A Robust Hyperviscosity Formulation For Stable Rbf-Fd Discretizations Of Advection-Diffusion-Reaction Equations On Manifolds, Varun Shankar, Grady B. Wright, Akil Narayan
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We present a new hyperviscosity formulation for stabilizing radial basis function-finite difference (RBF-FD) discretizations of advection-diffusion-reaction equations on manifolds ⊂ ℝ3 of codimension 1. Our technique involves automatic addition of artificial hyperviscosity to damp out spurious modes in the differentiation matrices corresponding to surface gradients, in the process overcoming a technical limitation of a recently developed Euclidean formulation. Like the Euclidean formulation, the manifold formulation relies on von Neumann stability analysis performed on auxiliary differential operators that mimic the spurious solution growth induced by RBF-FD differentiation matrices. We demonstrate high-order convergence rates on problems involving surface advection and …

Making Real-World Connections In High School Mathematics: The Effectiveness Of A Professional Development Program In Changing Teachers’ Knowledge, Beliefs, And Practices, Thad Ludlam Wilhelm
Wayne State University Dissertations
The study aimed to assess the impact of a professional development workshop at changing secondary mathematics teachers’ knowledge, beliefs, and practices related to real-world applications of algebra. It also addressed gaps in the research literature related to teacher knowledge of how algebra is used by professionals in non-academic settings and their beliefs about the relevance of algebra to their students’ lives. The observational study employed mixed methods. Principal components analysis was conducted on responses to an online questionnaire. Pre-test vs. post-test comparisons were made for workshop participants. Treatment vs. control comparisons were also made using a nationally representative random sample …

Estimation And Clustering In Block Models, Majid Noroozi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Networks with community structure arise in many fields such as social science, biological science, and computer science. Stochastic block models are popular tools to describe such networks. For this reason, in this dissertation which is composed of two parts we explore some stochastic block models and the relationship between them. In the first part of the dissertation, we study the Popularity Adjusted Block Model (PABM) and introduce its sparse case, the Sparse Popularity Adjusted Block Model (SPABM). The SPABM is the only existing block model which allows to set some probabilities of connections to zero. For both the PABM and …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Graph signal processing provides an innovative framework to handle data residing on distributed networks, smart grids, neural networks, social networks and many other irregular domains. By leveraging applied harmonic analysis and graph spectral theory, graph signal processing has been extensively exploited, and many important concepts in classical signal processing have been extended to the graph setting such as graph Fourier transform, graph wavelets and graph filter banks. Similarly, many optimization problems in machine learning, sensor networks, power systems, control theory and signal processing can be modeled using underlying network structure. In modern applications, the size of a network is large, …

Discrete Geometry And Covering Problems, Alexander Hsu
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis explores several problems in discrete geometry, focusing on covering problems. We first go over some well known results, explaining Keith Ball's solution to the symmetric Tarski plank problem, as well as results of Alon and F\"uredi on covering all but vertices of a cube with hyperplanes. The former extensively utilizes techniques from matrix analysis, and the latter applies polynomial method. We state and explore the related problem, asking for the number of parallel hyperplanes required to cover a given discrete set of points in $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ whose entries are bounded, and prove that there exist sets which are ``difficult'' …

Optimal Execution In Cryptocurrency Markets, Ethan Kurz
CMC Senior Theses
The purpose of this paper is to study the Almgren and Chriss model on the optimal execution of large block orders both on the NYSE and in cryptocurrency exchanges. Their model minimizes execution costs, which include linear temporary and permanent price impacts. We focus on how the stock market microstructure differs from a cryptocurrency exchange microstructure and what that means for how the model functions. Once the model and microstructures are explained, we examine how the Almgren-Chriss model functions with stocks from the NYSE, looking at specifically selling a large number of shares. We then investigate how a large "wholesale" …

Heat Kernel Voting With Geometric Invariants, Alexander Harr
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Here we provide a method for comparing geometric objects. Two objects of interest are embedded into an infinite dimensional Hilbert space using their Laplacian eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, truncated to a finite dimensional Euclidean space, where correspondences between the objects are searched for and voted on. To simplify correspondence finding, we propose using several geometric invariants to reduce the necessary computations. This method improves on voting methods by identifying isometric regions including shapes of genus greater than 0 and dimension greater than 3, as well as almost retaining isometry.

The Subconstituent Algebra Of A Hypercube, Jared B. Billet
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
We study the hypercube and the associated subconstituent algebra. Let Q_D denote the hypercube with dimension D and let X denote the vertex set of Q_D. Fix a vertex x in X. We denote by A the adjacency matrix of Q_D and by A* = A*(x) the diagonal matrix with yy-entry equal to D − 2i, where i is the distance between x and y. The subconstitutent algebra T = T(x) of Q_D with respect to x is generated by A and A* . We show that A 2A* − 2AA*A + A*A 2 = 4A* A*2A − 2A*AA* + …

Social influences on classroom learning have a long research tradition and are critical components of self-regulated learning theories. More recently, researchers have explored the social influences of self-regulated learning in cooperative learning contexts. In these settings, co-regulation of learning and socially-shared regulation of learning strategies have been aligned with self-regulated learning theory. However, without specific training or structure, teachers are not likely to explicitly integrate SRL strategies into their teaching. We use case studies to better understand how Zimmerman's theory of self-regulated learning (2008) and Hadwin's conceptual framework of socially-shared regulation of learning (2018) emerge from teachers' support of student-centered …

We designed a sequence of courses for the DataCamp online learning platform that approximates the content of a typical introductory statistics course. We discuss the design and implementation of these courses and illustrate how they can be successfully integrated into a brick-and-mortar class. We reflect on the process of creating content for online consumers, ruminate on the pedagogical considerations we faced, and describe an R package for statistical inference that became a by-product of this development process. We discuss the pros and cons of creating the course sequence and express our view that some aspects were particularly problematic. The issues …

Spectral Analysis Of Complex Dynamical Systems, Casey Lynn Johnson
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The spectrum of any differential equation or a system of differential equations is related to several important properties about the problem and its subsequent solution. So much information is held within the spectrum of a problem that there is an entire field devoted to it; spectral analysis. In this thesis, we perform spectral analysis on two separate complex dynamical systems. The vibrations along a continuous string or a string with beads on it are the governed by the continuous or discrete wave equation. We derive a small-vibrations model for multi-connected continuous strings that lie in a plane. We show that …

Exact Sequences Of Inner Automorphisms Of Tensors, Peter A. Brooksbank
Faculty Journal Articles
We produce a long exact sequence whose terms are unit groups of associative algebras that behave as inner automorphisms of a given tensor. Our sequence generalizes known sequences for associative and non-associative algebras. In a manner similar to those, our sequence facilitates inductive reasoning about, and calculation of the groups of symmetries of a tensor. The new insights these methods afford can be applied to problems ranging from understanding algebraic structures to distinguishing entangled states in particle physics.

In this paper, as an extension of CI-algebras, we discuss the new notions of Neutro-CI-algebras and Anti-CI-algebras. First, some examples are given to show that these definitions are different. We prove that any proper CI-algebra is a Neutro-BE-algebra or Anti-BE-algebra. Also, we show that any NeutroSelf-distributive and AntiCommutative CI-algebras are not BE-algebras.

In a recent paper published in JCMNS in 2017, Francesco Celani, Di Tommaso & Vassalo argued that Maxwell equations rewritten in Clifford algebra are sufficient to describe the electron and also ultra-dense deuterium reaction process proposed by Homlid et al. Apparently, Celani et al. believed that their Maxwell-Clifford equations are an excellent candidate to surpass both Classical Electromagnetic and Zitterbewegung QM. Meanwhile, in a series of papers, Bo Lehnert proposed a novel and revised version of Quantum Electrodynamics (RQED) based on Proca equations. Therefore, in this paper, we gave an outline of Lehnert’s RQED, as an alternative framework to Celani …

Plants and trees grow perpendicular to the plane tangent to the soil surface, at the point of penetration into the soil; in vacuum, the bodies fall perpendicular to the surface of the Earth - in both cases, if the surface is horizontal. Starting from the property of two triangles to be orthological, the two authors have designed this work that seeks to provide an integrative image of elementary geometry by the prism of this "filter". Basically, the property of orthology is the skeleton of the present work, which establishes many connections of some theorems and geometric properties with it. The …

Paradoxism is an international movement in science and culture, founded by Florentin Smarandache in 1980s, based on excessive use of antitheses, oxymoron, contradictions, and paradoxes. During three decades (1980-2020) hundreds of authors from tenth of countries around the globe contributed papers to 15 international paradoxist anthologies.
In 1995, the author extended the paradoxism to a new branch of philosophy called neutrosophy, that gave birth to many scientific branches, such as: neutrosophic logic, neutrosophic set, neutrosophic probability and statistics, neutrosophic algebraic structures and so on with multiple applications in engineering, computer science, administrative work, medical research etc.

Neutrosophic set has been derived from a new branch of philosophy, namely Neutrosophy. Neutrosophic set is capable of dealing with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information. Neutrosophic set approaches are suitable to modeling problems with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information in which human knowledge is necessary, and human evaluation is needed. Neutrosophic set theory firstly proposed in 1998 by Florentin Smarandache, who also developed the concept of single valued neutrosophic set, oriented towards real world scientific and engineering applications. Since then, the single valued neutrosophic set theory has been extensively studied in books and monographs introducing neutrosophic sets and its applications, …

However, a truly multipurpose laser therapy method is very rarely available. Here we introduce a multipurpose laser therapy device in Ukraine, which is capable to take care a multitude of diseases. It is called “Helios”, by one of us (VK). We also give a case where a patient who suffered from Covid-19 has been treated successfully until he is recovered to healthy condition. In the last section we also discuss potential future application of Helios for other fields; i.e. neurology disorders.
