Pharyngeal And Cervical Cancer Incidences Significantly Correlate With Personal Uv Doses Among Whites In The United States, Dianne E. Godar, Rong Tang, Stephen Merrill 2014 U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Pharyngeal And Cervical Cancer Incidences Significantly Correlate With Personal Uv Doses Among Whites In The United States, Dianne E. Godar, Rong Tang, Stephen Merrill

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Because we found UV-exposed oral tissue cells have reduced DNA repair and apoptotic cell death compared with skin tissue cells, we asked if a correlation existed between personal UV dose and the incidences of oral and pharyngeal cancer in the United States. We analyzed the International Agency for Research on Cancer's incidence data for oral and pharyngeal cancers by race (white and black) and sex using each state's average annual personal UV dose. We refer to our data as ‘white’ rather than ‘Caucasian,’ which is a specific subgroup of whites, and ‘black’ rather than African-American because blacks from other countries …

Cold Hard Fractals, David Buhl, Sam Morey 2014 Northern Michigan University

Cold Hard Fractals, David Buhl, Sam Morey

Journal Articles

Although many college mathematics students enjoy studying fractal geometry, more times than not, they question whether the content can be useful outside the classroom. This article describes a mathematical investigation that applied content from a fractal geometry unit to the real-world phenomena of ice formations on Lake Superior created by the recent winter.

Dressing Method And Quadratic Bundles Related To Symmetric Spaces: Vanishing Boundary Conditions, Tihomir Valchev 2014 Technological University Dublin

Dressing Method And Quadratic Bundles Related To Symmetric Spaces: Vanishing Boundary Conditions, Tihomir Valchev

Articles

We consider quadratic bundles related to Hermitian symmetric spaces of the type SU(m+n)/S(U(m) x U(n)). The simplest representative of the corresponding integrable hierarchy is given by a multi-component Kaup-Newell derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation which serves as a motivational example for our general considerations. We extensively discuss how one can apply Zakharov-Shabat's dressing procedure to derive reflectionless potentials obeying zero boundary conditions. Those could be used for one to construct fast decaying solutions to any nonlinear equation belonging to the same hierarchy. One can distinguish between generic soliton type solutions and rational solutions.

Confidence Bands For Survival Curves Using Model Assisted Cox Regression, Shoubhik Mondal 2014 New Jersey Institute of Technology

Confidence Bands For Survival Curves Using Model Assisted Cox Regression, Shoubhik Mondal

Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to develop informative subject-specific simultaneous confidence bands (SCBs) for survival functions from right censored data. The approach is based on an extension of semiparametric random censorship models (SRCMs) to Cox regression, which produces reliable and more informative SCBs. SRCMs derive their rationale from their ability to utilize parametric ideas within the random censorship environment. Incorporating SRCMs into the existing framework produces more powerful procedures to analyze right censored data. The first part of the project focuses on proposing new estimators of Cox regression parameters and the cumulative baseline hazard function, and deriving their large …

Efficient Domain Decomposition Algorithms For The Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation, Dawid Midura 2014 New Jersey Institute of Technology

Efficient Domain Decomposition Algorithms For The Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation, Dawid Midura

Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to formulate and investigate new iterative methods for the solution of scattering problems based on the domain decomposition approach. This work is divided into three parts. In the first part, a new domain decomposition method for the perfectly matched layer system of equations is presented. Analysis of a simple model problem shows that the convergence of the new algorithm is guaranteed provided that a non-local, square-root transmission operator is used. For efficiency, in practical simulations such operators need to be localized. Current, state of the art domain decomposition algorithms use the localization technique based …

Skilled-Unskilled Wage Inequality: Economic Theory And Policy., Priya Brata Dutta Dr. 2014 Indian Statistical Institute

Skilled-Unskilled Wage Inequality: Economic Theory And Policy., Priya Brata Dutta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Globalization and Skilled-unskilled wage inequality Globalization is the process of integration various economies of the world without creating any hindrances in the free flow of goods and services, technology, capital and even labour of human capital. The term, globalization has, therefore, following parameters: (i) Reduction of trade barriers to permit free flow of goods and services among nation-states; (ii) Creation of environment in which free flow of capital can take place among nation states; (iii) Creation of environment, permitting free flow of technology; and (iv) Last, but not least, from the point of view of developing countries, creation of environment …

Graph Theoretic Methods For The Analysis Of Data In Developing Systems, Kris H. Green, Bernard P. Ricca 2014 St. John Fisher University

Graph Theoretic Methods For The Analysis Of Data In Developing Systems, Kris H. Green, Bernard P. Ricca

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Faculty/Staff Publications

A full examination of learning or developing systems requires data analysis approaches beyond the commonplace pre-/post-testing. Drawing on graph theory, three particular approaches to the analysis of data—based on adjacency matrices, affiliation networks, and edit distances—can provide additional insight into data; these methods are applied to student performance in a Calculus course. Data analysis methods based on adjacency matrices demonstrate that learning is not unidimensional, that learning progressions do not always progress monotonically toward desired understandings and also provide insight into the connection between instruction and student learning. The use of affiliation networks supports the concept development theory of Lev …

Mechanisms Of Elastic Enhancement And Hindrance For Finite-Length Undulatory Swimmers In Viscoelastic Fluids, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy 2014 University of California, Davis

Mechanisms Of Elastic Enhancement And Hindrance For Finite-Length Undulatory Swimmers In Viscoelastic Fluids, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

A computational model of finite-length undulatory swimmers is used to examine the physical origin of the effect of elasticity on swimming speed. We explore two distinct target swimming strokes: one derived from the motion of Caenorhabditis elegans, with large head undulations, and a contrasting stroke with large tail undulations. We show that both favorable stroke asymmetry and swimmer elasticity contribute to a speed-up, but a substantial boost results only when these two effects work together. We reproduce conflicting results from the literature simply by changing relevant physical parameters.

Towards A Lightweight Approach For Modding Serious Educational Games: Assisting Novice Designers, Jacob Dahleen, Alex Hunsberger, Ryan Weber, Dennis Brylow, C. Shaun Longstreet, Kendra M. L. Cooper 2014 Marquette University

Towards A Lightweight Approach For Modding Serious Educational Games: Assisting Novice Designers, Jacob Dahleen, Alex Hunsberger, Ryan Weber, Dennis Brylow, C. Shaun Longstreet, Kendra M. L. Cooper

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Serious educational games (SEGs) are a growing segment of the education community’s pedagogical toolbox. Effectively creating such games remains challenging, as teachers and industry trainers are content experts; typically they are not game designers with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to create a quality SEG. Here, a lightweight approach to interactively explore and modify existing SEGs is introduced, a toll that can be broadly adopted by educators for pedagogically sound SEGs. Novice game designers can rapidly explore the educational and traditional elements of a game, with a stress on tracking the SEG learning objectives, as well as allowing …
