From Designing To Implementing Mathematical Tasks: Investigating The Changes In The Nature Of The T-Shirt Task, Claire Vaugelade Berg
The Mathematics Enthusiast
From looking at research literature it is possible to see that research on design, implementation and analysis of mathematical tasks is an actual theme: there is a special issue of the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education (2007) with Anne Watson, John Mason and Orit Zaslavsky as editors (Watson and Mason, 2007), a book published by Clarke, Grevholm and Millman (2009) concerning “Tasks in primary mathematics teacher education” and under ICME 11 in Mexico (2008) the title of one of the Topic Study Groups was “Research and development in task design and analysis”. In addition several substantial research projects conducted in …

Values In Effective Mathematics Lessons In Sweden: What Do They Tell Us?, Aihui Peng, Mikaela Nyroos
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This study aims to examine values in effective mathematics lessons in Sweden from the perspectives of students in different groups and their teachers. By using methods with lesson observations, student focus group interviews and teacher interviews, it shows that instructional explanation and classroom atmosphere with quietness are shared-values of students and their teachers. The findings propose some crucial issues which related to how mathematics teaching could be adjusted to different students’ learning conditions and whether it needs more instructional explanation in mathematics teaching in Sweden.

Evaluating Mersenne Primes Using A Single Quadrant Expanding Square, Cory P. Daignault, Douglas Sprague, Joe L. Mott
The Mathematics Enthusiast
By forming a table of sequential odd numbers using a single quadrant expanding square pattern it was observed that multiple Mersenne primes fall into the first column. We prove that the Mersenne primes which fall into the first column will be of the form p = 3 mod 4, where p is the Mersenne prime exponent. Focusing the search of primes to those which fall into the first column of this square may be a means to increase the speed at which large primes are discovered.

Response Surface Optimization Of Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication Depositions Using Design Of Experiments, Patricia A. Quigley
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication (EBF3 ) System is a material depositing, layer additive technique that produces three dimensional (3D) parts out of a wide range of metals in high vacuum, using an electron beam and wire feedstock. Screening deposition trials on a titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, at the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) revealed selective vaporization of the aluminum content of linear prototypes when subjected to chemical analysis. In this study, the aluminum content, bead height and bead width output responses were analyzed from a systematic study of the effects that the interactions of the EBF3 processing parameters …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In our previous study, we developed the Stokes-Darcy (SD) model was developed for flow in a karst aquifer with a conduit bedded in matrix, and the Beavers-Joseph (BJ) condition was used to describe the matrix-conduit interface. We also studied the mathematical well-posedness of a coupled continuum pipe flow (CCPF) model as well as convergence rates of its finite element approximation. in this study, to compare the SD model with the CCPF model, we used numerical analyses to validate finite element discretisation methods for the two models. using computational experiments, simulation codes implementing the finite element discretisations are then verified. Fixed Point Theorems For Convex-Power Condensing Operators Relative To The Weak Topology And Applications To Volterra Integral Equations, Ravi P. Agarwal, Donal O'Regan, Mohamed-Aziz Taoudi
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper we present new fixed point theorems for weakly sequentially continuous mappings which are convex-power condensing relative to a measure of weak noncompactness. Our fixed point results extend and improve several earlier works. As an application, we investigate the existence of weak solutions to a Volterra integral equation. 2012 Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium.

We prove equivalences between the Gromov-Witten theories of toric blowups of P^1xP^1xP^1 and P^3. In particular, we prove that the all genus, virtual dimension zero Gromov-Witten theory of the blowup of P^3 at points precisely coincides with that of the blowup at points of P^1xP^1xP^1, for non-exceptional classes. It follows that the all-genus stationary Gromov-Witten theory of P^1xP^1xP^1 coincides with that of P^3 in low degree. We also prove there exists a toric symmetry of the Gromov-Witten theory of P^1xP^1xP^1 analogous to and intimately related to Cremona symmetry of P^3. Enumerative applications are given.

Spread Option Pricing With Stochastic Interest Rate, Yi Luo
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we investigate the spread option pricing problem with stochastic interest rate. First, we will review the basic concept and theories of stochastic calculus, give an introduction of spread options and provide some examples of spread options in different markets. We will also review the market efficiency theory, arbitrage and assumptions that are commonly used in mathematical finance. In Chapter 3, we will review existing spread pricing models and term-structure models such as Vasicek Mode, and the Heath-Jarrow-Morton framework. In Chapter 4, we will use the martingale approach to derive a partial differential equation for the price of …

Persistence And Foliation Theory And Their Application To Geometric Singular Perturbation, Ji Li
Theses and Dissertations
Persistence problem of compact invariant manifold under random perturbation is considered in this dissertation. Under uniformly small random perturbation and the condition of normal hyperbolicity, the original invariant manifold persists and becomes a random invariant manifold. The random counterpart has random local stable and unstable manifolds. They could be invariantly foliated thanks to the normal hyperbolicity. Those underlie an extension of the geometric singular perturbation theory to the random case which means the slow manifold persists and becomes a random manifold so that the local global structure near the slow manifold persists under singular perturbation. A normal form for a …

New Computational Techniques In Fjrw Theory With Applications To Landau Ginzburg Mirror Symmetry, Amanda Francis
Theses and Dissertations
Mirror symmetry is a phenomenon from physics that has inspired a lot of interesting mathematics. In the Landau-Ginzburg setting, we have two constructions, the A and B models, which are created based on a choice of an affine singularity with a group of symmetries. Both models are vector spaces equipped with multiplication and a pairing (making them Frobenius algebras), and they are also Frobenius manifolds. We give a result relating stabilization of singularities in classical singularity to its counterpart in the Landau-Ginzburg setting. The A model comes from so-called FJRW theory and can be de fined up to a full …

Diagonal Entry Restrictions In Minimum Rank Matrices, And The Inverse Inertia And Eigenvalue Problems For Graphs, Curtis G. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
Let F be a field, let G be an undirected graph on n vertices, and let SF(G) be the set of all F-valued symmetric n x n matrices whose nonzero off-diagonal entries occur in exactly the positions corresponding to the edges of G. Let MRF(G) be defined as the set of matrices in SF(G) whose rank achieves the minimum of the ranks of matrices in SF(G). We develop techniques involving Z-hat, a process termed nil forcing, and induced subgraphs, that can determine when diagonal entries corresponding to specific vertices of G must be zero or nonzero for all matrices in …
