Spectral Sequences For Almost Complex Manifolds, Qian Chen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In recent work, two new cohomologies were introduced for almost complex manifolds: the so-called J-cohomology and N-cohomology [CKT17]. For the case of integrable (complex) structures, the former cohomology was already considered in [DGMS75], and the latter agrees with de Rham cohomology. In this dissertation, using ideas from [CW18], we introduce spectral sequences for these two cohomologies, showing the two cohomologies have natural bigradings. We show the spectral sequence for the J-cohomology converges at the second page whenever the almost complex structure is integrable, and explain how both fit in a natural diagram involving Bott-Chern cohomology and the Frolicher spectral sequence. …

Harmonic Equiangular Tight Frames Comprised Of Regular Simplices, Matthew C. Fickus, Courtney A. Schmitt

An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a sequence of unit-norm vectors in a Euclidean space whose coherence achieves equality in the Welch bound, and thus yields an optimal packing in a projective space. A regular simplex is a simple type of ETF in which the number of vectors is one more than the dimension of the underlying space. More sophisticated examples include harmonic ETFs which equate to difference sets in finite abelian groups. Recently, it was shown that some harmonic ETFs are comprised of regular simplices. In this paper, we continue the investigation into these special harmonic ETFs. We begin …

The Direct Scattering Map For The Intermediate Long Wave Equation, Joel Klipfel
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
In the early 1980's, Kodama, Ablowitz and Satsuma, together with Santini, Ablowitz and Fokas, developed the formal inverse scattering theory of the Intermediate Long Wave (ILW) equation and explored its connections with the Benjamin-Ono (BO) and KdV equations. The ILW equation\begin{align*} u_t + \frac{1}{\delta} u_x + 2 u u_x + Tu_{xx} = 0, \end{align*} models the behavior of long internal gravitational waves in stratified fluids of depth $0< \delta < \infty$, where $T$ is a singular operator which depends on the depth $\delta$. In the limit $\delta \to 0$, the ILW reduces to the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation, and in the limit $\delta \to \infty$, the ILW (at least formally) reduces to the Benjamin-Ono (BO) equation.
While the KdV equation is very well understood, a rigorous analysis of inverse scattering for the ILW equation remains to be accomplished. There is currently no rigorous proof that the Inverse Scattering …

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
We discuss the mathematics behind the Pan’s flute. We analyze how the sound is created, the relationship between the notes that the pipes produce, their frequencies and the length of the pipes. We find an equation which models the curve that appears at the bottom of any Pan’s flute due to the different pipe lengths.

Fourier Series Expansion Methods For The Heat And Wave Equations In Two And Three Dimensions On Spherical Domains, Matthew Eller
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Description: The Fourier series expansion method is an invaluable approach to solving partial differential equations, including the heat and wave equations. For homogeneous heat and wave equations, the solution can readily be found through separation of variables and then expansion of the solution in terms of the eigenfunctions. Solutions to inhomogeneous heat and wave equations through Fourier series expansion methods were not readily available in the literature for two- and three-dimensional cases. In my previous paper, I developed an approach for solving inhomogeneous heat and wave equations on cubic domains using Fourier series expansion methods. I shall extend my …

Operator Algebras Generated By Left Invertibles, Derek Desantis
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Operator algebras generated by partial isometries and their adjoints form the basis for some of the most well studied classes of C*-algebras. Representations of such algebras encode the dynamics of orthonormal sets in a Hilbert space. We instigate a research program on concrete operator algebras that model the dynamics of Hilbert space frames.
The primary object of this thesis is the norm-closed operator algebra generated by a left invertible $T$ together with its Moore-Penrose inverse $T^\dagger$. We denote this algebra by $\mathfrac{A}_T$. In the isometric case, $T^\dagger = T^*$ and $\mathfrac{A}_T$ is a representation of the Toeplitz algebra. Of particular interest …

Global Existence And Asymptotic Behaviors For Some Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations., Ismahan Dhaw Binshati
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We study global existence and asymptotic behavior of the solutions for two-fluid compressible isentropic Euler-Maxwell equations by the Fourier transform and energy method. We discuss the case when the pressure for two fluids is not identical and we also add the friction between two fluids. In addition, we discuss the rates of decay of $L^{p}-L^{q}$ norms for a linear system. Moreover, we use the result for $L^{p}-L^{q}$ estimates to prove the decay rates for the nonlinear systems. In addition, we prove existence of heteroclinic orbits for the nonlinear Vlasov and the one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson systems. In the nonlinear Vlasov case with …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, a simple approach is proposed to obtain the best compromise solution of linear multiobjective transportation problem (MOTP). Using this approach, we get unique efficient solution. Because unique efficient extreme point obtained by proposed approach directly leads to compromise solution, which is preferred by decision maker. Also this approach is simple to use and less time consuming. For the application of proposed approach, numerical examples are considered from existing literature and are solved with proposed method.

Mixed Categories Of Sheaves On Toric Varieties, Sean Michael Taylor
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In [BGS96], Beilinson, Ginzburg, and Soergel introduced the notion of mixed categories. This idea often underlies many interesting "Koszul dualities." In this paper, we produce a mixed derived category of constructible complexes (in the sense of [BGS96]) for any toric variety associated to a fan. Furthermore, we show that it comes equipped with a t-structure whose heart is a mixed version of the category of perverse sheaves. In chapters 2 and 3, we provide the necessary background. Chapter 2 concerns the categorical preliminaries, while chapter 3 gives the background geometry. This concerns both some basics of toric varieties as well …

Parametric Polynomials For Small Galois Groups, Claire Huang
Honors Theses
Galois theory, named after French mathematician Evariste Galois in 19th-century, is an important part of abstract algebra. It brings together many different branches of mathematics by providing connections among fields, polynomials, and groups.
Specifically, Galois theory allows us to attach a finite field extension with a finite group. We call such a group the Galois group of the finite field extension. A typical way to attain a finite field extension to compute the splitting field of some polynomial. So we can always start with a polynomial and find the finite group associate to the field extension on its splitting field. …

In PDEs with nontrivial Lie symmetry algebras, the Lie symmetry naturally yield Fourier and Laplace transforms of fundamental solutions. Applying this fact we discuss the semidirect product of the metaplectic group and the Heisenberg group, then induce a representation our group and use it to investigate the invariant solutions of a general differential equation of the form .

The Boundedness Of The Hardy-Littlewood Maximal Function And The Strong Maximal Function On The Space Bmo, Wenhao Zhang
CMC Senior Theses
In this thesis, we present the space BMO, the one-parameter Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, and the two-parameter strong maximal function. We use the John-Nirenberg inequality, the relation between Muckenhoupt weights and BMO, and the Coifman-Rochberg proposition on constructing A1 weights with the Hardy- Littlewood maximal function to show the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function on BMO. The analogous statement for the strong maximal function is not yet understood. We begin our exploration of this problem by discussing an equivalence between the boundedness of the strong maximal function on rectangular BMO and the fact that the strong maximal function maps …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this paper we present a survey of results on the Schrodinger operator with Inverse ¨ Square potential, La= −∆ + a/|x|^2 , a ≥ −( d−2/2 )^2. We briefly discuss the long-time behavior of solutions to the inter-critical focusing NLS with an inverse square potential(proof not provided). Later we present spectral multiplier theorems for the operator. For the case when a ≥ 0, we present the multiplier theorem from Hebisch [12]. The case when 0 > a ≥ −( d−2/2 )^2 was explored in [1], and their proof will be presented for completeness. No improvements on the sharpness …
