"This is Giorgio's Israel last book, which appeared only a few weeks after his untimely death, in September 2015. For many reasons, it can be considered as his intellectual legacy, since it comes back, in a new and organic way, to many of the research topics to which he devoted his life and his many publications, which include several papers in Historia Mathematica. One of these papers, co-authored with M. Menghini, appeared in vol. 25/4, 1998 and was devoted to Poincaré's and Enriques's opposite views on qualitative analysis, which is a theme also dealt with in this book (pp. 117–122)."

Building A Better Risk Prevention Model, Steven Hornyak
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
This presentation chronicles the work of Houston County Schools in developing a risk prevention model built on more than ten years of longitudinal student data. In its second year of implementation, Houston At-Risk Profiles (HARP), has proven effective in identifying those students most in need of support and linking them to interventions and supports that lead to improved outcomes and significantly reduces the risk of failure.

Let R=k[x1,…,xn] be a polynomial ring over a prefect field of positive characteristic. Let I be an equi-dimensional ideal in R and let J be a generic link of I in S=R[uij]c×r. We describe the parameter test submodule of S/J in terms of the test ideal of the pair (R,I) when a reduction of I is a complete intersection or almost complete intersection. As an application, we deduce a criterion for when S/J has F-rational singularities in these cases. We also compare the F-pure threshold of (R,I) and (S,J).

Investigating Secondary Students Beliefs About Mathematical Problem-Solving, Mark Prendergast, Cormac Breen, Aibhin Bray, Fiona Faulkner, Brian Carroll, Dominic Quinn
Articles
Many studies over the past thirty years have highlighted the important role of students’ beliefs for successful problem solving in mathematics. Given the recent emphasis afforded to problem solving on the reformed Irish secondary school mathematics curriculum, the main aim of this study was to identify Irish students’ (n = 975) beliefs about the field. A quantitative measure of these beliefs was attained through the use of the Indiana Mathematical Belief Scale, an existing thirty item (five scale) self-report questionnaire. A statistical analysis of the data revealed that students who were further through their secondary education had a stronger belief …

Policy-Preferred Paths In As-Level Internet Topology Graphs, Mehmet Engin Tozal
Theory & Applications of Graphs
Using Autonomous System (AS) level Internet topology maps to determine accurate AS-level paths is essential for network diagnostics, performance optimization, security enforcement, business policy management and topology-aware application development. One significant drawback that we have observed in many studies is simplifying the AS-level topology map of the Internet to an undirected graph, and then using the hop distance as a means to find the shortest paths between the ASes. A less significant drawback is restricting the shortest paths to only valley-free paths. Both approaches usually inflate the number of paths between ASes; introduce erroneous paths that do not conform to …

This study explores the performance of machine learning algorithms on the classification of fossil teeth in the Family Bovidae. Isolated bovid teeth are typically the most common fossils found in southern Africa and they often constitute the basis for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Taxonomic identification of fossil bovid teeth, however, is often imprecise and subjective. Using modern teeth with known taxons, machine learning algorithms can be trained to classify fossils. Previous work by Brophy et al. [Quantitative morphological analysis of bovid teeth and implications for paleoenvironmental reconstruction of plovers lake, Gauteng Province, South Africa, J. Archaeol. The paper presents Intelligent Control (IC) Interfaces for real time control of mechatronic systems applied to Hardening Process Control (HPC) in order to improvement of the material's mechanical characteristics. Implementation of IC laws in the intelligent real time control interfaces depends on the particular circumstances of the models characteristics used and the exact definition of optimization problem. The results led to the development of the IC interfaces in real time through Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and neural networks (NN) using offline the regression methods.

The faithful state transfer is an important requirement in the construction of classical and quantum computers. While the high-speed transfer is realized by optical-fibre interconnects, its implementation in integrated optical circuits is affected by cross-talk. The cross-talk between densely packed optical waveguides limits the transfer fidelity and distorts the signal in each channel, thus severely impeding the parallel transfer of states such as classical registers, multiple qubits and qudits. Here, we leverage on the suitably engineered cross-talk between waveguides to achieve the parallel transfer on optical chip. Waveguide coupling coefficients are designed to yield commensurate eigenvalues of the array and …

After creating an eye-catching logo for the San Joaquin Math Teachers’ Circle, we decided to spend a session studying it. Our investigation evolved into a journey covering over 2000 years of mathematics history, beginning with a lost work created by Apollonius, moving to a problem posed by a princess, and arriving in the strange world of fractals.

Preliminary studies have established that the process of burning ceramic bricks containing coke-fines as burn-in additives proceeds much faster, with minimal energy expenditure than the traditional method. Also, under these conditions, it is established that the coke fines serve as a reducing agent and accompanies the decomposition of difficult to decompose salts (Na2SO4, CaSO4), which eliminates such negative phenomena as high education. The reducing medium also positively influences the reduction of iron oxides (Fe2+ to Fe+ ) contained in loess-like loam, the chemical ratio of which is Fe+ more active than Fe2+, which predetermines the acceleration of the formation of …

It was established that with the increase of ionic radions of the elements of modifier introduced into the vitreous decreases the viscosity of the molten glass. Also, the dependence of surface tension on the vitreous content of alkaline earth oxides is increased while output modifiers limits up to 20%

Rising sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the Pacific Northwest lead to food resource reductions for surface-feeding seabirds, and have been correlated with several marked behavioral changes. Namely, higher SSTs are associated with increased egg cannibalism and egg-laying synchrony in the colony. We study the long-term effects of climate change on population dynamics and survival by considering a simplified, cross-season model that incorporates both of these behaviors in addition to density-dependent and environmental effects. We show that cannibalism can lead to backward bifurcations and strong Allee effects, allowing the population to survive at lower resource levels than would be possible otherwise.
