Statistical Reanalysis Of Jewish Priests’ And Non-Priests’ Haplotypes Using Exact Methods, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky
Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations of Education Faculty Publications
Researchers in an article appearing in Nature used asymptotic (i.e., large sample) chi-square tests in analyzing haplotypes of Y chromosomes using the polymerase chain reaction applied to genomic DNA from male Israeli, North American, and British Jews. The use of classical methods for analyzing extremely sparse contingency tables is frequently done, but with the advent of statistical software capable of conducting exact tests, researchers should certainly cease relying on outdated methods for small sample analyses. A reanalysis was conducted using modern statistical methods. Results and implications for using exact tests are discussed.

Symmetric Factorization Of The Conformation Tensor In Viscoelastic Fluid Models, Nusret Balci, Becca Thomases, Michael Renardy, Charles R. Doering
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
The positive-definite symmetric polymer conformation tensor possesses a unique symmetric square root that satisfies a closed evolution equation in the Oldroyd-B and FENE-P models of viscoelastic fluid flow. When expressed in terms of the velocity field and the symmetric square root of the conformation tensor, these models' equations of motion formally constitute an evolution in a Hilbert space with a total energy functional that defines a norm. Moreover, this formulation is easily implemented in direct numerical simulations resulting in significant practical advantages in terms of both accuracy and stability.

Constraint Qualifications And Optimality Conditions For Nonconvex Semi-Infinite And Infinite Programs, Boris S. Mordukhovich, T T. A. Nghia
Mathematics Research Reports
The paper concerns the study of new classes of nonlinear and nonconvex optimization problems of the so-called infinite programming that are generally defined on infinite-dimensional spaces of decision variables and contain infinitely many of equality and inequality constraints with arbitrary (may not be compact) index sets. These problems reduce to semi-infinite programs in the case of finite-dimensional spaces of decision variables. We extend the classical Mangasarian-Fromovitz and Farkas-Minkowski constraint qualifications to such infinite and semi-infinite programs. The new qualification conditions are used for efficient computing the appropriate normal cones to sets of feasible solutions for these programs by employing advanced …

Shooting Neural Networks Algorithm For Solving Boundary Value Problems In Odes, Kais I. Ibraheem, Bashir M. Khalaf
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The objective of this paper is to use Neural Networks for solving boundary value problems (BVPs) in Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). The Neural networks use the principle of Back propagation. Five examples are considered to show effectiveness of using the shooting techniques and neural network for solving the BVPs in ODEs. The convergence properties of the technique, which depend on the convergence of the integration technique and accuracy of the interpolation technique are considered.

Exact Travelling Wave Solutions Of The Coupled Klein-Gordon Equation By The Infinite Series Method, Nasir Taghizadeh, Mohammad Mirzazadeh, Foroozan Farahrooz
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we employ the infinite series method for travelling wave solutions of the coupled Klein-Gordon equations. Based on the idea of the infinite series method, a simple and efficient method is proposed for obtaining exact solutions of nonlinear evolution equations. The solutions obtained include solitons and periodic solutions.

A Group-Permutation Algorithm To Solve The Generalized Sudoku, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Sudoku can be generalized to squares whose dimensions are n^2 × n^2 , where n ≥ 2, using various symbols (numbers, letters, mathematical symbols, etc.), written just one time on each row and on each column; and the large square is divided into n 2 small squares with the side n × n and each will contain all n 2 symbols written only once. In this paper we present an elementary solution for the generalized sudoku based on a group-permutation algorithm.

This study investigated stability and change in self-reported sexual orientation identity over time in youth. We describe gender- and age-related changes in sexual orientation identity from early adolescence through emerging adulthood in 13,840 youth ages 12–25 employing mobility measure M, a measure we modified from its original application for econometrics. Using prospective data from a large, ongoing cohort of U.S. adolescents, we examined mobility in sexual orientation identity in youth with up to four waves of data. Ten percent of males and 20% of females at some point described themselves as a sexual minority, while 2% of both males and …

Developing effective management strategies is essential to conservation biology. Population models and sensitivity analyses on model parameters have provided a means to quantitatively compare different management strategies, allowing managers to objectively assess the resulting impacts. Inference from traditional sensitivity analyses (i.e., eigenvalue sensitivity methods) is only valid for a population at its stable age distribution, while more recent methods have relaxed this assumption and instead focused on transient population dynamics. However, very few case studies, especially in long-lived vertebrates where transient dynamics are potentially most relevant, have applied these transient sensitivity methods and compared them to eigenvalue sensitivity methods. We …

Interactions And Focusing Of Nonlinear Water Waves, Harihar Khanal, S.C. Mancas, Shahrdad Sajjadi

A theoretical and computational study is undertaken for the modulational instabilities of a pair of nonlinearly interacting two-dimensional waves in deep water. It has been shown that the full dynamics of these interacting waves gives rise to localized large-amplitude wavepackets (wave focusing). The coupled cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) equations are used to derive a nonlinear dispersion equation which give rise to new class of modulational instabilities and demonstrates the dependence of obliqueness of the interacting waves. The computations, due to nonlinear wave-wave interactions, waves that are separately modulationally stable can give rise to the formation of large-amplitude coherent wave packets …

Providing a warranty as a part of a product's sale is a common practice in industry. Parameters of such warranties (e.g., its duration limits, intensity of use) must be carefully specified to ensure their financial viability. A great deal of effort has been accordingly devoted in attempts to reduce the costs of warranties via appropriately designed strategies to service them. many such strategies, that aim to reduce the total expected costs of the warrantor or / and are appealing in other ways such as being more pragmatic to implement - have been suggested in the literature. Design, analysis and optimization …

Using Feed-Forward Networks To Infer The Activity Of Feedback Neuronal Networks, Xinxian Huang

The nervous system is one of the most important organ systems in a multicellular body. Animals, including human beings perceive, learn, think and deliver motion instructions through their nervous system. The basic structural units of the nervous system are individual neurons which constitute different neuronal networks with distinct functions. In each network, constituent neurons are coupled with different connection patterns, for example, some neurons send feed-forward information to the coupling neurons while others are mutually coupled. Because it is often difficult to analyze large interconnected feedback neuronal networks, it is important to derive techniques to reduce the complexity of the …
