Those who work with numbers eventually realize that they all have different personalities (the word "numbers" can of course be replaced by any number of other nouns here.) Here is one view of the issue.

How To Cook Up A Math Poem In N Easy Steps, Caleb Emmons
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
A mathematical poem attempts to distill a mathematical concept and present it in a literary or visually compelling way. This paper presents an outline of my own personal method of composing such poetry. The outline is elucidated via an extended meditation on the composition of one particular poem.

On Contemplation In Mathematics, Frank Lucas Wolcott
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
In a section about research, we make the case that intentional, structured reflection on the mathematical research process, by mathematical researchers themselves, would result in better mathematicians doing better mathematics. As supporting evidence, we describe the Flavors and Seasons project. In a section about teaching, we describe the contemplative education movement and share personal experiences using meditation in the math classroom. We conclude with an explicit proposal for elucidating the experiential context of mathematics, in both research and teaching environments.

Teaching The Complex Numbers: What History And Philosophy Of Mathematics Suggest, Emily R. Grosholz
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
The narrative about the nineteenth century favored by many philosophers of mathematics strongly influenced by either logic or algebra, is that geometric intuition led real and complex analysis astray until Cauchy and Kronecker in one sense and Dedekind in another guided mathematicians out of the labyrinth through the arithmetization of analysis. Yet the use of geometry in most cases in nineteenth century mathematics was not misleading and was often key to important developments. Thus the geometrization of complex numbers was essential to their acceptance and to the development of complex analysis; geometry provided the canonical examples that led to the …

I want to talk about the biggest life lesson that I have learned, and that I continue to learn over and over again. It is deep and profound. It has changed the way I relate with people. It has reshaped my academic life. And it continually renovates the way I approach my students.

On Mountain Pass Type Algorithms, James Bisgard
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
We consider constructive proofs of the mountain pass lemma, the saddle point theorem and a linking type theorem. In each, an initial “path” is deformed by pushing it downhill using a (pseudo) gradient flow, and, at each step, a high point on the deformed path is selected. Using these high points, a Palais–Smale sequence is constructed, and the classical minimax theorems are recovered. Because the sequence of high points is more accessible from a numerical point of view, we investigate the behavior of this sequence in the final two sections. We show that if the functional satisfies the Palais–Smale condition …

Discontinuous Parameter Estimates With Least Squares Estimators, J. L. Mead
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We discuss weighted least squares estimates of ill-conditioned linear inverse problems where weights are chosen to be inverse error covariance matrices. Least squares estimators are the maximum likelihood estimate for normally distributed data and parameters, but here we do not assume particular probability distributions. Weights for the estimator are found by ensuring its minimum follows a χ2 distribution. Previous work with this approach has shown that it is competitive with regularization methods such as the L-curve and Generalized Cross Validation (GCV) [20]. In this work we extend the method to find diagonal weighting matrices, rather than a scalar regularization …

From Solute Transport To Chemical Weathering, Allen Hunt, Thomas E. Skinner
Physics Seminars
A theory for conservative solute transport, based on concepts from percolation theory, is applied directly to reactive solute transport. Chemical reactions are assumed to have reached equilibrium at the scale of an individual pore, but at larger length scales, equilibration is limited by solute transport velocities, which are not the same as fluid velocities! The results of this theory already predicted observed dispersivity values for conservative solute transport over ten orders of magnitude of length scale as well as the variation of solute arrival time distributions with medium saturation. We now show that the solute velocity predicts the time-dependence of …
