Universal Rank-Order Transform To Extract Signals From Noisy Data, Glenn Ierley, Alexander Kostinski
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
We introduce an ordinate method for noisy data analysis, based solely on rank information and thus insensitive to outliers. The method is nonparametric and objective, and the required data processing is parsimonious. The main ingredients include a rank-order data matrix and its transform to a stable form, which provide linear trends in excellent agreement with least squares regression, despite the loss of magnitude information. A group symmetry orthogonal decomposition of the 2D rank-order transform for iid (white) noise is further ordered by principal component analysis. This two-step procedure provides a noise “etalon” used to characterize arbitrary stationary stochastic processes. The …

In this article, we classify nonoscillatory solutions of a system of three-dimensional time scale systems. We use the method of considering the sign of components of such solutions. Examples are given to highlight some of our results. Moreover, the existence of such solutions is obtained by Knaster's fixed point theorem.

Winnability Of The Group Labeling Lights Out Game On Complete Bipartite Graphs, Christian J. Miller
McNair Scholars Manuscripts
For an arbitrary graph, we can play Lights Out on it if we assign a number label to each of the vertices of a graph G, representing states of on/off in the original Lights Out game, with the edges connecting those vertices representing the buttons that are adjacent to each other. This project is focused on a slightly modifed version of the game's original rules, with the labels for the vertices coming from the group Zn. It is not always possible to win the game. We will be investigating the values of n for which this group labeling "Lights Out!" …

Modest Automorphisms Of Presburger Arithmetic, Simon Heller
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
It is interesting to consider whether a structure can be expanded by an automorphism so that one obtains a nice description of the expanded structure's first-order properties. In this dissertation, we study some such expansions of models of Presburger arithmetic. Building on some of the work of Harnik (1986) and Llewellyn-Jones (2001), in Chapter 2 we use a back-and-forth construction to obtain two automorphisms of sufficiently saturated models of Presburger arithmetic. These constructions are done first in the quotient of the Presburger structure by the integers (which is a divisible ordered abelian group with some added structure), and then lifted …

The Application Of Synthetic Signals For Ecg Beat Classification, Elliot Morgan Brown
Theses and Dissertations
A brief overview of electrocardiogram (ECG) properties and the characteristics of various cardiac conditions is given. Two different models are used to generate synthetic ECG signals. Domain knowledge is used to create synthetic examples of 16 different heart beat types with these models. Other techniques for synthesizing ECG signals are explored. Various machine learning models with different combinations of real and synthetic data are used to classify individual heart beats. The performance of the different methods and models are compared, and synthetic data is shown to be useful in beat classification.
Algebraic Methods For Proving Geometric Theorems,

Algebraic Methods For Proving Geometric Theorems, Lynn Redman
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Algebraic geometry is the study of systems of polynomial equations in one or more variables. Thinking of polynomials as functions reveals a close connection between affine varieties, which are geometric structures, and ideals, which are algebraic objects. An affine variety is a collection of tuples that represents the solutions to a system of equations. An ideal is a special subset of a ring and is what provides the tools to prove geometric theorems algebraically. In this thesis, we establish that a variety depends on the ideal generated by its defining equations. The ability to change the basis of an ideal …

Shape Equations For Two-Dimensional Manifolds Through A Moving Frame Variational Approach, Paul Bracken
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
A variational approach is given which can be applied to functionals of a general form to determine a corresponding Euler–Lagrange or shape equation. It is the intention to formulate the theory in detail based on a moving frame approach. It is then applied to a functional of a general form which depends on both the mean and Gaussian curvatures as well as the area and volume elements of the manifold. Only the case of a two-dimensional closed manifold is considered. The first variation of the functional is calculated in terms of the variations of the basic variables of the manifold. …

Hermitian Maass Lift For General Level, An Hoa Vu
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
For an imaginary quadratic field $K$ of discriminant $-D$, let $\chi = \chi_K$ be the associated quadratic character. We will show that the space of special hermitian Jacobi forms of level $N$ is isomorphic to the space of plus forms of level $DN$ and nebentypus $\chi$ (the hermitian analogue of Kohnen's plus space) for any integer $N$ prime to $D$. This generalizes the results of Krieg from $N = 1$ to arbitrary level. Combining this isomorphism with the recent work of Berger and Klosin and a modification of Ikeda's construction we prove the existence of a lift from the space …
