Before releasing databases which contain sensitive information about individuals, statistical agencies have to apply Statistical Disclosure Limitation (SDL) methods to such data. The goal of these methods is to minimize the risk of disclosure of the confidential information and at the same time provide legitimate data users with accurate information about the population of interest. SDL methods applicable to the microdata (i. e. collection of individual records) are often called masking methods. In this paper, several multiplicative noise masking schemes are presented. In this paper we establish a result regarding the connection between continuous maximal regularity and generation of analytic semigroups on a pair of densely embedded Banach spaces. More precisely, we show that continuous maximal regularity for a closed operator A : E1 → E0 implies that A generates a strongly continuous analytic semigroup on E0 with domain equal E1.

The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effectiveness of variable resistance as provided through elastic plus free weight techniques in college aged males and females. Twenty novice lifters were randomly assigned to a traditional free weight only (6 males and 5 females) or elastic band plus free weight group (5 males and 5 females) and 9 more normally active controls (5 males and 4 females), were recruited to maintain normal activity for the duration of the study. Pólya’s Theorem says that if a homogeneous polynomial is positive on the standard -simplex , then for sufficiently large all the coefficients of are positive. We give a complete characterization of forms, possibly with zeros on , for which there exists so that all coefficients of have only nonnegative coefficients, along with a bound on the needed.

We derive the eigenvalues of a tridiagonal matrix with a special structure. A conjecture about the eigenvalues was presented in a previous paper, and here we prove the conjecture. The matrix structure that we consider has applications in biogeography theory.

Various neuron types exhibit sub-threshold and firing frequency resonance in which the sub-threshold membrane potential or firing frequency responses to periodic inputs peak at a preferred frequency (or frequencies). Previous experimental work has shown that medial entorhinal cortex layer II stellate cells (SCs) exhibit sub-threshold and firing frequency resonance in the theta frequency band (4 - 10 Hz). In this thesis we seek to understand the biophysical and dynamic mechanism underlying these phenomena and how they are related. Energy Propagation In Jammed Granular Matter, Xiaoni Fang

The systems built from dense granular materials are very important due to their relevance to a number of technological and other fields. However, they are difficult to study in particular due to a lack of accurate continuum description. In this work, studies on these systems are presented using discrete element simulations that model the granular particles as soft, elastic, and frictional disks which interact when in contact. These simulations are used for the purpose of analyzing a few granular systems with the main emphasis on understanding phenomena of energy and force propagation.
