Telling Women's Stories: A Resource For College Mathematics Instructors, Sarah Mayes-Tang 2019 University of Toronto

Telling Women's Stories: A Resource For College Mathematics Instructors, Sarah Mayes-Tang

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Stereotypes about mathematicians that conflict with ``traditionally feminine" identities are widely held by people from middle-school-age onwards, and can influence their participation in mathematics and related fields. Simply being exposed to women in mathematics is not enough to change students' perceptions of mathematicians, and may even decrease girls' interest in mathematics. This paper proposes a storytelling strategy to help change students' perceptions of mathematicians. It includes several activities for intentionally incorporating women's stories into the post-secondary classroom and a list of resources for finding existing powerful stories. The diverse stories of women mathematicians, including details of their personal lives and …

Using Hidden Markov Modeling For Biogeographical Ancestry Analysis, Melvin R. Currie 2019 Claremont Colleges

Using Hidden Markov Modeling For Biogeographical Ancestry Analysis, Melvin R. Currie

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This paper describes a methodology for analyzing X-chromosome data to establish biogeographical contributions to the author’s X chromosome. We present an exposition of how Hidden Markov Modeling (HMM) can be used as a black box for ancestry analysis and focus on a set of conditions that are not universal but fairly common. The first condition is that the ancestral populations are drawn from regions that have had very little or no contact with each other since prehistoric times. The second condition is that the number of possible ancestral populations is small. In this analysis, we assume that the ancestral populations …

Choose Your Own Adventure: An Analysis Of Interactive Gamebooks Using Graph Theory, D'Andre Adams, Daniela Beckelhymer, Alison Marr

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

"BEWARE and WARNING! This book is different from other books. You and YOU ALONE are in charge of what happens in this story." This is the captivating introduction to every book in the interactive novel series, Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA). Our project uses the mathematical field of graph theory to analyze forty books from the CYOA book series for ages 9-12. We first began by drawing the digraphs of each book. Then we analyzed these digraphs by collecting structural data such as longest path length (i.e. longest story length) and number of vertices with outdegree zero (i.e. number …

Engaging Crisis: Immersive, Interdisciplinary Learning In Mathematics And Rhetoric, Meredith L. Greer, Stephanie Kelley-Romano

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This paper describes an interdisciplinary activity that crosses over between Mathematics and Rhetoric. The professors who created this activity both sought active-learning opportunities for their students, a sense of realism--even urgency--in what can otherwise be perceived as abstract material, and a meaningful liberal arts experience. Evidence of the power of this experience is seen in the media coverage, both from our college and from the Portland Press Herald newspaper. Both courses described in this paper are at the elective level, taken by majors or minors in their respective disciplines. Students have moderate to extensive backgrounds in their subject areas. However, …

Visual Teaching Of Geometry And The Origins Of 20th Century Abstract Art, Stephen Luecking 2019 DePaul University

Visual Teaching Of Geometry And The Origins Of 20th Century Abstract Art, Stephen Luecking

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

As a group, the artists educated near the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries possessed greater mathematical knowledge than expected of artists today, especially regarding constructive skills in Euclidean geometry. Educational theory of the time stressed such skills for students in general, who needed these to enter the workplace of the time. Mathematics teaching then stressed the use of manipulatives, i.e., visual and interactive aids thought to better fix the student’s acquisition of mathematical skills. This visual training, especially in geometry, significantly affected the early development of abstraction in art. This paper presents examples of this visual …

Practical Modelling Of The Vanilla Option Volatility Smile, Jacob E. Shanley 2019 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Practical Modelling Of The Vanilla Option Volatility Smile, Jacob E. Shanley

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Many discussions on how best to model the standard American Option derivative focus solely upon the volatility smile modelling itself from a mathematical perspective. This thesis instead closely examines both the practical and mathematical implications of processing market data, modelling the volatility smile, and making real-world trading decisions from the results. In particular, it contains an analysis of market data processing algorithms, new volatility smile models, multiple empirically-driven weighting schemes, Gauss-Newton and Levenberg-Marquardt optimization algorithms, and various trading strategies. The top performing combinations found were those that involved the Smile and Twist volatility smile models, Volatility Width Vega Multiplier weighting …

Direct Iterative Algorithm For Solving Optimal Control Problems Using B-Spline Polynomials, Suha Shihab, Maha Delphi 2019 University of Technology, Baghdad, Iraq

Direct Iterative Algorithm For Solving Optimal Control Problems Using B-Spline Polynomials, Suha Shihab, Maha Delphi

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

New technique for achieving an approximate solution to optimal control problems (OCPs) is considered in this paper. The algorithm is based upon B-spline polynomials (BSPs) approximation with state parameterization method. An important property concerning the B-spline functions is first presented then it is utilized to propose a modified restarted technique to reduce the number of unknown parameters with fast convergence. The method is applied through four illustrative examples and is compared with other results.

Purpose of this note is to give an overview on superoscillating sequences and some of their properties. We discuss their persistence in time under Schrödinger equation, we propose various classes of superoscillating functions and we also briefly mention how they can be used to approximate some generalized functions.

Sasaki-Einstein 7-Manifolds, Orlik Polynomials And Homology, Ralph R. Gomez 2019 Swarthmore College

Sasaki-Einstein 7-Manifolds, Orlik Polynomials And Homology, Ralph R. Gomez

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

In this article, we give ten examples of 2-connected seven dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifolds for which the third homology group is completely determined. Using the Boyer-Galicki construction of links over particular Kähler-Einstein orbifolds, we apply a valid case of Orlik’s conjecture to the links so that one is able to explicitly determine the entire third integral homology group. We give ten such new examples, all of which have the third Betti number satisfy 10 ≤ b₃ (Lf) ≤ 20 .

Merge Trees In Discrete Morse Theory, Benjamin Johnson 2019 Ursinus College

Merge Trees In Discrete Morse Theory, Benjamin Johnson

Mathematics Summer Fellows

The field of topological data analysis seeks to use techniques in topology to study large data sets. The hope is that rather than single quantities that summarize the data, such as mean or standard deviation, information about the data can be learned by studying the overall ``shape” of the data. One way to summarize this data is through a merge tree. Merge trees can be thought of as keeping track of certain clusters of data and determining when they merge together. In this paper, we will study merge trees induced by a discrete Morse function on a tree. Under a …

Properties Of A Class Of Mean Dependent On A Parameter, Paul Bracken 2019 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Properties Of A Class Of Mean Dependent On A Parameter, Paul Bracken

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Some properties of a new class of binary symmetric mean Mp(a,b) which depends on two positive numbers a and b, as well as a positive parameter p, are investigated. The logarithmic mean and arithmetic mean are two members of this class. It is shown that, for all values of the parameter p, the set of p-dependent means Mp(a,b) is bounded above by the mean M∞(a,b).

On Optimal Stopping And Impulse Control With Constraint, J. L. Menaldi, M. Robin 2019 Wayne State University

On Optimal Stopping And Impulse Control With Constraint, J. L. Menaldi, M. Robin

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

The optimal stopping and impulse control problems for a Markov-Feller process are considered when the controls are allowed only when a signal arrives. This is referred to as control problems with constraint. In [28, 29, 30], the HJB equation was solved and an optimal control (for the optimal stopping problem, the discounted impulse control problem and the ergodic impulse control problem, respectively) was obtained, under suitable conditions, including a setting on a compact metric state space. In this work, we extend most of the results to the situation where the state space of the Markov process is locally compact.

An Analysis Of The Work Of Passengers Trains On Twozone Sections And Their Alert Automation, N. S. Tokhirov

Central Asian Problems of Modern Science and Education

Company "Uzbekistan railways" has made a great contribution to the safety of passenger traffic. It is expected that passenger trains will have a number of factors affecting the large passenger traffic in the coming days and will be in the future. That is why passenger trains require that the issuance of warnings from workers of the running facilities, electricity, signaling and communications, as well as station attendants at the station by dispatchers, be accurate and error free. This article describes the automation of issuing warnings for trains and trains at two zones
