In this paper we discuss some notions of analyticity in associative algebras with unit. We also recall some basic tool in algebraic analysis and we use them to study the properties of analytic functions in two algebras of dimension four that played a relevant role in some work of the Italian school, but that have never been fully investigated.

We prove that sets with positive upper Banach density in sufficiently large dimensions contain congruent copies of all sufficiently large dilates of three specific higher-dimensional patterns. These patterns are: 2n vertices of a fixed n-dimensional rectangular box, the same vertices extended with n points completing three-term arithmetic progressions, and the same vertices extended with n points completing three-point corners. Our results provide common generalizations of several Euclidean density theorems from the literature.

The numeracy movement, although largely birthed within the mathematics community, is an outside-the-box endeavor which has always sought to break down or at least transgress traditional disciplinary boundaries. Michael Anthony Lewis’s book is a testament that this effort is succeeding. Lewis is a social worker and sociologist with an impressive resume, author of Economics for Social Workers, co-editor of The Ethics and Economics of the Basic Income Guarantee, and member of the faculty at the Silberman School …

Green's Function For The Schrodinger Equation With A Generalized Point Interaction And Stability Of Superoscillations, Yakir Aharonov, Jussi Behrndt, Fabrizio Colombo, Peter Schlosser
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we study the time dependent Schrödinger equation with all possible self-adjoint singular interactions located at the origin, which include the δ and δ'-potentials as well as boundary conditions of Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin type as particular cases. We derive an explicit representation of the time dependent Green's function and give a mathematical rigorous meaning to the corresponding integral for holomorphic initial conditions, using Fresnel integrals. Superoscillatory functions appear in the context of weak measurements in quantum mechanics and are naturally treated as holomorphic entire functions. As an application of the Green's function we study the stability …

Numerical Integration Through Concavity Analysis, Daniel J. Pietz
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
We introduce a relationship between the concavity of a C2 func- tion and the area bounded by its graph and secant line. We utilize this relationship to develop a method of numerical integration. We then bound the error of the approximation, and compare to known methods, finding an improvement in error bound over methods of comparable computational complexity.

Many properties are known about analytic functions, however the class of harmonic functions which are the sum of an analytic function and the conjugate of an analytic function is less understood. We wish to find conditions such that linear combinations of univalent harmonic functions are univalent. We focus on functions whose image is convex in one direction i.e. each line segment in that direction between points in the image is contained in the image. M. Dorff proved sufficient conditions such that the linear combination of univalent harmonic functions will be univalent on the unit disk. The conditions are: the mappings …

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Within this paper, we will briefly review the history of a collection of number puzzles which take the shape of squares, polygons, and polyhedra in both modular and nonmodular arithmetic. Among other results, we develop construction techniques for solutions of both Modulo and regular Magic Squares. For other polygons in nonmodular arithmetic, specifically of order 3, we present a proof of why there are only four Magic Triangles using linear algebra, disprove the existence of the Magic Tetrahedron in two ways, and utilizing the infamous 3-SUM combinatorics problem we disprove the existence of the Magic Octahedron.

Fractals, Fractional Derivatives, And Newton-Like Methods, Eleanor Byrnes
HMC Senior Theses
Inspired by the fractals generated by the discretizations of the Continuous Newton Method and the notion of a fractional derivative, we ask what it would mean if such a fractional derivative were to replace the derivatives in Newton's Method. This work, largely experimental in nature, examines these new iterative methods by generating their Julia sets, computing their fractal dimension, and in certain tractable cases examining the behaviors using tools from dynamical systems.

Calculus is one of the greatest intellectual achievements of the world and is the main gateway for students that are heading into the fields that will power the economy of the 21st century. However, over 25% of students fail U.S. calculus courses each year and end up changing majors. It is important for educators and researchers to try to improve student success and find ways to increase STEM major retention. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance between students that are in traditional and non-traditional calculus II courses based on their preparation in either traditional or non-traditional …

Exploring Winning Strategies For The Game Of Cycles, Kailee Lin
HMC Senior Theses
This report details my adventures exploring the Game of Cycles in search of winning strategies. I started by studying combinatorial game theory with hopes to use the Sprague-Grundy Theorem and the structure of Nimbers to gain insight for the Game of Cycles. In the second semester, I pivoted to studying specific types of boards instead. In this thesis I show that variations of the mirror-reverse strategy developed by Alvarado et al. in the original Game of Cycles paper can be used to win on additional game boards with special structure, such as lollipops, steering wheel locks, and 3-spoke trees. Additionally …

We show the existence of countably many non-degenerate continua of singular radial solutions to a p-subcritical, p-Laplacian Dirichlet problem on the unit ball in R^N. This result generalizes those for the 2-Laplacian to any value p and extends recent work on the p-Laplacian by considering solutions both radial and singular.

Financial literacy is ideally suited to be integrated into mathematics courses and taught in an interdisciplinary manner. Students learn best and are motivated when tackling real-world meaningful questions. This article shares how elementary mathematics was applied to better understand the debate about raising the minimum wage and the United States National Debt. To serve as a guide for other teachers who wish to incorporate financial literacy into their mathematics courses and take an interdisciplinary approach, this article suggests readings, data sets, and pedagogical practices. Students were engaged and enthusiastic to work on problems that challenged their thinking about financial issues.

Random Matrix Theory: A Combinatorial Proof Of Wigner's Semicircle Law, Vanessa Wolf
Scripps Senior Theses
A combinatorial proof of Wigner’s semicircle law for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) is presented using techniques from free probability. Motivating examples taken from the symmetric Bernoulli ensemble and the GUE show the distribution of eigenvalues of sample n x n matrices approaching Wigner’s semicircle as n get large. The concept of crossing and non-crossing pairings is developed, along with proofs of Wick’s Formula for real and complex Gaussians. It is shown that Wigner’s semicircle distribution has moments given by the Catalan numbers. Wick’s Formula and several additional lemmas (proved in sequence) lead to a "method of moments" proof that …

A Relationship Built To Impact Instruction: Developing And Sustaining Productive Partnerships Between Mathematics Specialists And Principals, Nathan D. Potter, Hannah Adera Rooney, Melody Locher, Debra Kinsey
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
How does the mathematics specialist provide a profound and lasting impact on instruction? We believe that a productive partnership between the principal and specialist, which we will call the principal-specialist relationship, is at the crux of the matter. When the principal-specialist relationship is built upon a foundation of a shared vision, clear roles, communication, and trust, both the teachers and students in the school benefit. We will explore the impact of the principal-specialist relationship on teacher success during the era of distance learning as necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to explore how these ideas come alive in the …

Undergraduate Honors Theses
Annual Lyme disease cases continue to rise in the U.S. making it the most reported vector-borne illness in the country. The pathogen (Borrelia burgdorferi) and primary vector (Ixodes scapularis; blacklegged tick) dynamics of Lyme disease are complicated by the multitude of vertebrate hosts and varying environmental factors, making models an ideal tool for exploring disease dynamics in a time- and cost-effective way. In the current study, LYMESIM 2.0, a mechanistic model, was used to explore the effectiveness of three commonly used tick control methods: habitat-targeted acaricide (spraying), rodent-targeted acaricide (bait boxes), and white-tailed deer targeted acaricide (4-poster …

Diagrams In Intra-Configurational Analysis, Marco Panza, Gianluca Longa
MPP Published Research
In this paper we would like to attempt to shed some light on the way in which diagrams enter into the practice of ancient Greek geometrical analysis. To this end, we will first distinguish two main forms of this practice, i.e., trans-configurational and intra-configurational. We will then argue that, while in the former diagrams enter in the proof essentially in the same way (mutatis mutandis) they enter in canonical synthetic demonstrations, in the latter, they take part in the analytic argument in a specific way, which has no correlation in other aspects of classical geometry. In intra-configurational analysis, diagrams represent …

Greek ancient and early modern geometry necessarily uses diagrams. Among other things, these enter geometrical analysis. The paper distinguishes two sorts of geometrical analysis and shows that in one of them, dubbed “intra-confgurational” analysis, some diagrams necessarily enter as outcomes of a purely material gesture, namely not as result of a codifed constructive procedure, but as result of a free-hand drawing.

In this paper, we apply the concept of neutrosophic numbers to solve a systems of neutrophic linear equations using symbolic computation. Also, we utilize Jupyter, which is supported in Google Colaboratory for performing symbolic computation. The sympy library of Python is used to perform the process of neutrosophic computation. Systems of neutrosophic linear equations are solved through symbolic computation in Python. A case study was developed for the determination of vehicular traffic with indeterminacy. This king of computation opens new ways to deal with indeterminacy in real-world problems.
