The Packing Chromatic Number Of Random D-Regular Graphs, Ann Wells Clifton 2015 University of South Carolina

The Packing Chromatic Number Of Random D-Regular Graphs, Ann Wells Clifton

Theses and Dissertations

Let G = (V (G),E(G)) be a simple graph of order n and let i be a positive integer. Xi superset V (G) is called an i-packing if vertices in Xi are pairwise distance more than i apart. A packing coloring of G is a partition X = {X1,X2,X3, . . . ,Xk} of V (G) such that each color class Xi is an i-packing. The minimum order k of a packing coloring is called the packing chromatic number of G, denoted by Xp(G). Let Gn,d …

Chebyshev Polynomials And The Frohman-Gelca Formula, Heather M. Russell, Hoel Queffelec 2015 University of Richmond

Chebyshev Polynomials And The Frohman-Gelca Formula, Heather M. Russell, Hoel Queffelec

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Using Chebyshev polynomials, C. Frohman and R. Gelca introduced a basis of the Kauffman bracket skein module of the torus. This basis is especially useful because the Jones–Kauffman product can be described via a very simple Product-to-Sum formula. Presented in this work is a diagrammatic proof of this formula, which emphasizes and demystifies the role played by Chebyshev polynomials.

Enhancement On Counting Invariant On Symmetric Virtual Biracks, Melinda Ho 2015 Scripps College

Enhancement On Counting Invariant On Symmetric Virtual Biracks, Melinda Ho

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis introduces a new enhancement for virtual birack counting invariants. We first introduce knots and other general types of knots (oriented knots, framed knots, racks, and biracks). Then we’ll discuss the methods, knot invariants, mathematicians use to identify whether two knots are different. Next we’ll look at knots with virtual crossings and knots with a good involution. Finally, we introduce a new symmetric enhancement for virtual birack counting invariants and provide an example.

Chaos And Learning In Discrete-Time Neural Networks, Jess M. Banks 2015 Oberlin College

Chaos And Learning In Discrete-Time Neural Networks, Jess M. Banks

Honors Papers

We study a family of discrete-time recurrent neural network models in which the synaptic connectivity changes slowly with respect to the neuronal dynamics. The fast (neuronal) dynamics of these models display a wealth of behaviors ranging from simple convergence and oscillation to chaos, and the addition of slow (synaptic) dynamics which mimic the biological mechanisms of learning and memory induces complex multiscale dynamics which render rigorous analysis quite difficult. Nevertheless, we prove a general result on the interplay of these two dynamical timescales, demarcating a regime of parameter space within which a gradual dampening of chaotic neuronal behavior is induced …

Tropical Linear Algebra: Notions Of Rank Over The Tropical Semiring, William D. Wise 2015 Oberlin College

Tropical Linear Algebra: Notions Of Rank Over The Tropical Semiring, William D. Wise

Honors Papers

Three formulations of the rank of a matrix that are equivalent in classical linear algebra give rise to distinct notions of rank over the tropical semiring. This paper explores these three concepts of tropical rank and their relationships with one another, working up to a proof of the inequality that relates the three.

Unavoidable Minors Of Large 4-Connected Bicircular Matroids, Deborah Chun, Tyler Moss, Dan Slilaty, Xiangqian Zhou 2015 Wright State University - Main Campus

Unavoidable Minors Of Large 4-Connected Bicircular Matroids, Deborah Chun, Tyler Moss, Dan Slilaty, Xiangqian Zhou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

It is known that any 3-connected matroid that is large enough is certain to contain a minor of a given size belonging to one of a few special classes of matroids. This paper proves a similar unavoidable minor result for large 4-connected bicircular matroids. The main result follows from establishing the list of unavoidable minors of large 4-biconnected graphs, which are the graphs representing the 4-connected bicircular matroids. This paper also gives similar results for internally 4-connected and vertically 4-connected bicircular matroids.

Price, Perceived Value And Customer Satisfaction: A Text-Based Econometric Analysis Of Yelp! Reviews, Eleanor A. Dwyer 2015 Scripps College

Price, Perceived Value And Customer Satisfaction: A Text-Based Econometric Analysis Of Yelp! Reviews, Eleanor A. Dwyer

Scripps Senior Theses

We examine the antecedents of customer satisfaction in the restaurant sector, paying particular attention to perceived value and price level. Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, we extract latent topics from the text of Yelp! reviews, then analyze the relationship between these topics and satisfaction, measured as the difference between review rating and user average review rating.

A Survey On Reverse Carleson Measures, Emmanuel Fricain, Andreas Hartmann, William T. Ross 2015 University of Richmond

A Survey On Reverse Carleson Measures, Emmanuel Fricain, Andreas Hartmann, William T. Ross

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This is a survey on reverse Carleson measures for various Hilbert spaces of analytic functions. These spaces include the Hardy, Bergman, certain harmonically weighted Dirichlet, Paley-Wiener, Fock, model (backward shift invariant), and de Branges-Rovnyak spaces. The reverse Carleson measure for backward shift invariant subspaces in the non-Hilbert situation is new.

Partial Orders On Partial Isometries, William T. Ross, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Robert T. W. Martin 2015 University of Richmond

Partial Orders On Partial Isometries, William T. Ross, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Robert T. W. Martin

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper studies three natural pre-orders of increasing generality on the set of all completely non-unitary partial isometries with equal defect indices. We show that the problem of determining when one partial isometry is less than another with respect to these pre-orders is equivalent to the existence of a bounded (or isometric) multiplier between two natural reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions. For large classes of partial isometries these spaces can be realized as the well-known model subspaces and deBranges-Rovnyak spaces. This characterization is applied to investigate properties of these pre-orders and the equivalence classes they generate.

Weak Parallelogram Laws On Banach Spaces And Applications To Prediction, William T. Ross, R. Cheng 2015 University of Richmond

Weak Parallelogram Laws On Banach Spaces And Applications To Prediction, William T. Ross, R. Cheng

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper concerns a family of weak parallelogram laws for Banach spaces. It is shown that the familiar Lebesgue spaces satisfy a range of these inequalities. Connections are made to basic geometric ideas, such as smoothness, convexity, and Pythagorean-type theorems. The results are applied to the linear prediction of random processes spanning a Banach space. In particular, the weak parallelogram laws furnish coefficient growth estimates, Baxter-type inequalities, and criteria for regularity.

The Robinson-Schensted Correspondence And A2-Web Bases, Heather M. Russell, Matthew Housley, Julianna Tymoczko 2015 University of Richmond

The Robinson-Schensted Correspondence And A2-Web Bases, Heather M. Russell, Matthew Housley, Julianna Tymoczko

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We study natural bases for two constructions of the irreducible representation of the symmetric group corresponding to [n; n; n]: the reduced web basis associated to Kuperberg's combinatorial description of the spider category; and the left cell basis for the left cell construction of Kazhdan and Lusztig. In the case of [n; n], the spider category is the Temperley-Lieb category; reduced webs correspond to planar matchings, which are equivalent to left cell bases. This paper compares the image of these bases under classical maps: the Robinson-Schensted algorithm between permutations and Young tableaux and Khovanov-Kuperberg's bijection between …

Preparing Secondary Mathematics Teachers: Focus On Modeling In Algebra, Hyunyi Jung, Alexia Mintos, Jill Newton

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

This study addressed the opportunities to learn (OTL) modeling in algebra provided to secondary mathematics pre-service teachers (PSTs). To investigate these OTL, we interviewed five instructors of required mathematics and mathematics education courses that had the potential to include opportunities for PSTs to learn algebra at three universities. We also interviewed a group of three to four PSTs at each of the universities. We coded the interview transcripts using an analytic framework developed based on related literature and policy documents. We report the similarities and differences in perspectives among instructors and PSTs related to modeling at each university, along with …

Characterizations Of Gamma Distribution Via Sub-Independent Random Variables, Gholamhossein Hamedani 2015 Marquette University

Characterizations Of Gamma Distribution Via Sub-Independent Random Variables, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The concept of sub-independence is based on the convolution of the distributions of the random variables. It is much weaker than that of independence, but is shown to be sufficient to yield the conclusions of important theorems and results in probability and statistics. It also provides a measure of dissociation between two random variables which is much stronger than uncorrelatedness. Inspired by the excellent work of Jin and Lee (2014), we present certain characterizations of gamma distribution based on the concept of sub-independence.

Kumaraswamy-Half-Cauchy Distribution: Characterizations And Related Results, Gholamhossein Hamedani, I. Ghosh

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We present various characterizations of a recently introduced distribution (Ghosh 2014), called Kumaraswamy- Half- Cauchy distribution based on: (i) a simple relation between two truncated moments; (ii) truncated moment of certain function of the 1st order statistic; (iii) truncated moment of certain function of the random variable; (iv) hazard function; (v) distribution of the 1st order statistic; (vi) via record values. We also provide some remarks on bivariate Gumbel copula distribution whose marginal distributions are Kumaraswamy- Half-Cauchy distributions.
