Trade theorists, have generally been concerned with three basic questions: Why do countries engage in trade? What is the pattern of trade? and What are the gains from trade? These questions have remained the focal point of inquiry from the times of Adam Smith till the present day. The first two questions inquire, respectively about the causes of trade, and if trade indeed takes place, then about the pattern of specialization of each country in the post trade situation. These are thus questions of positive economics. The third point of inquiry is normative. This is because, gains and losses from …

Superconvergence Of Finite Element Approximations For Second-Order Elliptic Problems By L^2-Projection Methods, Anna Harris
Theses and Dissertations
The superconvergence of finite element approximations is an important and useful phenomenon and has been an active research area in numerical analysis. A brief definition of the superconvergence of the finite element methods (FEMs) is methods to improve the convergence rate by post-processing an exiting finite element solution so that the new approximation is closer to the exact solution than the existing finite element solution. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the superconvergence of different finite element methods for second-order elliptic problems. The finite element methods include the conforming finite element method (CFEM), the non-conforming finite element method …

Concerns About Least Squares Estimation For The Three-Parameter Weibull Distribution: Case Study Of Statistical Software, William V. Harper, Thomas R. James
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
Least Squares estimation of the 2-parameter Weibull distribution is straightforward; however, there are multiple methods for least squares estimation of the 3-parameter Weibull. The third parameter for the 3-parameter Weibull distribution shifts the origin from 0 to some generally positive value sometimes called the location, threshold, or minimum life. The different methods used by the packages result in fairly major differences in the estimated parameters between the statistical packages. This may have implications for those needing to estimate or apply the results of a 3-parameter Weibull distribution that is used frequently in practice. The results are analyzed in detail based …

The Design And Validation Of A Group Theory Concept Inventory, Kathleen Mary Melhuish
Dissertations and Theses
Within undergraduate mathematics education, there are few validated instruments designed for large-scale usage. The Group Concept Inventory (GCI) was created as an instrument to evaluate student conceptions related to introductory group theory topics. The inventory was created in three phases: domain analysis, question creation, and field-testing. The domain analysis phase included using an expert consensus protocol to arrive at the topics to be assessed, analyzing curriculum, and reviewing literature. From this analysis, items were created, evaluated, and field-tested. First, 383 students answered open-ended versions of the question set. The questions were converted to multiple-choice format from these responses and disseminated …

A Survey Of Mathematical Models Of Dengue Fever, James P. Braselton, Iurii Bakach
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we compare and contrast five models of dengue fever, a serious illness that affects tropical and subtropical areas around the world. We evaluate each model using different scenarios and identify the strengths and weakness of each of the models. The goal of our analysis is to indicate the strengths and weaknesses of current mathematical models of dengue fever that should assist future researchers in forming models that accurately measure the variables they are studying that affect the spread and progression of the disease.

Spontaneous Synchrony On Graphs And The Emergence Of Order From Disorder, Dylan Linville, Daniel Trugillo Martins Fontes
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
From pulsars to pedestrians and bacteria to brain cells, objects that exhibit cyclical behavior, called oscillators, are found in a variety of different settings. When oscillators adjust their behavior in response to nearby oscillators, they often achieve a state of synchrony, in which they all have the same phase and frequency. Here, we explore the Kuramoto model, a simple and general model which describes oscillators as dynamical systems on a graph and has been used to study synchronization in systems ranging from firefly swarms to the power grid. We discuss analytical and numerical methods used to investigate the governing system …

Based on [previous publication*], we develop a global correspondence between immersed hypersurfaces ϕ:Mn→Hn+1ϕ:Mn→Hn+1 satisfying an exterior horosphere condition, also called here horospherically concave hypersurfaces, and complete conformal metrics e2ρgSne2ρgSn on domains Ω in the boundary SnSn at infinity of Hn+1Hn+1, where ρ is the horospherical support function, ∂∞ϕ(Mn)=∂Ω∂∞ϕ(Mn)=∂Ω, and Ω is the image of the Gauss map G:Mn→SnG:Mn→Sn. To do so we first establish results on when the Gauss map G:Mn→SnG:Mn→Sn is injective. We also …

Conditions on the Koszul complex of a noetherian local ring R guarantee that TorRi(M,N) is non-zero for infinitely many i, when M and N are finitely generated R-modules of infinite projective dimension. These conditions are obtained from results concerning Tor of differential graded modules over certain trivial extensions of commutative differential graded algebras.

Global Optimized Isothermal And Nonlinear Models Of Earth’S Standard Atmosphere, Nihad E. Daidzic, Ph.D.,
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Both, a global isothermal temperature model and a nonlinear quadratic temperature model of the ISA was developed and presented here. Constrained optimization techniques in conjunction with the least-square-root approximations were used to design best-fit isothermal models for ISA pressure and density changes up to 47 geopotential km for NLPAM, and 86 orthometric km for ISOAM respectively. The mass of the dry atmosphere and the relevant fractional-mass scale heights have been computed utilizing the very accurate eight-point Gauss-Legendre numerical quadrature for both ISOAM and NLPAM. Both, the ISOAM and the NLPAM represent viable alternatives to ISA in many practical applications and …

In many situation, we have an (approximately) linear dependence between several quantities y = f(x1, ..., xn). The variance v of the corresponding approximation error often depends on the values of the quantities x1, ..., xn: v = v(x1, ..., xn); the function describing this dependence is known as the skedactic function. Empirically, two classes of skedactic functions are most successful: multiplicative functions v = c * |x1|γ1 * ... * |xn|γn and exponential functions v = exp(α + …

Smooth Representation Of Functions On Non-Periodic Domains By Means Of The Fourier Continuation Method, Nicholas Rubel, David Bilyeu, Justin Koo
STAR Program Research Presentations
This report examines a new methodology in solving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) numerically. The report also studies the accuracy of this new method as a PDE solver. This new Fourier Continuation (FC) method is one of a few that avoids the well-known Gibbs Phenomenon, which is the overestimation or underestimation of a function. These estimations are oscillations around a “jump” when a non-periodic function is expressed in terms of sines and cosines. Instead, the FC algorithm creates a smooth, periodic extension of a function over a general domain, as demonstrated by the many examples presented here. The FC algorithm was …

Communicating mathematics well is an important part of doing mathematics. Many of us know from writing papers or giving talks that communicating effectively not only serves our audience but also clarifies and structures our own thinking. There is an art and elegance to good writing that every writer should strive for. And writing, as a work of art, can bring a person great personal satisfaction.
Within the MAA, we value exposition and mathematical communication. In this column, I’m sharing the advice I give my students to help them write well. There are more extensive treatments (e.g., see Paul Halmos’s How …

The genre of math lit for children is not huge, but it is growing. My kid loves the early reader books by my friend and colleague Julie Glass (A Dollar for Penny (1998), The Fly On the Ceiling (2000)). I found Izolda Fotiyeva’s Math with Mom (2003) too late for my daughter but will definitely read it with my son. For a neat twist on the traditional alphabet book, I recommend The Technical Alphabet (2014) by the engineer sisters Lavanya and Melissa Jawaharlal. More recently a colleague introduced me to Laura Overdeck’s Bedtime Math series; these will soon join …

To optimize profit, pricing is of great importance for each company, especially when competitors exist. The optimal pricing strategy we are interested in is to achieve Nash equilibrium (NE) to prevent malignant competition. In this work, we study dynamic pricing for a duopoly with two competing sellers, each of which sells one product, using a simple linear model which incorporates the competition effect. Motivated from the modified pricing policy constructed in Liu and Cooper [12], we propose a policy, referred to as randomized certainty equivalent pricing (RCEP) policy, under which each seller applies certainty equivalent pricing (CEP) policy for most …
