Rat exposure to 60% O2 for 7 days (hyper-60) or to >95% O2 for 2 days followed by a 24-hour in room air (hyper-95R) confers susceptibility or tolerance, respectively, of the otherwise lethal effects of subsequent exposure to 100% O2. The objective of this study was to determine if lung retention of the radiopharmaceutical agent 99mTc-HMPAO (hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime) is differentially altered in hyper-60 and hyper-95R rats. Tissue retention of HMPAO is dependent on intracellular content of the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) and mitochondrial function. HMPAO was injected i.v. in anesthetized rats and planar images were acquired. …

Background: Despite decades of new discoveries in biomedical research, the overwhelming complexity of cells has been a significant barrier to a fundamental understanding of how cells work as a whole. As such, the holistic study of biochemical pathways requires computer modeling. Due to the complexity of cells, it is not feasible for one person or group to model the cell in its entirety. Results: The Cell Collective is a platform that allows the world-wide scientific community to create these models collectively. Its interface enables users to build and use models without specifying any mathematical equations or computer code - addressing …

Using Modeling And Simulation To Analyze Complex Aircraft, Kimberlee Margosian, Jason Lechniak
STAR Program Research Presentations
Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is used at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) on Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) to better understand physical phenomena on aircraft. M&S allows for the reduction of cost and risk by providing a better understanding of required flight tests and the interactions between various forces and the aircraft (i.e. wind resistance, pressure change, and temperature change). Without this process, the lives of pilots would be at a much greater risk when testing their aircraft and there would be little to no funds to fly due to the cost to repair or modify the aircraft. …

An Efficient Second Order In Time Scheme For Approximating Long Time Statistical Properties Of The Two Dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations, Xiaoming Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the long-time behavior of the following efficient second order in time scheme for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations in a periodic box: The scheme is a combination of a 2nd-order in time backward-differentiation and a particular explicit Adams-Bashforth treatment of the advection term. Therefore, only a linear constant coefficient Poisson solver is needed at each time step. We prove uniform in time bounds on this scheme in L 2, H per1 and H per2 provided that the time-step is sufficiently small. These time uniform estimates further lead to the convergence of long-time statistics (stationary statistical properties) of the scheme …

The Flight Opportunities Program (FOP) exemplifies NASA’s shift in policy from a public driven space industry towards an emphasis on public-private partnerships. The Payloads team, as part of FOP, is responsible for soliciting, selecting and shepherding payloads that require flight testing in order to mature technologies, not only to reduce risk in a deep space or manned space missions, but also to develop critical technologies with multiple applications in space. Several companies have been awarded contracts to provide these flight opportunities and each have unique capabilities to fly payloads in environments that closely imitate the environment of space missions. Oscillation And Spectral Theory For Linear Hamiltonian Systems With Nonlinear Dependence On The Spectral Parameter, Martin Bohner, Werner Kratz, Roman Šimon Hilscher
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we consider linear Hamiltonian differential systems which depend in general nonlinearly on the spectral parameter and with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our results generalize the known theory of linear Hamiltonian systems in two respects. Namely, we allow nonlinear dependence of the coefficients on the spectral parameter and at the same time we do not impose any controllability and strict normality assumptions. We introduce the notion of a finite eigenvalue and prove the oscillation theorem relating the number of finite eigenvalues which are less than or equal to a given value of the spectral parameter with the number of …

Orders On Intervals Over Partially Ordered Sets: Extending Allen's Algebra And Interval Graph Results, Francisco Zapata, Vladik Kreinovich, Cliff Joslyn, Emilie Hogan
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
To make a decision, we need to compare the values of quantities. In many practical situations, we know the values with interval uncertainty. In such situations, we need to compare intervals. Allen's algebra describes all possible relations between intervals on the real line which are generated by the ordering of endpoints; ordering relations between such intervals have also been well studied. In this paper, we extend this description to intervals in an arbitrary partially ordered set (poset). In particular, we explicitly describe ordering relations between intervals that generalize relation between points. As auxiliary results, we provide a logical interpretation of …

Possible And Necessary Orders, Equivalences, Etc.: From Modal Logic To Modal Mathematics, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In practice, we are often interested in order relations (e.g., when we describe preferences) or equivalence relations (e.g., when we describe clustering). Often, we do not have a complete information about the corresponding relation; as a result, we have several relations consistent with our knowledge. In such situations, it is desirable to know which elements a and b are possibly connected by the relation and which are necessarily connected by this relation. In this paper, we provide a full description of all such possible and necessary orders and equivalence relations. For example, possible orders are exactly reflexive relations, while necessary …

In Applications, A Rigorous Proof Is Not Enough: It Is Also Important To Have An Intuitive Understanding, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
From a purely mathematical viewpoint, once a statement is rigorously proven, it should be accepted as true. Surprisingly, in applications, users are often reluctant to accept a rigorously proven statement until the proof is supplemented by its intuitive explanation. In this paper, we show that this seemingly unreasonable reluctance makes perfect sense: the proven statement is about the mathematical model which is an approximation to the actual system; an intuitive explanation provides some confidence that the statement holds not only for the model, but also for systems approximately equal to this model -- in particular, for the actual system of …

One of the main objectives of statistics is to estimate the parameters of a probability distribution based on a sample taken from this distribution. Of course, since the sample is finite, the estimate X is, in general, different from the actual value x of the corresponding parameter. What we can require is that the corresponding estimate is unbiased, i.e., that the mean value of the difference X - x is equal to 0: E[X] = x. In some problems, unbiased estimates are not possible. We show that in some such problems, it is possible to have interval unbiased estimates, i.e., …

Modeling Daily Power Demand In Southern Kentucky: A Single Household Approach, Craig M. Dickson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this study, we use a nonparametric technique, locally weighted robust least squares regression (LOESS), to forecast a 24 hour demand profile at the household level and compare it to existing aggregate demand models discussed in literature. Of these aggregate demand models, a quadratic autoregressive model was selected to be used as a basis for comparison with the LOESS forecasts. It was our goal to automate the forecasting process by using the goodness of fit metric, AICCI, for smoothing parameter selection. The statistical workflow was executed using SAS and data was provided by the Glasgow Electric Plant Board of Barren …

Pricing Options On Foreign Currency With A Preset Exchange Rate, Avner Wolf, Christopher Heseel
Publications and Research
This paper presents a new option that can be used by agents for managing foreign exchange risk. Unlike the Garman Kolhagen model [1], (GK), this paper presents a new model with a preset exchange rate (PE), that allows the agent to take advantage of the his/her view on both the direction and magnitude of rate movement and as such provides this agent with more choices. The model has a provision for an automatic exchange of the payoff at a preset exchange rate, and upon expiration gives the agent the choice of keeping the payoff in the foreign currency or exchanging …

In many engineering situations, we need to take into account subjective user preferences; taking such preference into account is known as {\em Kansei Engineering}. In this paper, we formulate the problem of selecting optimal set of designs in Kansei engineering as a mathematical optimization problem, and we provide an explicit solution to this optimization problem.

Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group. If two elements have expressions that are cyclic shifts of each other (as words), then they are conjugate (as group elements) in W. We say that w is cyclically fully commutative (CFC) if every cyclic shift of any reduced expression for w is fully commutative (i.e., avoids long braid relations). These generalize Coxeter elements in that their reduced expressions can be described combinatorially by acyclic directed graphs, and cyclically shifting corresponds to source-to-sink conversions. In this paper, we explore the combinatorics of the CFC elements and enumerate them in all Coxeter groups. …

Characterizing And Supporting Change In Algebra Students' Representational Fluency In A Cas/Paper-And-Pencil Environment, Nicole L. Fonger
Dissertations
Representational fluency (RF) includes an ability to interpret, create, move within and among, and connect tool-based representations of mathematical objects. Taken as an indicator of conceptual understanding, there is a need to better support school algebra students’ RF in learning environments that utilize both computer algebra systems (CAS) and paper-and-pencil. The purpose of this research was to: (a) characterize change in ninth-grade algebra students’ RF in solving problems involving linear equations, and (b) determine conditions of a CAS and paper-and-pencil learning environment in which those students changed their RF.
Change in RF was measured by comparing results from initial to …

This study examined the current research that exists on Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) and how it would look when implemented into an 8th grade mathematics classroom. Additional questions examined are if CGI would develop strong student understanding between mathematical concepts and their real world applications; if CGI techniques and questioning impact the interest level of mathematics students; and what type of extra resources would be needed by teachers to implement Cognitively Guided Instruction into their curriculum. Although much of the CGI research has been done on elementary students, by also examining key algebra practices the author was able to synthesize …

Scholarship
Here we present a characterization of Sheffer-type polynomial sequences based on the isomorphism between the Riordan group and Sheffer group and the sequence characterization of Riordan arrays. We also give several alternative forms of the characterization of the Riordan group, Sheffer group and their subgroups. Formulas for the computation of the generating functions of Riordan arrays and Sheffer-type polynomial sequences from the characteristics are shown. Furthermore, the applications of the characteristics to lattice walks and recursive construction of Sheffer-type polynomial sequences are also given.

A fullerene is a 3-regular plane graph consisting only of pentagonal and hexagonal faces. Fullerenes are designed to model carbon molecules. The Clar number and Fries number are two parameters that are related to the stability of carbon molecules. We introduce chain decompositions, a new method to find lower bounds for the Clar and Fries numbers. In Chapter 3, we define the Clar structure for a fullerene, a less general decomposition designed to compute the Clar number for classes of fullerenes. We use these new decompositions to understand the structure of fullerenes and achieve several results. In Chapter 4, …
