We derive formulas and algorithms for Kitaev's invariants in the periodic table for topological insulators and superconductors for finite disordered systems on lattices with boundaries. We find that K-theory arises as an obstruction to perturbing approximately compatible observables into compatible observables. We derive formulas in all symmetry classes up to dimension two, and in one symmetry class in dimension three, that can be computed with sparse matrix algorithms. We present algorithms in two symmetry classes in 2D and one in 3D and provide illustrative studies regarding how these algorithms can detect the scaling properties of phase transitions.

A Unified And Preserved Dirichlet Boundary Treatment For The Cell-Centered Finite Volume Discrete Boltzmann Method, Leitao Chen, Laura A. Schaefer
Publications
A new boundary treatment is proposed for the finite volume discrete Boltzmann method (FVDBM) that can be used for accurate simulations of curved boundaries and complicated flow conditions. First, a brief review of different boundary treatments for the general Boltzmann simulations is made in order to primarily explain what type of boundary treatment will be developed in this paper for the cell-centered FVDBM. After that, the new boundary treatment along with the cell-centered FVDBM model is developed in detail. Next, the proposed boundary treatment is applied to a series of numerical tests with a detailed discussion of its qualitative and …

The Symbolic And Mathematical Influence Of Diophantus's Arithmetica, Cyrus Hettle
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Though it was written in Greek in a center of ancient Greek learning, Diophantus's Arithmetica is a curious synthesis of Greek, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian mathematics. It was not only one of the first purely number-theoretic and algebraic texts, but the first to use the blend of rhetorical and symbolic exposition known as syncopated mathematics. The text was influential in the development of Arabic algebra and European number theory and notation, and its development of the theory of indeterminate, or Diophantine, equations inspired modern work in both abstract algebra and computer science. We present, in this article, a selection of problems …

Love Games: A Game-Theory Approach To Compatibility, Kerstin Bever, Julie Rowlett
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
In this note, we present a compatibility test with a rigorous mathematical foundation in game theory. The test must be taken separately by both partners, making it difficult for either partner alone to control the outcome. To introduce basic notions of game theory we investigate a scene from the film "A Beautiful Mind" based on John Nash's life and Nobel-prize-winning theorem. We recall this result and reveal the mathematics behind our test. Readers may customize and modify the test for more accurate results or to evaluate interpersonal relationships in other settings, not only romantic. Finally, we apply Dyson's and Press's …

On The Persistence And Attrition Of Women In Mathematics, Katrina Piatek-Jimenez
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
The purpose of this study was to investigate what motivates women to choose mathematics as an undergraduate major and to further explore what shapes their future career goals, paying particular attention to their undergraduate experiences and their perceptions of the role of gender in these decisions. A series of semi-structured, individual interviews were conducted with twelve undergraduate women mathematics majors who were attending either a large public university or a small liberal arts college. This study found that strong mathematical identities and enjoyment of mathematics heavily influenced their decisions to major in mathematics. At the career selection stage, these women …

Some of the general results in the paper require an additional hypothesis, such as quasitriangularity. Applications to specific types of Hopf algebras are correct, as some of these are quasitriangular, and for those that are not, the Hochschild support variety theory may be applied instead.

A New Resolvent Equation For The S-Functional Calculus, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Jonathan Gantner, Irene Sabadini
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The S-functional calculus is a functional calculus for (n + 1)-tuples of non necessarily commuting operators that can be considered a higher dimensional version of the classical Riesz-Dunford functional calculus for a single operator. In this last calculus, the resolvent equation plays an important role in the proof of several results. Associated with the S-functional calculus there are two resolvent operators: the left S−1 L (s, T ) and the right one S−1 R (s, T ), where s = (s0, s1, . . . , sn) ∈ Rn+1 and T = (T0, T1, . . . , Tn) is …

Clique Topology Reveals Intrinsic Geometric Structure In Neural Correlations, Chad Giusti, Eva Pastalkova, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov

Detecting meaningful structure in neural activity and connectivity data is challenging in the presence of hidden nonlinearities, where traditional eigenvalue-based methods may be misleading. We introduce a novel approach to matrix analysis, called clique topology, that extracts features of the data invariant under nonlinear monotone transformations. These features can be used to detect both random and geometric structure, and depend only on the relative ordering of matrix entries. We then analyzed the activity of pyramidal neurons in rat hippocampus, recorded while the animal was exploring a 2D environment, and confirmed that our method is able to detect geometric organization using …

An Extension Of Herglotz's Theorem To The Quaternions, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, David P. Kimsey, Irene Sabadini, David P. Kimsey

A classical theorem of Herglotz states that a function n↦r(n) from Z into Cs×s is positive definite if and only there exists a Cs×s-valued positive measure dμ on [0,2π] such that r(n)=∫2π0eintdμ(t)for n∈Z. We prove a quaternionic analogue of this result when the function is allowed to have a number of negative squares. A key tool in the argument is the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions, and the representation of such functions which have a positive real part in the unit ball of the quaternions. We study in great detail the case of positive definite functions.

A boundary Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem is posed and solved in the quaternionic setting. Given nonnegative real numbers κ1,…,κN, quaternions p1,…,pN all of modulus 1, so that the 2-spheres determined by each point do not intersect and pu≠1 for u=1,…,N, and quaternions s1,…,sN, we wish to find a slice hyperholomorphic Schur function s so that
limr→1r∈(0,1)s(rpu)=suforu=1,…,N,
and
limr→1r∈(0,1)1−s(rpu)su¯¯¯¯¯1−r≤κu,foru=1,…,N.
Our arguments relies on the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.

On Algebras Which Are Inductive Limits Of Banach Spaces, Daniel Alpay, Guy Salomon
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We introduce algebras which are inductive limits of Banach spaces and carry inequalities which are counterparts of the inequality for the norm in a Banach algebra. We then define an associated Wiener algebra, and prove the corresponding version of the well-known Wiener theorem. Finally, we consider factorization theory in these algebra, and in particular, in the associated Wiener algebra.

This paper aims at clarifying the nature of Frege's system of logic, as presented in the first volume of the Grundgesetze . We undertake a rational reconstruction of this system, by distinguishing its propositional and predicate fragments. This allows us to emphasise the differences and similarities between this system and a modern system of classical second-order logic.

Since the application of Postulate I.2 in the Elements is not uniform, one could wonder in what way should it be applied in Euclid’s …

Professor Kingan’s motivation for writing her free Calculus I textbook was to help address the departments high failure rates in Calculus. Along with another CUNY initiative to offer Calculus workshops in advance of taking the course, Kingan’s concise textbook in Calculus I offers students inside and outside of CUNY an opportunity to prepare for Calculus I at their own pace. She also believes that by providing free access to this material she could help to overcome some of the inequity students experience when Calculus is not offered in their high school. The textbook was written specifically for this pilot project. …

Chebyshev Polynomials And The Frohman-Gelca Formula, Heather M. Russell, Hoel Queffelec
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Using Chebyshev polynomials, C. Frohman and R. Gelca introduced a basis of the Kauffman bracket skein module of the torus. This basis is especially useful because the Jones–Kauffman product can be described via a very simple Product-to-Sum formula. Presented in this work is a diagrammatic proof of this formula, which emphasizes and demystifies the role played by Chebyshev polynomials.
