Competition Super-Hypergraphs: Revealing Hierarchical Competition In Real-World Networks, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache 2025 University of New Mexico

Competition Super-Hypergraphs: Revealing Hierarchical Competition In Real-World Networks, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Graph theory provides a powerful language for modeling pairwise connections through vertices and edges [9, 20]. Hypergraphs generalize this idea by permitting hyperedges that join any number of vertices simultaneously [7], while super-hypergraphs iterate the Power-set operation to capture multi-level, hierarchical relationships among hyperedges [40, 22]. A competition hypergraph associates each prey species with a hyperedge containing all its predators, thereby encoding multi-way competition in ecological networks. In this work, we introduce the competition super-hypergraph, which lifts the competition concept to higher tiers of aggregation. We present its formal definition, explore theoretical properties, and illustrate its practical use in real-world …

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need for accurate and rapid diagnostic tools to assist clinical decision-making. Conventional deep learning models for COVID-19 detection in Chest X-Ray (CXR) images face challenges in poor generalization across imaging conditions and high computational demands. To address these issues, this study proposes CviTLNN, a novel hybrid model combining Vision Transformers (ViTs) and Liquid Neural Networks (LNNs) to improve feature extraction and classification. Specifically, CviTLNN employs a ViT with 24 transformer encoder blocks for efficient extraction of spatial features. The self-attention mechanism of ViTs effectively captures global and local dependencies in CXR images. Furthermore, …

Multipliers On Weighted Sequence Spaces, Gilbert Acheampong, Raymond Cheng 2025 Old Dominion University

Multipliers On Weighted Sequence Spaces, Gilbert Acheampong, Raymond Cheng

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The space ℓp,α of complex sequences a = (a0, a1,a2,...) for which

[[formula omitted]]

is studied. Each such sequence can be identified with the analytic function with power series

[[formula omitted]]

In this setting, the point evaluation and the difference quotient mappings are shown to be bounded; the cases are identified in which ℓp,α is boundedly contained in ℓr,β. Conditions on the parameters are derived for the analytic functions of ℓp,α to have radial limits almost everywhere on the boundary, and for ℓp,α to be an algebra. Smoothness properties of the boundary function are investigated. Basic properties of multipliers on …

Question 1: Why is it easier to see through rain than fog?

Start thinking about this by imagining a fixed volume (V) of water being dispersed into, say, N identical droplets of diameter d. Surface area and volume considerations should lead to the answer in terms of V and d.

Question 2: (a) How "long" (in meters) might such a rain shower or fog bank be?

Hint: Suppose you are looking along a linear stack of S cubes with 1-m sides (through the rain or fog). Each cube contains N drops. If p is the visibility (i.e., the fraction of …

There is a recent advancement in the field of mathematics and statistics to understand the geometry or connectedness of the data due to the massive amounts of data being generated. The data provided for analyses are usually very large and need to be organized and minimized in order to make it more useful and meaningful. In biostatistics or medical field, it is important for patients to have access to high-quality, safe and effective and/ or efficacious medical products. It is quite necessary to ascertain that the patients and their care-partners stay at the center of the regulatory decision-making process. In …

Multipliers Between ℓᴾ Spaces, Raymond Cheng 2025 Old Dominion University

Multipliers Between ℓᴾ Spaces, Raymond Cheng

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

For 0 < p ⩽ ∞ and 0 < r ⩽ ∞, the space 𝔐p,r of (coefficient) multipliers from ℓp and ℓr is completely characterized. This is elementary in most instances. The interesting case 0 < r < p < ∞ requires more effort, and it is shown that a sequence of complex numbers belongs to 𝔐p,r if and only if the sequence of their absolute values has a non increasing rearrangement (h0,h1,h2,...) satisfying

(∞

Σ (k +1)(p-r)/p (hrk - hrk+1)1/r) < ∞

k = 0

In that case, the expression on the left is the norm of the multiplier, and it is a compact operator. Further upper and lower bounds are given for the multiplier norm.

Optimal decision-making requires consideration of internal and external contexts. Biased decision-making is a transdiagnostic symptom of neuropsychiatric disorders. We created a computational model demonstrating how the striosome compartment of the striatum constructs a context-dependent mathematical space for decision-making computations, and how the matrix compartment uses this space to define action value. The model explains multiple experimental results and unifies other theories like reward prediction error, roles of the direct versus indirect pathways, and roles of the striosome versus matrix, under one framework. We also found, through new analyses, that striosome and matrix neurons increase their synchrony during difficult tasks, caused …

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The article discusses a low bridge in Keswick, England, near the River Greta, with an arch shaped like a semiellipse. It presents Fermi questions related to the bridge's dimensions, such as the maximum distance a person of a certain height can walk under it without hitting their head. The solutions involve mathematical calculations and approximations, including the use of formulas provided by the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

Moore Graphs, trevor Saxton 2025 The University of Akron

Moore Graphs, Trevor Saxton

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

A Moore graph is a simple regular graph, with n vertices, degree d, and diameter k, that satisfies the Moore bound: n = 1 + d (d − 1)k − 1 d − 2 . There are graphs for which the bound is met and in which existence and uniqueness are known. For k = 2 it is known that the Moore bound is achieved for d = 2, 3, 7, with the case of d = 57 conjectured to exist. For k = 3 the bound is achieved for only d = 3 [5]. Due to the construction of …

Isochronous And Period-Doubling Diagrams For Symplectic Maps Of The Plane, T. Zolkin, S. Nagaitsev, I. Morozov, S. Kladov, Y. -K. Kim

Physics Faculty Publications

Symplectic mappings of the plane serve as key models for exploring the fundamental nature of complex behavior in nonlinear systems. Central to this exploration is the effective visualization of stability regimes, which enables the interpretation of how systems evolve under varying conditions. While the area-preserving quadratic Hénon map has received significant theoretical attention, a comprehensive description of its mixed parameter-space dynamics remain lacking. This limitation arises from early attempts to reduce the full two-dimensional phase space to a one-dimensional projection, a simplification that resulted in the loss of important dynamical features. Consequently, there is a clear need for a more …

Cost-Effective Strategies For Feral Swine Control: Exploring Trapping Equipment Cooperatives, Phil Kenkel, Riza Radmehr, Rodney Holcomb, Mckenzie Boyce

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Feral swine (Sus scrofa) in the United States have become a growing concern, with a population of ≥6 million and causing annual damages of ≥$1.5 billion USD. Because of their high reproductive capacity, effective control methods are crucial to reducing or slowing their population growth. While remotely monitored and triggered traps have proven to be an effective control strategy, the cost of sophisticated trapping equipment, which can cost ≥$7,000 USD, is often cost prohibitive for many landowners. Despite the pressing need to address the challenge of making effective feral swine control methods more affordable, there are few studies …

Investigation Of Dynamic Adsorption And Desorption Of Polymer Nanogel In Porous Media Through Microfluidics, Junchen Liu, Fuqiao Bai, Abdulaziz A. Almakimi, Mingzhen Wei, Xiaoming He, Ibnelwaleed A. Hussein, Baojun Bai

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Understanding the transport and retention of elastic nanogel and microgel particles in porous media has been a significant research subject for decades, essential to the application of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). However, a lack of dynamic adsorption and desorption studies, in which the kinetics in porous media are seldom investigated, hinders the design and application of polymer nanogel in underground porous media. In this work, we visualized and quantified the transport and dynamic adsorption of polymer nanogel in 3D glass micromodels that were manufactured by packing glass beads in capillaries. Calibrating the linearity of fluorescence intensity to concentration, we calculated …

Analyzing Car Theft Trends In Central Texas: A Comparative Study Of Waco, College Station, And Killeen, Daniel Njogu

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This study examines motor vehicle theft (MVT) trends from 2019 to 2023 in three Central Texas cities—Waco, College Station, and Killeen—using temporal analysis, geospatial hotspot mapping, and make/model data. In Killeen, thefts generally rose over the period, with notable peaks in October and on Mondays. College Station saw an overall decline in thefts but experienced a seasonal spike each March, and Waco’s thefts increased until around 2021 before beginning to fall. Local festivals—such as the Spirit of Texas in College Station and the Heart O’ Texas Fair in Waco—appear to coincide with these seasonal upticks. Hyundais and Kias were most …

0th Order Solutions Of The Wavefunctions For The Quantum Elliptical Box And Microstrip Antenna, Nishtha Tikalal 2025 University of Central Florida

0th Order Solutions Of The Wavefunctions For The Quantum Elliptical Box And Microstrip Antenna, Nishtha Tikalal

Honors Undergraduate Theses

For a quantum particle confined to a two-dimensional elliptical box or electromagnetic wave in a microstrip antenna, geometrical and boundary condition interplay result in a spectrum of spatial patterns. Due to the asymmetrical nature of the ellipse, we are faced with continuous symmetry reductions, leaving both degenerate and nondegenerate solutions. Here, we present a complete derivation of an analytical solution and visualizations of the fundamental wavefunctions for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions respectively corresponding to the quantum elliptical box and the elliptical microstrip antenna.

We demonstrate that the eigenmodes, governed by eccentricity, directly correspond to the modal field distributions …

Frobenius And Commutative Pseudomonoids In The Bicategory Of Spans, Ivan Contreras, Rajan Amit Mehta, Walker H. Stern

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

In previous work by the first two authors, Frobenius and commutative algebra objects in the category of spans of sets were characterized in terms of simplicial sets satisfying certain properties. In this paper, we find a similar characterization for the analogous coherent structures in the bicategory of spans of sets. We show that commutative and Frobenius pseudomonoids in Span correspond, respectively, to paracyclic sets and Γ-sets satisfying the 2-Segal conditions. These results connect closely with work of the third author on A∞ algebras in ∞-categories of spans, as well as the growing body of work on higher Segal objects. Because …

Question 1: Why is it easier to see through rain than fog?

Start thinking about this by imagining a fixed volume (V) of water being dispersed into, say, N identical droplets of diameter d. Surface area and volume considerations should lead to the answer in terms of V and d.

Solution to Question 1: N = VI(πd³/6) = 6V/πd³ ≈ 2V/d³.

The cross-sectional area A of each drop is πd²/4 ≈ 3d²/4, so the total area blocked off (assuming no overlapping drops—so this is an upper bound) is NA ≈ 1.5V/d, so the area blocked off is inversely proportional to …

Extremal Trees For Random Walks, Ben Bridenbaugh 2025 Macalester College

Extremal Trees For Random Walks, Ben Bridenbaugh

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

A random walk is a sequence of adjacent vertices that are chosen uniformly at random from the neighbors of the previous vertex. An access time is the average length of time that a random walk takes to reach a target probability distribution from a starting probability distribution, given an optimal stopping rule. This paper deals with characterizing the trees of diameter d and on n vertices that extremize three different types of access times.
