Using Social Network Analysis To Examine The Connections Within A Noyce Community’S Facebook Group, Amanda Jensen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the successes of the Rural Enhancement of Mathematics And Science Teachers (REMAST) Scholarship Program at South Dakota State University is the community we have built. This community has been built through a summer conference and a closed Facebook group. As we near the end of our Phase II Noyce funding, we are using social network analysis to examine the connections within the REMAST Facebook group. What we learn in this research project will be useful to other Noyce projects as it is a model for developing a strong professional learning community. In order to determine information about the …

Patient activation measure (PAM) is widely adopted by health care providers to access individual's knowledge, skill, and confidence for managing one's health and healthcare. Patient activation measure (PAM), licensed by Insignia Health, is widely adopted by health care providers to access individual's knowledge, skill, and confidence for managing one's health and healthcare. Multiple studies corroborate the effectiveness of activation measure in predicting most health behaviors, including preventive behaviors, healthy behaviors, self-management behaviors, and health information seeking. However, PAM is heavily dependent on subjective patient-reported data, which are often incomplete. The purpose of this study is to develop an objective statistical …

Quasilinearization And Boundary Value Problems At Resonance For Caputo Fractional Differential Equations, Saleh S. Almuthaybiri, Paul W. Eloe, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer
Mathematics Faculty Publications
The quasilinearization method is applied to a boundary value problem at resonance for a Caputo fractional differential equation. The method of upper and lower solutions is first employed to obtain the uniqueness of solutions of the boundary value problem at resonance. The shift argument is applied to show the existence of solutions. The quasilinearization algorithm is then developed and sequences of approximate solutions are constructed that converge monotonically and quadratically to the unique solution of the boundary value problem at resonance. Two applications are provided to illustrate the main results.

On A Generalization Of A Theorem Of Ibukiyama, Brad Isaacson
Publications and Research
We generalize a theorem of Ibukiyama and express periodic generalized Bernoulli functions by generalized Bernoulli numbers. As a corollary, we obtain formulas expressing these character sums by generalized Bernoulli numbers using only elementary methods from algebra and number theory.

Some Transitivity-Like Concepts In Abelian Groups, Gabor Braun, Brendan Goldsmith, Ketao Gong, Lutz Strungmann
Articles
The classical notions of transitivity and full transitivity in Abelian p-groups have natural extensions to concepts called Krylov and weak transitivity. The interconnections between these four types of transitivity are determined for Abelian p-groups; there is a marked difference in the relationships when the prime p is equal to 2. In the final section the relationship between full and Krylov transitivity is examined in the case of mixed Abelian groups which are p-local in the sense that multiplication by an integer relatively prime to p is an automorphism.

When The Intrinsic Algebraic Entropy Is Not Really Intrinsic, Brendan Goldsmith, Luigi Salce
Articles
The intrinsic algebraic entropy ent(ɸ) of an endomorphism ɸ of an Abelian group G can be computed using fully inert subgroups of ɸ-invariant sections of G, instead of the whole family of ɸ-inert subgroups. For a class of groups containing the groups of finite rank, aswell as those groupswhich are trajectories of finitely generated subgroups, it is proved that only fully inert subgroups of the group itself are needed to comput ent(ɸ). Examples show how the situation may be quite different outside of this class.

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Research has shown that right triangle trigonometry poses a significant learning challenge for high school geometry students. One potential source of this challenge is the tendency for students to experience right triangle trig as an exclusively action-oriented set of strategies (i.e. SOHCAHTOA). This article describes a teaching experiment where students built understanding of right triangle trig using a unique set of manipulatives and direct measurement. Results of the experiment show that the lessons provided opportunities for students to develop their understanding beyond action-oriented strategies.

Modeling Stochastically Intransitive Relationships In Paired Comparison Data, Ryan Patrick Alexander Mcshane
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
If the Warriors beat the Rockets and the Rockets beat the Spurs, does that mean that the Warriors are better than the Spurs? Sophisticated fans would argue that the Warriors are better by the transitive property, but could Spurs fans make a legitimate argument that their team is better despite this chain of evidence?
We first explore the nature of intransitive (rock-scissors-paper) relationships with a graph theoretic approach to the method of paired comparisons framework popularized by Kendall and Smith (1940). Then, we focus on the setting where all pairs of items, teams, players, or objects have been compared to …

Given a presentation for a rack , we define a process which systematically enumerates the elements of . The process is modeled on the systematic enumeration of cosets first given by Todd and Coxeter. This generalizes and improves the diagramming method for -quandles introduced by Winker. We provide pseudocode that is similar to that given by Holt, Eick, and O'Brien for the Todd-Coxeter process. We prove that the process terminates if and only if is finite, in which case, the procedure outputs an operation table for the finite rack. We conclude with an application to knot theory

From Ordered Semigroups To Ordered Hypersemigroups, Niovi Kehayopulu
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In an attempt to show the way we pass from ordered semigroups to ordered hypersemigroups, we examine some well known results of regular and intraregular ordered semigroups in case of ordered hypersemigroups. The corresponding results on hypersemigroups (without order) can also be obtained as application of the results of the present paper. The sets we use in our investigation shows the pointless character of the results.

S. Ramanujan recorded several modular equations and $P$-$Q$ theta function identities in his notebooks and lost notebook without recording the proofs. In this paper, we provide an elementary proof of two modular equations and two $P$-$Q$ theta function identities of level 35, which have been proved by B.C. Berndt using the theory of modular forms.

Construction Of The Holonomy Invariantfoliated Cocycles On The Tangent Bundle Via Formal Integrability, Fatemeh Ahangari
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper is dedicated to exhaustive structural analysis of the holonomy invariant foliated cocycles on the tangent bundle of an arbitrary $(m+n)$-dimensional manifold. For this purpose, by applying Spencer theory of formal integrability, sufficient conditions for the metric associated with the semispray $S$ are determined to extend to a transverse metric for the lifted foliated cocycle on $TM$. Accordingly, this geometric structure converts to a holonomy invariant foliated cocycle on the tangent space, which is totally adapted to the Helmholtz conditions.

$C$-Paracompactness And $C_2$-Paracompactness, Maha Mohammed, Lutfi Kalantan, Hala Alzumi

A topological space $X$ is called $C$-paracompact if there exist a paracompact space $Y$ and a bijective function $f:X\longrightarrow Y$ such that the restriction $f _{A}:A\longrightarrow f(A)$ is a homeomorphism for each compact subspace $A\subseteq X$. A topological space $X$ is called $C_2$-paracompact if there exist a Hausdorff paracompact space $Y$ and a bijective function $f:X\longrightarrow Y$ such that the restriction $f _{A}:A\longrightarrow f(A)$ is a homeomorphism for each compact subspace $A\subseteq X$. We investigate these two properties and produce some examples to illustrate the relationship between them and $C$-normality, minimal Hausdorff, and other properties.

Multiple-Group Adjustment Method In Indirect Adjustment, Changjun Huang, Hongmei Xia, Xike Zhang
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In view of the low accuracy of traditional adjustment, an improved multiple-group adjustment method in indirect adjustment is proposed in this paper. In the process of improved multiple-group adjustment, the first group is first adjusted, and then the adjustment result of the first group and the observation value of the second group are adjusted together, which makes the results in the first-group adjustment meet the overall adjustment results. Finally, the posteriori unit-weight variance value, the coordinated factor matrix of the adjustment result, and the unknown function weight reciprocal are calculated. The experimental results show that the accuracy of multiple-group adjustment …

When Do Quasinilpotents Lie In The Jacobson Radical?, Peng Cao, Xin Wang
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we give some spectral characterizations of the Jacobson radical; that is, we will show that some conditions with $\lambda$-multiplicativity imply that the set of all quasinilpotent elements equals the Jacobson radical. We also give some conditions to make sure the quasinilpotents lie in the Jacobson radical, using the set of elements with singleton spectra.
