Multicomponent Fokas-Lenells Equations On Hermitian Symmetric Spaces, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov 2021 Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

Multicomponent Fokas-Lenells Equations On Hermitian Symmetric Spaces, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

Multi-component integrable generalizations of the Fokas-Lenells equation, associated with each irreducible Hermitian symmetric space are formulated. Description of the underlying structures associated to the integrability, such as the Lax representation and the bi-Hamiltonian formulation of the equations is provided. Two reductions are considered as well, one of which leads to a nonlocal integrable model. Examples with Hermitian symmetric spaces of all classical series of types A.III, BD.I, C.I and D.III are presented in details, as well as possibilities for further reductions in a general form.

How To Estimate Time Needed For Software Migration, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich 2021 The University of Texas at El Paso

How To Estimate Time Needed For Software Migration, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we need to migrate the existing software package to a new programming language and/or a new operating system. In such a migration, it is important to be able to accurately estimate time needed for this migration: if we underestimate this time, we will lose money and may go bankrupt; if we overestimate this time, other companies who estimate more accuracy will outbid us, and we will lose the contract. The formulas currently used for estimating migration time often lead to underestimation. In this paper, we start with the main ideas behind the existing formulas, and show …

Distributions On An Interval As A Scale-Invariant Combination Of Scale-Invariant Functions: Theoretical Explanation Of Empirical Marchenko-Pastur-Type Distributions, Vladik Kreinovich, Kevin Alvarez, Chon Van Le 2021 The University of Texas at El Paso

Distributions On An Interval As A Scale-Invariant Combination Of Scale-Invariant Functions: Theoretical Explanation Of Empirical Marchenko-Pastur-Type Distributions, Vladik Kreinovich, Kevin Alvarez, Chon Van Le

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we know the lower and upper bounds L and U on possible values of a quantity x. In such situations, the probability distribution of this quantity is also located on the corresponding interval [L, U]. In many such cases, the empirical probability distribution has the form d(x) = const * (x − L)α− * (U − x)α+ * xα. In the particular case α− = α+ = 0.5 and α = −1, we get the Marchenko-Pastur distribution that describes the distribution of the eigenvalues of a random matrix. However, in some cases, the empirical distribution corresponds …

How To Gauge Reliability Of A Binary Classification Result: A Simple Case, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich 2021 The University of Texas at El Paso

How To Gauge Reliability Of A Binary Classification Result: A Simple Case, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we need to make a binary decision based on the available data: whether an incoming email is a spam or not, whether to give a bank loan to a company, etc. In many such situations, we can (and do) use machine learning to come up with such a decision. The problem is that while the results of a machine learning model are not 100% reliable, the existing machine learning algorithms do not allow us to decide how reliable is each result. In this paper, for simple examples, we provide a technique for gauging this reliability.

On Rank-Two And Affine Cluster Algebras, Feiyang Lin 2021 Claremont Colleges

On Rank-Two And Affine Cluster Algebras, Feiyang Lin

HMC Senior Theses

Motivated by existing results about the Kronecker cluster algebra, this thesis is concerned with two families of cluster algebras, which are two different ways of generalizing the Kronecker case: rank-two cluster algebras, and cluster algebras of type An,1. Regarding rank-two cluster algebras, our main result is a conjectural bijection that would prove the equivalence of two combinatorial formulas for cluster variables of rank-two skew-symmetric cluster algebras. We identify a technical result that implies the bijection and make partial progress towards its proof. We then shift gears to study certain power series which arise as limits of ratios of …

On The Evolution Equation For Modelling The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jonathan Blackledge 2021 Technological University Dublin

On The Evolution Equation For Modelling The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jonathan Blackledge

Books/Book chapters

The paper introduces and discusses the evolution equation, and, based exclusively on this equation, considers random walk models for the time series available on the daily confirmed Covid-19 cases for different countries. It is shown that a conventional random walk model is not consistent with the current global pandemic time series data, which exhibits non-ergodic properties. A self-affine random walk field model is investigated, derived from the evolutionary equation for a specified memory function which provides the non-ergodic fields evident in the available Covid-19 data. This is based on using a spectral scaling relationship of the type 1/ωα where ω …

A Van Der Corput Type Lemma For Oscillatory Integrals With Holder Amplitudes And Its Applications, Hussain Al-Qassem, Leslie C. Cheng, Yibiao Pan 2021 Qatar University

A Van Der Corput Type Lemma For Oscillatory Integrals With Holder Amplitudes And Its Applications, Hussain Al-Qassem, Leslie C. Cheng, Yibiao Pan

Mathematics Faculty Research and Scholarship

We prove a decay estimate for oscillatory integrals with \linebreak H\"older amplitudes and polynomial phases. The estimate allows us to answer certain questions concerning the uniform boundedness of oscillatory singular integrals on various spaces.

Ambient Prime Geodesic Theorems On Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Lindsey A. Dever, Djordje Milićević 2021 Bryn Mawr College

Ambient Prime Geodesic Theorems On Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Lindsey A. Dever, Djordje Milićević

Mathematics Faculty Research and Scholarship

We prove prime geodesic theorems counting primitive closed geodesics on a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with length and holonomy in prescribed intervals, which are allowed to shrink. Our results imply effective equidistribution of holonomy and have both the rate of shrinking and the strength of the error term fully symmetric in length and holonomy.

An Analysis Of A Hybrid Steel Bridge, Andrew Iglehart 2021 Western Kentucky University

An Analysis Of A Hybrid Steel Bridge, Andrew Iglehart

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The American Institute of Steel Construction hosts a competition for graduating college seniors each year. The competition is designing and fabricating a scaled steel bridge within certain parameters. Each year the parameters change to allow different seniors to face similar challenges without copying the previous year’s work. Before the outbreak of COVID-19, a bridge was fabricated as per the rules in the 2020, and the same bridge was used for the 2021 competition. With a bridge already fabricated and being used for the competition, a question arose about analyzing the bridge.

This thesis encompasses the entire analysis of the steel …

Towards Tropical Psi Classes, Jawahar Madan

HMC Senior Theses

To help the interested reader get their initial bearings, I present a survey of prerequisite topics for understanding the budding field of tropical Gromov-Witten theory. These include the language and methods of enumerative geometry, an introduction to tropical geometry and its relation to classical geometry, an exposition of toric varieties and their correspondence to polyhedral fans, an intuitive picture of bundles and Euler classes, and finally an introduction to the moduli spaces of n-pointed stable rational curves and their tropical counterparts.

Fractals, Fractional Derivatives, And Newton-Like Methods, Eleanor Byrnes 2021 Claremont Colleges

Fractals, Fractional Derivatives, And Newton-Like Methods, Eleanor Byrnes

HMC Senior Theses

Inspired by the fractals generated by the discretizations of the Continuous Newton Method and the notion of a fractional derivative, we ask what it would mean if such a fractional derivative were to replace the derivatives in Newton's Method. This work, largely experimental in nature, examines these new iterative methods by generating their Julia sets, computing their fractal dimension, and in certain tractable cases examining the behaviors using tools from dynamical systems.

Sequential Monte Carlo Methods In The Nimble And Nimblesmc R Packages, Nicholas Michaud, Perry de Valpine, Daniel Turek, Dao Nguyen 2021 Iowa State University

Sequential Monte Carlo Methods In The Nimble And Nimblesmc R Packages, Nicholas Michaud, Perry De Valpine, Daniel Turek, Dao Nguyen

Faculty and Student Publications

nimble is an R package for constructing algorithms and conducting inference on hierarchical models. The nimble package provides a unique combination of flexible model specification and the ability to program model-generic algorithms. Specifically, the package allows users to code models in the BUGS language, and it allows users to write algorithms that can be applied to any appropriate model. In this paper, we introduce the nimbleSMC R package. nimbleSMC contains algorithms for state-space model analysis using sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) techniques that are built using nimble. We first provide an overview of state-space models and commonly-used SMC algorithms. We then …

Analysis Of Dishman Hills Structure And Hydrogeology, Cole R. McGregor 2021 Eastern Washington University

Analysis Of Dishman Hills Structure And Hydrogeology, Cole R. Mcgregor

Geosciences Student Work

The structural and hydrogeology of Dishman Hills Conservation Area was interpreted to gain a better picture of its interaction with the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie aquifer. The rock in this area is Precambrian Ravalli Group with granitic migmatites. This is due to exhumation causing decompression melting in between the bed layers. Other rocks such as amphibolite, gneiss, schist, quartzite, and phyllite are seen along with granitic dikes (WSDNR). This rock type covers all of the Dishman area and is Precambrian in age. Due to tectonic forces in the Spokane area, fractures have also formed within the Precambrian rock. Water will concentrate …

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Fraction knowledge is known to be a gatekeeper to more advanced mathematical learning. On the basis of the literature on early number learning, a number line mobile application called Catch the Carrot was designed to develop students’ knowledge of whole number and fraction magnitude. This paper aims to describe the design of the Catch the Carrot app and discusses the rationale for using number lines as representational scaffolds for developing children’s understanding of numbers, particularly their estimation and number sense skills. The gamification features of the app, as well as strategies for integration in a classroom are also presented. This …

Using Mobile Technology To Promote Higher-Order Thinking Skills In Elementary Mathematics, Debbie Marie Versoza, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas, Jumela F. Sarmiento, Maria Alva Q. Aberin, Mark Anthony C. Tolentino, Mark L. Loyola 2021 Ateneo de Manila University

Using Mobile Technology To Promote Higher-Order Thinking Skills In Elementary Mathematics, Debbie Marie Versoza, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas, Jumela F. Sarmiento, Maria Alva Q. Aberin, Mark Anthony C. Tolentino, Mark L. Loyola

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The problem of rote-based learning in mathematics is well documented. Mobile technology can provide a potential solution; especially when application (app) design is based on sound pedagogical principles and gamification elements. However; an inventory of available mobile apps for mathematics reveals that many of the available apps are guided by a behaviorist perspective that favors repetition over meaningful learning. This paper reports on the design of mobile mathematics apps that harness gamification techniques to promote higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) even in basic elementary school concepts such as number comparison; and addition and subtraction. The integration of these apps in the …

A Review Of The Fractal Market Hypothesis For Trading And Market Price Prediction, Jonathan Blackledge, Marc Lamphiere 2021 Technological University Dublin

A Review Of The Fractal Market Hypothesis For Trading And Market Price Prediction, Jonathan Blackledge, Marc Lamphiere

Articles

This paper provides a review of the Fractal Market Hypothesis (FMH) focusing on financial times series analysis. In order to put the FMH into a broader perspective, the Random Walk and Efficient Market Hypotheses are considered together with the basic principles of fractal geometry. After exploring the historical developments associated with different financial hypotheses, an overview of the basic mathematical modelling is provided. The principal goal of this paper is to consider the intrinsic scaling properties that are characteristic for each hypothesis. In regard to the FMH, it is explained why a financial time series can be taken to be …
