adjustment Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Multibeam Sonar Data, Lawrence H. Haselmaier 2015 University of New Orleans

Computation Of A Virtual Tide Corrector To Support Vertical Adjustment Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Multibeam Sonar Data, Lawrence H. Haselmaier

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

One challenge for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) multibeam surveying is the limited ability to assess internal vertical agreement rapidly and reliably. Applying an external ellipsoid reference to AUV multibeam data would allow for field comparisons. A method is established to merge ellipsoid height (EH) data collected by a surface vessel in close proximity to the AUV. The method is demonstrated over multiple collection missions in two separate areas. Virtual tide corrector values are derived using EH data collected by a boat and a measured ellipsoid to chart datum separation distance. Those values are compared to measurements by a traditional tide …

Dark Matter Halo Concentration And The Evolution Of Spiral Structure In N-Body, Barred Spiral Galaxies, Jazmin Esmeralda Berlanga Medina 2015 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Dark Matter Halo Concentration And The Evolution Of Spiral Structure In N-Body, Barred Spiral Galaxies, Jazmin Esmeralda Berlanga Medina

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Motivated by the evidence of relationships between pitch angle (the tightness of spiral arm structure in the disk), P, and various indicators of central mass concentration, as well as the theoretical relationship between halo mass concentration and the density of visible matter in the central part of the galaxy, we look at a possible relationship between P and cvir (the virial concentration of the dark matter halo) in N-body simulations of barred, spiral galaxies. We also look at the evolution of pitch angle over time in higher temporal resolution than any data currently available in the literature. We find that …

Exact Implicit Solution Of Nonlinear Heat Transfer In Rectangular Straight Fin Using Symmetry Reduction Methods, M. S. Abdel Latif, A. H. Abdel Kader, H. M. Nour

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, the exact implicit solution of the second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation which governing heat transfer in rectangular fin is obtained using symmetry reduction methods. General relationship among the temperature at the fin tip, the temperature gradient at the fin base, the mode of heat transfer, 𝑛 and the fin parameters 𝑁 and ℰ is obtained. Some numerical examples are discussed and it is shown that the temperature of fin increases when approaching from the heat source. The relationship between the fin efficiency and the temperature of fin tip is obtained for any value of the mode …

Boundary-Layer Flow Of Nanofluids Over A Moving Surface In The Presence Of Thermal Radiation, Viscous Dissipation And Chemical Reaction, Eshetu Haile, B. Shankar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The flow problem presented in the paper is boundary-layer flow of nanofluids over a moving surface in the presence of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and chemical reaction. The plate is assumed to move in the same or opposite direction to the free stream which depends on the sign of the velocity parameter. The partial differential equations appearing in the governing equations are transformed into a couple of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations. The transformed equations in turn are solved numerically by the shooting method along with the fourth order Runge-Kutta integration technique. Influences of the pertinent parameters in …

A New Analytic Numeric Method Solution For Fractional Modified Epidemiological Model For Computer Viruses, Ali H. Handam, Asad A. Freihat

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Computer viruses are an extremely important aspect of computer security, and understanding their spread and extent is an important component of any defensive strategy. Epidemiological models have been proposed to deal with this issue, and we present one such here. We consider the modified epidemiological model for computer viruses (SAIR) proposed by J. R. C. Piqueira and V. O. Araujo. This model includes an antidotal population compartment (A) representing nodes of the network equipped with fully effective anti-virus programs. The multi-step generalized differential transform method (MSGDTM) is employed to compute an approximation to the solution of the model of fractional …

Tungsten Disulphide Based All Fiber Q-Switching Cylindrical-Vector Beam Generation, J. Lin, K. Yan, Yong Zhou, L. X. Xu, C. Gu, Qiwen Zhan 2015 University of Science and Technology of China

Tungsten Disulphide Based All Fiber Q-Switching Cylindrical-Vector Beam Generation, J. Lin, K. Yan, Yong Zhou, L. X. Xu, C. Gu, Qiwen Zhan

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

We proposed and demonstrated an all fiber passively Q-switching laser to generate cylindrical-vectorbeam, a two dimensional material, tungsten disulphide (WS2), was adopted as a saturable absorber inside the laser cavity, while a few-mode fiber Bragg grating was used as a transverse mode-selective output coupler. The repetition rate of the Q-switching output pulses can be varied from 80 kHz to 120 kHz with a shortest duration of 958 ns. Attributed to the high damage threshold and polarization insensitivity of the WS2 based saturable absorber, the radially polarized beam and azimuthally polarized beam can be easily generated in the Q-switchingfiber laser.

Creation Of Identical Multiple Focal Spots With Prescribed Axial Distribution, Yanzhong Yu, Qiwen Zhan 2015 University of Dayton

Creation Of Identical Multiple Focal Spots With Prescribed Axial Distribution, Yanzhong Yu, Qiwen Zhan

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

We present a scheme for the construction of coaxially equidistant multiple focal spots with identical intensity profiles for each individual focus and a predetermined number and spacing. To achieve this, the radiation field from an antenna is reversed and then gathered by high numerical aperture objective lenses. Radiation patterns from three types of line sources, i.e., the electric current, magnetic current and electromagnetic current distributions, with cosine-squared taper are respectively employed to generate predominately longitudinally polarized bright spots, azimuthally polarized doughnuts, and focal spots with a perfect spherically symmetric intensity distribution. The required illuminations at the pupil plane of a …

Reconfigurable Large-Area Magnetic Vortex Circulation Patterns, Robert Streubel, Florian Kronast, Ulrich K. Rößler, Oliver G. Schmidt, Denys Makarov

Robert Streubel Papers

Magnetic vortices in nanodots own a switchable circulation sense. These nontrivial magnetization configurations can be arranged into extended and interacting patterns. We have experimentally created large arrays of magnetically reconfigurable vortex patterns in nonplanar honeycomb lattices using particle lithography. Optimizing height asymmetry of the vertices and applying an in-plane magnetic field provide means to switch between homocircular and staggered vortex patterns with a potentially high impact on magnonics and spintronics relying on chiral noncollinear spin textures. To this end, exchange coupling of extended vortex lattices with an out-of-plane magnetized layer allows one to realize artificial skyrmionic core textures with controllable …

Magnetization Dynamics Of Imprinted Non-Collinear Spin Textures, Robert Streubel, Peter Fischer, Martin Kopte, Oliver G. Schmidt, Denys Makarov 2015 Leibniz-Institut für Festkörper- und Werkstoffforschung Dresden

Magnetization Dynamics Of Imprinted Non-Collinear Spin Textures, Robert Streubel, Peter Fischer, Martin Kopte, Oliver G. Schmidt, Denys Makarov

Robert Streubel Papers

We study the magnetization dynamics of non-collinear spin textures realized via imprint of the magnetic vortex state in soft permalloy into magnetically hard out-of-plane magnetized Co/Pd nanopatterned heterostructures. Tuning the interlayer exchange coupling between soft- and hard-magnetic subsystems provides means to tailor the magnetic state in the Co/Pd stack from being vortex- to donut-like with different core sizes. While the imprinted vortex spin texture leads to the dynamics similar to the one observed for vortices in permalloy disks, the donut-like state causes the appearance of two gyrofrequencies characteristic of the early and later stages of the magnetization dynamics. The dynamics …

Tailoring Optical Complex Field With Spiral Blade Plasmonic Vortex Lens, Guanghao Rui, Qiwen Zhan, Yiping Cui

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

Optical complex fields have attracted increasing interests because of the novel effects and phenomena arising from the spatially inhomogeneous state of polarizations and optical singularities of the light beam. In this work, we propose a spiral blade plasmonic vortex lens (SBPVL) that offers unique opportunities to manipulate these novel fields. The strong interaction between the SBPVL and the optical complex fields enable the synthesis of highly tunable plasmonic vortex. Through theoretical derivations and numerical simulations we demonstrated that the characteristics of the plasmonic vortex are determined by the angular momentum (AM) of the light, and the geometrical topological charge of …

Analyzing Major Challenges Of Wind And Solar Variability In Power Systems, Falko Ueckerdt, Robert Brecha, Gunnar Luderer 2015 Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research

Analyzing Major Challenges Of Wind And Solar Variability In Power Systems, Falko Ueckerdt, Robert Brecha, Gunnar Luderer

Physics Faculty Publications

Ambitious policy targets together with current and projected high growth rates indicate that future power systems will likely show substantially increased generation from renewable energy sources. A large share will come from the variable renewable energy (VRE) sources wind and solar photovoltaics (PV); however, integrating wind and solar causes challenges for existing power systems. In this paper we analyze three major integration challenges related to the structural matching of demand with the supply of wind and solar power: low capacity credit, reduced utilization of dispatchable plants, and over-produced generation. Based on residual load duration curves we define corresponding challenge variables …
