Welcome into my scientific lab! My lab[oratory] is a virtual facility with noncontrolled conditions in which I mostly perform scientific meditation and chats: a nest of ideas (nidus idearum, in Latin). I called the jottings herein scilogs (truncations of the words scientific, and gr. Λόγος – appealing rather to its original meanings "ground", "opinion", "expectation"), combining the welly of both science and informal (via internet) talks (in English, French, and Romanian). In this second book of scilogs collected from my nest of ideas, one may find new and old questions and solutions, some of them already put at work, others …

An Inner-Outer Factorization In ℓp With Applications To Arma Processes, Raymond Cheng, William T. Ross 2016 University of Richmond

An Inner-Outer Factorization In ℓp With Applications To Arma Processes, Raymond Cheng, William T. Ross

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

The following inner-outer type factorization is obtained for the sequence space ℓp: if the complex sequence F = (F0, F1,F2,...) decays geometrically, then for an p sufficiently close to 2 there exists J and G in ℓp such that F = J * G; J is orthogonal in the Birkhoff-James sense to all of its forward shifts SJ, S2J, S3J, ...; J and F generate the same S-invariant subspace of ℓp; and G is a cyclic vector for S on ℓ …

Concrete Examples Of H(B) Spaces, Emmanuel Fricain, Andreas Hartmann, William T. Ross 2016 University of Richmond

Concrete Examples Of H(B) Spaces, Emmanuel Fricain, Andreas Hartmann, William T. Ross

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper we give an explicit description of de Branges-Rovnyak spaces H(b) when b is of the form qr, where q is a rational outer function in the closed unit ball of H∞ and r is a positive number.

Real Complex Functions, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Javad Mashreghi, William T. Ross 2016 University of Richmond

Real Complex Functions, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Javad Mashreghi, William T. Ross

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We survey a few classes of analytic functions on the disk that have real boundary values almost everywhere on the unit circle. We explore some of their properties, various decompositions, and some connections these functions make to operator theory.

Problems On Mod Structures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral 2016 University of New Mexico

Problems On Mod Structures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors for the first time give several types of problems on MOD structures happens to be an interesting field of study as it makes the whole 4 quadrant plane into a single quadrant plane and the infinite line into a half closed open interval. So study in this direction will certainly yield several interesting results. The law of distributivity is not true. Further the MOD function in general do not obey all the laws of integration or differentiation. Likewise MOD polynomials in general do not satisfy the basic properties of polynomials like its roots etc. Thus over …

Luhn Primes Of Order Ω, Florentin Smarandache, Octavian Cira

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

A prime p, that added to its reverse results in a new prime is called a Luhn prime . The number 229 is a Luhn prime because 229 + 922 = 1151 and 1151 is also a prime . We extend the definition of Luhn primes, present some of the of their properties and ways to determine them .

The Prominence Of Affect In Creativity: Expanding The Conception Of Creativity In Mathematical Problem Solving, Eric L. Mann, Scott A. Chamberlin, Amy K. Graefe 2016 Hope College

The Prominence Of Affect In Creativity: Expanding The Conception Of Creativity In Mathematical Problem Solving, Eric L. Mann, Scott A. Chamberlin, Amy K. Graefe

Faculty Publications

Constructs such as fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration have been accepted as integral components of creativity. In this chapter, the authors discuss affect (Leder GC, Pehkonen E, Törner G (eds), Beliefs: a hidden variable in mathematics education? Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, 2002; McLeod DB, J Res Math Educ 25:637–647, 1994; McLeod DB, Adams VM, Affect and mathematical problem solving: a new perspective. Springer, New York, 1989) as it relates to the production of creative outcomes in mathematical problem solving episodes. The saliency of affect in creativity cannot be underestimated, as problem solvers require an appropriate state of mind in order …

Unequal Edge Inclusion Probabilities In Link-Tracing Network Sampling With Implications For Respondent-Driven Sampling, Miles Q. Ott, Krista J. Gile 2016 Augsburg College

Unequal Edge Inclusion Probabilities In Link-Tracing Network Sampling With Implications For Respondent-Driven Sampling, Miles Q. Ott, Krista J. Gile

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) is a widely adopted linktracing sampling design used to draw valid statistical inference from samples of populations for which there is no available sampling frame. RDS estimators rely upon the assumption that each edge (representing a relationship between two individuals) in the underlying network has an equal probability of being sampled. We show that this assumption is violated in even the simplest cases, and that RDS estimators are sensitive to the violation of this assumption.

Monte Carlo Approx. Methods For Stochastic Optimization, John Fowler 2016 Claremont Colleges

Monte Carlo Approx. Methods For Stochastic Optimization, John Fowler

Pomona Senior Theses

This thesis provides an overview of stochastic optimization (SP) problems and looks at how the Sample Average Approximation (SAA) method is used to solve them. We review several applications of this problem-solving technique that have been published in papers over the last few years. The number and variety of the examples should give an indication of the usefulness of this technique. The examples also provide opportunities to discuss important aspects of SPs and the SAA method including model assumptions, optimality gaps, the use of deterministic methods for finite sample sizes, and the accelerated Benders decomposition algorithm. We also give a …
