Approximation Dynamics, Ethan Akin 2019 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Approximation Dynamics, Ethan Akin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We describe the approximation of a continuous dynamical system on a p.l. manifold or Cantor set by a tractable system. A system is tractable when it has a finite number of chain components and, with respect to a given full background measure, almost every point is generic for one of a finite number of ergodic invariant measures. The approximations we use are non-degenerate simplicial dynamical systems for p.l. manifolds and shift-like dynamical systems for Cantor Sets.

New Foundation In The Sciences: Physics Without Sweeping Infinities Under The Rug, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Robert Neil Boyd 2019 University of New Mexico

New Foundation In The Sciences: Physics Without Sweeping Infinities Under The Rug, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Robert Neil Boyd

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

It is widely known among the Frontiers of physics, that “sweeping under the rug” practice has been quite the norm rather than exception. In other words, the leading paradigms have strong tendency to be hailed as the only game in town. For example, renormalization group theory was hailed as cure in order to solve infinity problem in QED theory. For instance, a quote from Richard Feynman goes as follows: “What the three Nobel Prize winners did, in the words of Feynman, was "to get rid of the infinities in the calculations. The infinities are still there, but now they can …

A Space For Learning: An Analysis Of Research On Active Learning Spaces, Robert Talbert, Anat Mor-Avi 2019 Grand Valley State University

A Space For Learning: An Analysis Of Research On Active Learning Spaces, Robert Talbert, Anat Mor-Avi

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs) are learning spaces specially designed to optimize the practice of active learning and amplify its positive effects in learners from young children through university-level learners. As interest in and adoption of ALCs has increased rapidly over the last decade, the need for grounded research in their effects on learners and schools has grown proportionately. In this paper, we review the peer-reviewed published research on ALCs, dating back to the introduction of “studio” classrooms and the SCALE-UP program up to the present day. We investigate the literature and summarize findings on the effects of ALCs on learning …

Liutex Analysis By Pod And Dmd For Vortex Formations In Boundary Layer Transition, Sita Charkrit 2019 University of Texas at Arlington

Liutex Analysis By Pod And Dmd For Vortex Formations In Boundary Layer Transition, Sita Charkrit

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

Vortices are considered as the building blocks of turbulent flows. To study how one type of vortex becomes another type especially in flow transition is one way to get better understanding about turbulence. In this dissertation, two types of vortex formations, i.e., the hairpin vortex formation and the formation of vortex structure from symmetry to asymmetry, are studied by the direct numerical simulation. According to Liu et al. (2019), Liutex has been proposed as a new physical quantity with scalar, vector and tensor forms. A Liutex vector is defined as a rotation part of fluid motion without shear contamination. The …

Mathematical Modeling Of A Network Of Neurons Regarding Glucose Transport Deficiency Induced Epileptic Seizures, Ariel N. Leslie 2019 University of Texas at Arlington

Mathematical Modeling Of A Network Of Neurons Regarding Glucose Transport Deficiency Induced Epileptic Seizures, Ariel N. Leslie

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

Epilepsy is a complex phenomena of a system of neurons simultaneously firing that are highly intensive and synchronized. Seizures are a common and well known physical feature for all types of epileptic disorders [8]. Epilepsy is known to be traced back to spatial and temporal patterns working in sequence. The rhythms, patterns, and oscillatory dynamics explain the mechanistic nature of neurons especially in absence seizures [37]. An electroencephalogram device (EEG) monitors the electrical activity within the brain using small electrodes, which measures voltage fluctuations on the scalp. Previous models such as Wilson-Cowan (1972) [34], introduced a model showing the dynamics …

Fibonacci And Lucas Identities From Toeplitz–Hessenberg Matrices, Taras Goy, Mark Shattuck 2019 Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University

Fibonacci And Lucas Identities From Toeplitz–Hessenberg Matrices, Taras Goy, Mark Shattuck

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we consider determinants for some families of Toeplitz–Hessenberg matrices having various translates of the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers for the nonzero entries. These determinant formulas may also be rewritten as identities involving sums of products of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers and multinomial coefficients. Combinatorial proofs are provided of several of the determinants which make use of sign-changing involutions and the definition of the determinant as a signed sum over the symmetric group. This leads to a common generalization of the Fibonacci and Lucas determinant formulas in terms of the so-called Gibonacci numbers.

Adjacent Vertex-Distinguishing Proper Edge-Coloring Of Strong Product Of Graphs, S. Anantharaman 2019 Annamalai University

Adjacent Vertex-Distinguishing Proper Edge-Coloring Of Strong Product Of Graphs, S. Anantharaman

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Let G be a finite, simple, undirected and connected graph. The adjacent vertex-distinguishing proper edge-coloring is the minimum number of colors required for a proper edge-coloring of G, in which no two adjacent vertices are incident to edges colored with the same set of colors. The minimum number of colors required for an adjacent vertex-distinguishing proper edgecoloring of G is called the adjacent vertex-distinguishing proper edge-chromatic index. In this paper, I compute adjacent vertex-distinguishing proper edge-chromatic index of strong product of graphs.

Hankel Rhotrices And Constructions Of Maximum Distance Separable Rhotrices Over Finite Fields, P. L. Sharma, Arun Kumar, Shalini Gupta

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Many block ciphers in cryptography use Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) matrices to strengthen the diffusion layer. Rhotrices are represented by coupled matrices. Therefore, use of rhotrices in the cryptographic ciphers doubled the security of the cryptosystem. We define Hankel rhotrix and further construct the maximum distance separable rhotrices over finite fields.

On Vibration Suppression And Trajectory Tracking In Largely Uncertain Torsional System: An Error-Based Adrc Approach, R. Madonski, M. Ramirez-Neria, M. Stankovic, Sally Shao, Zhiqiang Gao, J. Yang, S. Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this work, a practically relevant control problem of compensating harmonic uncertainties is tackled. The problem is formulated and solved here using an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) methodology. A novel, custom ADRC structure is proposed that utilizes an innovative resonant extended state observer (RESO), dedicated to systems subjected to harmonic interferences. In order to make the introduced solution more industry-friendly, the entire observer-centered control topology is additionally restructured into one degree-of-freedom, compact, feedback error-based form (similar to ubiquitous in practice PID controller). Such reorganization enables a straightforward implementation and commission of the proposed technique in wide range of industrial …

On Ordered (P; Q)-Lateral Ideals In Ordered Ternary Semigroups, Mohammad Y. Abbasi, Sabahat A. Khan, Akbar Ali

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we study some useful results of ordered (p; q)-lateral ideals in ordered ternary semigroups. Also, some properties of (p; q)-lateral simple ordered ternary semigroup have been examined. Further, we characterize the relationship between minimal (resp., maximal) ordered (p; q)- lateral ideals and (p; q)-lateral simple ordered ternary semigroups.

The Weak Hyperedge Tenacity Of The Hypercycles, G. H. Shirdel, B. Vaez-Zadeh 2019 University of Qom

The Weak Hyperedge Tenacity Of The Hypercycles, G. H. Shirdel, B. Vaez-Zadeh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Graphs play an important role in our daily life. For example, the urban transport network can be represented by a graph, as the intersections are the vertices and the streets are the edges of the graph. Suppose that some edges of the graph are removed, the question arises how damaged the graph is. There are some criteria for measuring the vulnerability of graph; the tenacity is the best criteria for measuring it. Since the hypergraph generalize the standard graph by defining any edge between multiple vertices instead of only two vertices, the above question is about the hypergraph. When a …

The present article discuss (r; s)-generalized fuzzy e-border, (r; s)-generalized fuzzy e-exterior and (r; s)-generalized fuzzy e-frontier in double fuzzy topologies. Furthermore, some characterizations of generalized double fuzzy e-continuous, generalized double fuzzy e-open, generalized double fuzzy e-closed and generalized double fuzzy e-closure-irresolute functions are studied and investigated. Moreover, the interrelations among the new concepts are discussed with some necessary examples.

Comparing Hecke Coefficients Of Automorphic Representations, Liubomir Chiriac, Andrei Jorza 2019 Portland State University

Comparing Hecke Coefficients Of Automorphic Representations, Liubomir Chiriac, Andrei Jorza

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We prove a number of unconditional statistical results of the Hecke coefficients for unitary cuspidal representations of over number fields. Using partial bounds on the size of the Hecke coefficients, instances of Langlands functoriality, and properties of Rankin-Selberg -functions, we obtain bounds on the set of places where linear combinations of Hecke coefficients are negative. Under a mild functoriality assumption we extend these methods to . As an application, we obtain a result related to a question of Serre about the occurrence of large Hecke eigenvalues of Maass forms. Furthermore, in the cases where the Ramanujan conjecture is satisfied, we …

Hybrid Recommender Systems Via Spectral Learning And A Random Forest, Alyssa Williams 2019 East Tennessee State University

Hybrid Recommender Systems Via Spectral Learning And A Random Forest, Alyssa Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We demonstrate spectral learning can be combined with a random forest classifier to produce a hybrid recommender system capable of incorporating meta information. Spectral learning is supervised learning in which data is in the form of one or more networks. Responses are predicted from features obtained from the eigenvector decomposition of matrix representations of the networks. Spectral learning is based on the highest weight eigenvectors of natural Markov chain representations. A random forest is an ensemble technique for supervised learning whose internal predictive model can be interpreted as a nearest neighbor network. A hybrid recommender can be constructed by first …

Rank Reduction Of String C-Group Representations, Peter A. Brooksbank, Dimitri Leemans 2019 Bucknell University

Rank Reduction Of String C-Group Representations, Peter A. Brooksbank, Dimitri Leemans

Faculty Journal Articles

We show that a rank reduction technique for string C-group representations first used in [Adv. Math. 228 (2018), pp. 3207–3222] for the symmetric groups generalizes to arbitrary settings. The technique permits us, among other things, to prove that orthogonal groups defined on d-dimensional modules over fields of even order greater than 2 possess string C-group representations of all ranks. The broad applicability of the rank reduction technique provides fresh impetus to construct, for suitable families of groups, string C-groups of highest possible rank. It also suggests that the alternating group Alt(11)—the only known group having “rank gaps”—is perhaps more unusual …

Testing Isomorphism Of Graded Algebras, Peter A. Brooksbank, James B. Wilson, Eamonn A. O'Brien 2019 Colorado State University - Fort Collins

Testing Isomorphism Of Graded Algebras, Peter A. Brooksbank, James B. Wilson, Eamonn A. O'Brien

Faculty Journal Articles

We present a new algorithm to decide isomorphism between finite graded algebras. For a broad class of nilpotent Lie algebras, we demonstrate that it runs in time polynomial in the order of the input algebras. We introduce heuristics that often dramatically improve the performance of the algorithm and report on an implementation in Magma.

Period Estimation And Denoising Families Of Nonuniformly Sampled Time Series, William Seguine 2019 East Tennessee State University

Period Estimation And Denoising Families Of Nonuniformly Sampled Time Series, William Seguine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nonuniformly sampled time series are common in astronomy, finance, and other areas of research. Commonly, these time series belong to a family of signals recorded from the same phenomenon. Period estimation and denoising of such data relies on periodograms. In particular, the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and its extension, the Multiband Lomb-Scargle, are at the forefront of time series period estimation. However, these methods are not without laws. This paper explores alternatives to the Lomb-Scargle and Multiband Lomb-Scargle. In particular, this thesis uses regularized least squares and the convolution theorem to introduce a spectral consensus model of a family of nonuniformly sampled …
