A Statistical Analysis Of The Role Of Critical-Thinking Games In College Students' Quantitative Reasoning, Melissa Radevicz
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Improving college students' quantitative reasoning is crucial to increase STEM-field retention rates. The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), results indicate that "college students don't always get exposure to activities that develop [quantitative reasoning]" (Berrett & Sander, 2013). This study aimed to engage college students in quantitative reasoning through critical-thinking games. Phase 1, conducted in summer 2014 with a university research grant, involved a correlation analysis of the work of 133 college students enrolled in Elementary Statistics I, Chemical Principles II, Elements of Calculus, Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry, Multivariable Calculus, and Differential Equations. Participants held a variety of 39 different majors, …

Computing Singular Values Of Large Matrices With An Inverse-Free Preconditioned Krylov Subspace Method, Qiao Liang, Qiang Ye
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We present an efficient algorithm for computing a few extreme singular values of a large sparse m×n matrix C. Our algorithm is based on reformulating the singular value problem as an eigenvalue problem for CTC. To address the clustering of the singular values, we develop an inverse-free preconditioned Krylov subspace method to accelerate convergence. We consider preconditioning that is based on robust incomplete factorizations, and we discuss various implementation issues. Extensive numerical tests are presented to demonstrate efficiency and robustness of the new algorithm.

Polynomials With Prescribed Bad Primes, David P. Roberts
Mathematics Publications
We tabulate polynomials in ℚ[t] with a given factorization partition, bad reduction entirely within a given set of primes, and satisfying auxiliary conditions associated to 0, 1, and ∞. We explain how these polynomials are of particular interest because of their role in the construction of nonsolvable number fields of arbitrarily large degree and bounded ramification.

K-Theory Of Quadratic Modules: A Study Of Roy's Elementary Orthogonal Group., A. A. Ambily Dr.
Doctoral Theses
This thesis discusses the K-theory of quadratic modules by studying Roys elementary orthogonal group of the quadratic space Q1H(P) over a commutative ring A. We estab- lish a set of commutator relations among the elementary generators of Roys elementary orthogonal group and use this to prove Quillens local-global principle for this elementary group. We also obtain a result on extendability of quadratic modules. We establish nor- mality of the elementary orthogonal group under certain conditions and prove stability results for the Ki group of this orthogonal group. We also prove that Roys elementary orthogonal group and Petrovs odd hyperbolic unitary …

The stability of a communication network is one of the important parameters for network designers and users. A communication network can be considered to be highly vulnerable if the destruction of a few elements cause large damage and only few members are able to communicate. In a communication network several vulnerability measures like binding number, toughness, scattering number, integrity, tenacity, edge tenacity and rupture degree are used to determine the resistance of network to the disruption after the failure of certain nodes (vertices) or communication links (edges). Domination theory also provides a model to measure the vulnerability of a graph …

Classical And Motivic Adams Charts, Daniel C. Isaksen
Mathematics Research Reports
This document contains large-format Adams charts that compute 2-complete stable homotopy groups, both in the classical context and in the motivic context over C. The charts are essentially complete through the 59-stem and contain partial results to the 70-stem. In the classical context, we believe that these are the most accurate charts of their kind. We also include Adams charts for the motivic homotopy groups of the cofiber of τ.

Long Wavelength Analysis Of A Model For The Geographic Spread Of A Disease, Layachi Hadji
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We investigate the temporal and spatial evolution of the spread of an infectious disease by performing a long-wavelength analysis of a classical model for the geographic spread of a rabies epidemic in a population of foxes subject to idealized boundary conditions. We consider twodimensional and three-dimensional landscapes consisting of an infinite horizontal strip bounded by two walls a finite distance apart and a horizontal region bounded above and below by horizontal walls, respectively. A nonlinear partial differential evolution Equation for the leading order of infectives is derived. The Equation captures the space and time variations of the spread of the …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we prove the existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of initial data on mild solutions of first order semilinear functional impulsive mixed integro-differential equations with nonlocal condition in general Banach spaces. The results are obtained by using the semigroup theory and Banach contraction theorem.

A Price-Volume Model For A Single-Period Stock Market, Yun Chen-Shue
HIM 1990-2015
The intention of this thesis is to provide a primitive mathematical model for a financial market in which tradings affect the asset prices. Currently, the idea of a price-volume relationship is typically used in the form of empirical models for specific cases. Among the theoretical models that have been used in stock markets, few included the volume parameter. The thesis provides a general theoretical model with the volume parameter for the intention of a broader use. The core of the model is the correlation between trading volume and stock price, indicating that volume should be a function of the stock …

Dominating sets are widely applied in the design and efficient use of computer networks. They can be used to decide the placement of limited resources, so that every node has access to the resource through neighbouring node. The most efficient solution is one that avoids duplication of access to the resources. This more restricted version of minimum dominating set is called an private dominating set. A vertex v in a digraph D is called a private out-neighbor of the vertex u in S (subset of V(D)) if u is the only element in the intersection of in-neighborhood set of v …

In this paper, we deal with the existence of a positive solution for 2nd and 3rd order boundary value problem by first defining their respective Green’s function. The Green’s function is used to derive the Green’s function for the 2nth and 3nth order boundary value problem, respectively, where n is a positive integer. The Green’s function is also used to derive conditions for positive solution of the 2nth and 3nth order eigen value differential equation, respectively.

Landscape structure is important for shaping the abundance and distribution of amphibians, but prior studies of landscape effects have been species or ecosystem-specific. Using a large-scale, citizen science-generated database, we examined the effects of habitat composition, road disturbance, and habitat split (i.e. the isolation of wetland from forest by intervening land use) on the distribution and richness of frogs and toads in the eastern and central United States. Undergraduates from nine biology and environmental science courses collated occupancy data and characterized landscape structure at 1617 sampling locations from the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program. Our analysis revealed that anuran species …

The Existence Of A Discontinuous Homomorphism Requires A Strong Axiom Of Choice, Michael Steven Andersen
Theses and Dissertations
Conner and Spencer used ultrafilters to construct homomorphisms between fundamental groups that could not be induced by continuous functions between the underlying spaces. We use methods from Shelah and Pawlikowski to prove that Conner and Spencer could not have constructed these homomorphisms with a weak version of the Axiom of Choice. This led us to define and examine a class of pathological objects that cannot be constructed without a strong version of the Axiom of Choice, which we call the class of inscrutable objects. Objects that do not need a strong version of the Axiom of Choice are scrutable. We …

Bhaskara’S Approximation For The Sine, Karel Stroethoff
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The 7th century Indian mathematician Bhaskara (c.600 – c.680) obtained a remarkable approximation for the sine function. Many subsequent ancient authors have given versions of this rule, but none provided a proof or described how the result was obtained. Grover [1] provides a possible explanation, but I think the rule can be explained more clearly. Rather than give the rule first, we will derive it, and then discuss its accuracy, and explore some alternative approximations. Our derivation is simply an exercise in modeling.

This article describes a computer program for numerically integrating under a y(x) curve of experimental data where the abscissa values are not equally-spaced. This technique is based on fitting parabolas to successive groups of three data points, and may be regarded as a generalization of Simpson’s rule.
