Distributive Lattice Models Of The Type B Elementary Weyl Group Symmetric Functions, Katheryn Beck
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
One of the great themes of algebraic combinatorics is the exploration of connections between ordered structures and group actions/representations. This thesis furthers this theme by presenting diamond-colored distributive lattice models of certain poly nomials that are invariant under the action of the type Bn Weyl group. Initially we realize these lattices as diamond-colored lattices of order ideals from certain vertex colored posets. We explore various coordinatizations of these lattices via partition-like elements, tableaux, and binary-type representations called tally diagrams. We also examine algebraic properties of these lattices. In particular, we prove that our type Bn lattices are effective models for …

W1,P Regularity Of Eigenfunctions For The Mixed Problem With Nonhomogeneous Neumann Data, Kohei Miyazaki
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
We consider an eigenvalue problem with a mixed boundary condition, where a second-order differential operator is given in divergence form and satisfies a uniform ellipticity condition. We show that if a function u in the Sobolev space W1,pD is a weak solution to the eigenvalue problem, then u also belongs to W1,pD for some p>2. To do so, we show a reverse Hölder inequality for the gradient of u. The decomposition of the boundary is assumed to be such that we get both Poincaré and Sobolev-type inequalities up to the boundary.

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation for a phase field model of the coupled two-phase free flow and two-phase porous media flow. This model consists of Cahn—Hilliard—Navier—Stokes equations in the free flow region and Cahn—Hilliard—Darcy equations in the porous media region that are coupled by seven interface conditions. The coupled system is decoupled based on the interface conditions and the solution values on the interface from the previous time step. A fully discretized scheme with finite elements for the spatial discretization is developed to solve the decoupled system. In order to deal with the difficulties arising from the …

The Impact Of Data Sovereignty On American Indian Self-Determination: A Framework Proof Of Concept Using Data Science, Joseph Carver Robertson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Data Sovereignty Initiative is a collection of ideas that was designed to create SMART solutions for tribal communities. This concept was to develop a horizontal governance framework to create a strategic act of sovereignty using data science. The core concept of this idea was to present data sovereignty as a way for tribal communities to take ownership of data in order to affect policy and strategic decisions that are data driven in nature. The case studies in this manuscript were developed around statistical theories of spatial statistics, exploratory data analysis, and machine learning. And although these case studies are …

Kashiwara and Saito have a geometric construction of the infinity crystal for any symmetric Kac–Moody algebra. The underlying set consists of the irreducible components of Lusztig’s quiver varieties, which are varieties of nilpotent representations of a pre-projective algebra. We generalize this to symmetrizable Kac–Moody algebras by replacing Lusztig’s preprojective algebra with a more general one due to Dlab and Ringel. In non-symmetric types we are forced to work over non-algebraically-closed fields.

On Spectral Theorem, Muyuan Zhang
Honors Theses
There are many instances where the theory of eigenvalues and eigenvectors has its applications. However, Matrix theory, which usually deals with vector spaces with finite dimensions, also has its constraints. Spectral theory, on the other hand, generalizes the ideas of eigenvalues and eigenvectors and applies them to vector spaces with arbitrary dimensions. In the following chapters, we will learn the basics of spectral theory and in particular, we will focus on one of the most important theorems in spectral theory, namely the spectral theorem. There are many different formulations of the spectral theorem and they convey the "same" idea. In …

Parametric Polynomials For Small Galois Groups, Claire Huang
Honors Theses
Galois theory, named after French mathematician Evariste Galois in 19th-century, is an important part of abstract algebra. It brings together many different branches of mathematics by providing connections among fields, polynomials, and groups.
Specifically, Galois theory allows us to attach a finite field extension with a finite group. We call such a group the Galois group of the finite field extension. A typical way to attain a finite field extension to compute the splitting field of some polynomial. So we can always start with a polynomial and find the finite group associate to the field extension on its splitting field. …

Algebraic Number Theory And Simplest Cubic Fields, Jianing Yang
Honors Theses
The motivation behind this paper lies in understanding the meaning of integrality in general number fields. I present some important definitions and results in algebraic number theory, as well as theorems and their proofs on cyclic cubic fields. In particular, I discuss my understanding of Daniel Shanks' paper on the simplest cubic fields and their class numbers.

Distributive Lattice Models Of The Type C One-Rowed Weyl Group Symmetric Functions, William Atkins
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
We present two families of diamond-colored distributive lattices – one known and one new – that we can show are models of the type C one-rowed Weyl symmetric functions. These lattices are constructed using certain sequences of positive integers that are visualized as filling the boxes of one-rowed partition diagrams. We show how natural orderings of these one-rowed tableaux produce our distributive lattices as sublattices of a more general object, and how a natural coloring of the edges of the associated order diagrams yields a certain diamond-coloring property. We show that each edge-colored lattice possesses a certain structure that is …

Clustered Networks Protect Cooperation Against Catastrophic Collapse, Gwen Spencer
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
Assuming a society of conditional cooperators (or moody conditional cooperators), this computational study proposes a new perspective on the structural advantage of social network clustering. Previous work focused on how clustered structure might encourage initial outbreaks of cooperation or defend against invasion by a few defectors. Instead, we explore the ability of a societal structure to retain cooperative norms in the face of widespread disturbances. Such disturbances may abstractly describe hardships like famine and economic recession, or the random spatial placement of a substantial numbers of pure defectors (or round-1 defectors) among a spatially-structured population of players in a laboratory …

The Fivethirtyeight R Package: ‘Tame Data’ Principles For Introductory Statistics And Data Science Courses, Albert Y. Kim, Chester Ismay, Jennifer Chunn
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
As statistics and data science instructors, we often seek to use data in our courses that are rich, real, realistic, and relevant. To this end we created the fivethirtyeight R package of data and code behind the stories and interactives at the data journalism website FiveThirtyEight.com. After a discussion on the conflicting pedagogical goals of "minimizing prerequisites to research" (Cobb 2015) while at the same time presenting students with a realistic view of data as it exists "in the wild," we articulate how a desired balance between these two goals informed the design of the package. The details behind this …

Students’ Interpretations Of Categorical Data Using Dynamic Graphical Representations, Adam Eide
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Statistical association is an important concept in statistics. An exploratory study examined how students reason about statistical association utilizing graphical representations constructed with CODAP, a dynamic statistical graphing software. Task-based interviews were conducted with three 6th grade students prior to formal instruction. Students’ conceptions of a statistical relationship, proportional reasoning skill level, ability to interpret bivariate categorical graphs (particularly segmented bar graphs and two-way binned plots), and ability to identify association of two categorical variables were all investigated through interview tasks and responses to inquiry. Students were found to have developing proportional reasoning skills and struggled to correctly define and …

Slopes Of Modular Forms And The Ghost Conjecture, Ii, John Bergdall, Robert Pollack
Mathematics Faculty Research and Scholarship
In a previous article we constructed an entire power series over -adic weight space (the ghost series) and conjectured, in the -regular case, that this series encodes the slopes of overconvergent modular forms of any -adic weight. In this paper, we construct abstract ghost series which can be associated to various natural subspaces of overconvergent modular forms. This abstraction allows us to generalize our conjecture to, for example, the case of slopes of overconvergent modular forms with a fixed residual representation that is locally reducible at . Ample numerical evidence is given for this new conjecture. Further, we prove …

Smoothness Of De Nite Unitary Eigenvarieties At Critical Points, John Bergdall
Mathematics Faculty Research and Scholarship
We compute an upper bound for the dimension of the tangent spaces at classical points of certain eigenvarieties associated with definite unitary groups, especially including the so-called critically refined cases. Our bound is given in terms of “critical types” and when our bound is minimized it matches the dimension of the eigenvariety. In those cases, which we explicitly determine, the eigenvariety is necessarily smooth and our proof also shows that the completed local ring on the eigenvariety is naturally a certain universal Galois deformation ring.

Immersed Lagrangian Fillings Of Legendrian Submanifolds Via Generating Families, Samantha Pezzimenti
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
When a Legendrian sub manifold admits a generating family (GF), Sabloff and Traynor proved that there is an isomorphism between the GF-cohomology groups of the Legendrian and the cohomology groups of any GF-compatible embedded Lagrangian filling. In this paper, we show that a similar isomorphism exists for immersed GF-compatible Lagrangian fillings; this imposes restrictions on the minimum number and types of double points for any such filling. We also show that from an immersed GF-cobordisms between Legendrian sub manifolds, there exists a long exact sequence relating the GF-cohomology groups of the two Legendrians and cohomology groups associated with the immersed …

Direct Immunoassays And Their Performance: Theoretical Modelling Of The Effects Of Antibody Orientation And Associated Kinetics, Dana Mackey, Eilis Kelly, Robert Nooney, Richard O'Kennedy

The orientation and activity of antibodies immobilized on solid surfaces are of direct relevance to many immunosensing applications. We therefore investigate a mathematical model which estimates the fraction of antibodies which are available for reaction in a randomly adsorbed sample. Numerical simulations are presented which highlight the separate effects of antibody orientation, accessibility and loss of binding ability on the amount of captured antigen. The assay response can then be expressed as a function of total antibody density and used for optimizing the surface coverage strategy under various conditions.
