Characterizing The "Realistic-Ness" Of Word Problems In Secondary Mathematics Textbooks, Mary L. Dalton 2017 Montclair State University

Characterizing The "Realistic-Ness" Of Word Problems In Secondary Mathematics Textbooks, Mary L. Dalton

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Word problems are an integral part of any secondary mathematics curriculum and one purpose has been to prepare students for the real-world – for everyday events as well as workplace problem-solving. Prior literature suggests that word problems have not met this objective, in part, because the textbook problems do not mirror the kinds of problems commonly found in real life situations.

In this dissertation, I investigate a sample of word problems from two contemporary non-traditional textbooks to uncover the aspects that may influence if and how the problems might be used in the classroom. I utilize a qualitative content analysis …

A Study On Factors Affecting Sleep During Pregnancy In Clinical Trials, Zihan Yan 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

A Study On Factors Affecting Sleep During Pregnancy In Clinical Trials, Zihan Yan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Regular sleep is required for sensory processing, learning, and brain plasticity. During pregnancy, poor sleep quality and dysregulation of hormones are all associated with increased risk for diseases like postpartum major depression[1]. Seventy-eight percent of pregnant women experience sleep problems at some point during pregnancy according to the National Sleep Foundation's 1998 Women and Sleep poll. Chronodisruption is a frequent sleep disturbance experienced by pregnant women that can be primary or due to co-morbid conditions[2]. For this reason, chronodisruption, which includes insomnia, is currently regarded as one of the most important factors determining pregnancy outcome. …

Normalized Cut Problems With Generalized Linear Constraints, Ivan Ruiz 2017 University of Texas at Arlington

Normalized Cut Problems With Generalized Linear Constraints, Ivan Ruiz

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

Several methods are used to process images in many fields, including clustering, image segmentation and medical imaging. The so-called graph-cut methods in graph theory are widely used for image segmentation. In these methods graphs determining the relation between several objects are divided into one or more pieces in order to solve a variety of problems. Most of these methods are unsupervised, which means there is no information known about the data objects. In some of the applications listed above some prior knowledge may be known. Using this prior knowledge can be the key to designing better methods. A novel algorithm …

Residuated Maps, The Way-Below Relation, And Contractions On Probabilistic Metric Spaces., M. Ryan Luke 2017 University of Louisville

Residuated Maps, The Way-Below Relation, And Contractions On Probabilistic Metric Spaces., M. Ryan Luke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we will examine residuated mappings on a function lattice and how they behave with respect to the way-below relation. In particular, which residuated $\phi$ has the property that $F$ is way-below $\phi(F)$ for $F$ in appropriate sets. We show the way-below relation describes the separation of two functions and how this corresponds to contraction mappings on probabilistic metric spaces. A new definition for contractions is considered using the way-below relation.

Extending Difference Of Votes Rules On Three Voting Models., Sarah Schulz King 2017 University of Louisville

Extending Difference Of Votes Rules On Three Voting Models., Sarah Schulz King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a voting situation where there are only two competing alternatives, simple majority rule outputs the alternatives with the most votes or declares a tie if both alternatives receive the same number of votes. For any non-negative integer k, the difference of votes rule Mk outputs the alternative that beats the competing alternative by more than k votes. Llamazares (2006) gives a characterization of the difference of votes rules in terms of five axioms. In this thesis, we extend Llamazares' result by completely describing the class of voting rules that satisfy only two out of his five axioms. …

Antichains And Diameters Of Set Systems, Brent McKain 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Antichains And Diameters Of Set Systems, Brent Mckain

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this thesis, we present a number of results, mostly concerning set systems that are antichains and/or have bounded diameter. Chapter 1 gives a more detailed outline of the thesis. In Chapter 2, we give a new short proof of Kleitman's theorem concerning the maximal size of a set system with bounded diameter. In Chapter 3, we turn our attention to antichains with bounded diameter. Šileikis conjectured that an antichain of diameter D has size at most (n/D/2). We present several partial results towards the conjecture.

In 2014, Leader and Long gave asymptotic bounds on the size of …

A Study On The Nonlocal Shallow-Water Model Arising From The Full Water Waves With The Coriolis Effect, Junwei Sun 2017 University of Texas at Arlington

A Study On The Nonlocal Shallow-Water Model Arising From The Full Water Waves With The Coriolis Effect, Junwei Sun

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

The Equatorial Undercurrent is a significant feature of the geophysical waves near the equator, which is one of the key factors to explain El Niño phenomenon. However, based on β-plane approximation, the classical theory of geophysical waves ignored the vertical structure of the Equatorial Undercurrent. To obtain a better description of the equatorial waves, in this dissertation, I study the rotational-Camassa-Holm (R-CH) equation, which is a mathematical model of long-crested water waves near the equator, propagating mainly in one direction with the effect of Earth's rotation under the f-plane approximation. R-CH equation can be derived by following the formal asymptotic …

The Role Of The Receptive Field Structure In Neuronal Compressive Sensing Signal Processing, Victor J. Barranca, George Zhu , '17 2017 Swarthmore College

The Role Of The Receptive Field Structure In Neuronal Compressive Sensing Signal Processing, Victor J. Barranca, George Zhu , '17

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

The receptive field structure ubiquitous in the visual system is believed to play a crucial role in encoding stimulus characteristics, such as contrast and spectral composition. However, receptive field architecture may also result in unforeseen difficulties in processing particular classes of images. We explore the potential functional benefits and shortcomings of localization and center-surround paradigms in the context of an integrate-and-fire neuronal network model. Utilizing the sparsity of natural scenes, we derive a compressive-sensing based theoretical framework for network input reconstructions based on neuronal firing rate dynamics [1, 2]. This formalism underlines a potential mechanism for efficiently transmitting sparse stimulus …

Ideal Containments Under Flat Extensions And Interpolation On Linear Systems In P2, Solomon Akesseh 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Ideal Containments Under Flat Extensions And Interpolation On Linear Systems In P2, Solomon Akesseh

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fat points and their ideals have stimulated a lot of research but this dissertation concerns itself with aspects of only two of them, broadly categorized here as, the ideal containments and polynomial interpolation problems.

Ein-Lazarsfeld-Smith and Hochster-Huneke cumulatively showed that for all ideals I in k[Pn], I(mn) ⊆ Im for all m ∈ N. Over the projective plane, we obtain I(4)< ⊆ I2. Huneke asked whether it was the case that I(3) ⊆ I2. Dumnicki, Szemberg and Tutaj-Gasinska show that if I is the saturated homogeneous radical ideal of the 12 …

Stable Cohomology Of Local Rings And Castelnuovo–Mumford Regularity Of Graded Modules, Luigi Ferraro 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Stable Cohomology Of Local Rings And Castelnuovo–Mumford Regularity Of Graded Modules, Luigi Ferraro

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis consists of two parts:

1) A bimodule structure on the bounded cohomology of a local ring (Chapter 1),

2) Modules of infinite regularity over graded commutative rings (Chapter 2).

Chapter 1 deals with the structure of stable cohomology and bounded cohomology. Stable cohomology is a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebra generalizing Tate cohomology and first defined by Pierre Vogel. It is connected to absolute cohomology and bounded cohomology. We investigate the structure of the bounded cohomology as a graded bimodule. We use the information on the bimodule structure of bounded cohomology to study the stable cohomology algebra as a trivial extension …

On Syntropy & Precognitive Interdiction Based On Wheeler-Feynman’S Absorber Theory, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati 2017 University of New Mexico

On Syntropy & Precognitive Interdiction Based On Wheeler-Feynman’S Absorber Theory, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

It has been known for long time that intuition plays significant role in many professions and human life, including in entrepreneurship, government, and also in detective or law enforcement activities. Women are known to possess better intuitive feelings or “hunch” compared to men. Despite these examples, such a precognitive interdiction is hardly accepted in established science. In this letter, we discuss briefly the advanced solutions of Maxwell equations, and then explore plausible connection between syntropy and precognition.

Smirnov Class For Spaces With The Complete Pick Property, Alexandru Aleman, Michael Hartz, John E. McCarthy, Stefan Richter 2017 Washington University in St Louis

Smirnov Class For Spaces With The Complete Pick Property, Alexandru Aleman, Michael Hartz, John E. Mccarthy, Stefan Richter

Mathematics Faculty Research

We show that every function in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space with a normalized complete Pick kernel is the quotient of a multiplier and a cyclic multiplier. This extends a theorem of Alpay, Bolotnikov and Kaptanoğlu. We explore various consequences of this result regarding zero sets, spaces on compact sets and Gleason parts. In particular, using a construction of Salas, we exhibit a rotationally invariant complete Pick space of analytic functions on the unit disc for which the corona theorem fails.

Solution Of Pdes For First-Order Photobleaching Kinetics Using Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods, Somayyeh Sheikholeslami 2017 University of Southern Mississippi

Solution Of Pdes For First-Order Photobleaching Kinetics Using Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods, Somayyeh Sheikholeslami

Dissertations

We solve the first order reaction-diffusion equations which describe binding-diffusion kinetics using a photobleaching scanning profile of a confocal laser scanning microscope approximated by a Gaussian laser profile. We show how to solve these equations with prebleach steady-state initial conditions using a time-domain method known as a Krylov Subspace Spectral (KSS) method. KSS methods are explicit methods for solving time- dependent variable-coefficient partial differential equations (PDEs). KSS methods are advantageous compared to other methods because of their stability and their superior scalability. These advantages are obtained by applying Gaussian quadrature rules in the spectral domain developed by Golub and Meurant. …

Vertex Weighted Spectral Clustering, Mohammad Masum 2017 East Tennessee State University

Vertex Weighted Spectral Clustering, Mohammad Masum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spectral clustering is often used to partition a data set into a specified number of clusters. Both the unweighted and the vertex-weighted approaches use eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix of a graph. Our focus is on using vertex-weighted methods to refine clustering of observations. An eigenvector corresponding with the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of a graph is called a Fiedler vector. Coefficients of a Fiedler vector are used to partition vertices of a given graph into two clusters. A vertex of a graph is classified as unassociated if the Fiedler coefficient of the vertex is close to …
