Cohen-Macaulay Properties Of Closed Neighborhood Ideals, Jackson Leaman 2023 Clemson University

Cohen-Macaulay Properties Of Closed Neighborhood Ideals, Jackson Leaman

All Theses

This thesis investigates Cohen-Macaulay properties of squarefree monomial ideals, which is an important line of inquiry in the field of combinatorial commutative algebra. A famous example of this is Villareal’s edge ideal [11]: given a finite simple graph G with vertices x1, . . . , xn, the edge ideal of G is generated by all the monomials of the form xixj where xi and xj are adjacent in G. Villareal’s characterization of Cohen-Macaulay edge ideals associated to trees is an often-cited result in the literature. This was extended to chordal and bipartite graphs by Herzog, Hibi, and Zheng in …

Invariants Of 3-Braid And 4-Braid Links, Mark Essa Sukaiti 2023 United Arab Emirates University

Invariants Of 3-Braid And 4-Braid Links, Mark Essa Sukaiti

Theses

In this study, we established a connection between the Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind and the Jones polynomial of generalized weaving knots of type W(3,n,m).
Through our analysis, we demonstrated that the coefficients of the Jones polynomial of weaving knots are essentially the Whitney numbers of Lucas lattices which allowed us to find an explicit formula for the Alexander polynomial of weaving knots of typeW(3,n).
In addition to confirming Fox’s trapezoidal conjecture, we also discussed the zeroes of the Alexander Polynomial of weaving knots of type W(3,n) as they relate to Hoste’s conjecture. In addition, …

Brill--Noether Theory Via K3 Surfaces, Richard Haburcak 2023 Dartmouth College

Brill--Noether Theory Via K3 Surfaces, Richard Haburcak

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Brill--Noether theory studies the different projective embeddings that an algebraic curve admits. For a curve with a given projective embedding, we study the question of what other projective embeddings the curve can admit. Our techniques use curves on K3 surfaces. Lazarsfeld's proof of the Gieseker--Petri theorem solidified the role of K3 surfaces in the Brill--Noether theory of curves. In this thesis, we further the study of the Brill--Noether theory of curves on K3 surfaces.

We prove results concerning lifting line bundles from curves to K3 surfaces. Via an analysis of the stability of Lazarsfeld--Mukai bundles, we deduce a bounded version …

A Graphical User Interface Using Spatiotemporal Interpolation To Determine Fine Particulate Matter Values In The United States, Kelly M. Entrekin 2023 Georgia Southern University

A Graphical User Interface Using Spatiotemporal Interpolation To Determine Fine Particulate Matter Values In The United States, Kelly M. Entrekin

Honors College Theses

Fine particulate matter or PM2.5 can be described as a pollution particle that has a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller. These pollution particle values are measured by monitoring sites installed across the United States throughout the year. While these values are helpful, a lot of areas are not accounted for as scientists are not able to measure all of the United States. Some of these unmeasured regions could be reaching high PM2.5 values over time without being aware of it. These high values can be dangerous by causing or worsening health conditions, such as cardiovascular and lung diseases. Within …

Sl(2,Z) Representations And 2-Semiregular Modular Categories, Samuel Nathan Wilson 2023 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Sl(2,Z) Representations And 2-Semiregular Modular Categories, Samuel Nathan Wilson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We address the open question of which representations of the modular group SL(2,Z) can be realized by a modular category. In order to investigate this problem, we introduce the concept of a symmetrizable representation of SL(2,Z) and show that this property is necessary for the representation to be realized. We then prove that all congruence representations of SL(2,Z) are symmetrizable. The proof involves constructing a symmetric basis, which greatly aids in further calculation. We apply this result to the reconstruction of modular category data from representations, as well as to the classification of semiregular categories, which are defined via an …

Commutators On Fock Spaces, Daniel Alpay, Paula Cerejeiras, Uwe Kähler, Trevor Kling 2023 Chapman University

Commutators On Fock Spaces, Daniel Alpay, Paula Cerejeiras, Uwe Kähler, Trevor Kling

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Given a weighted ℓ2 space with weights associated with an entire function, we consider pairs of weighted shift operators, whose commutators are diagonal operators, when considered as operators over a general Fock space. We establish a calculus for the algebra of these commutators and apply it to the general case of Gelfond–Leontiev derivatives. This general class of operators includes many known examples, such as classic fractional derivatives and Dunkl operators. This allows us to establish a general framework, which goes beyond the classic Weyl–Heisenberg algebra. Concrete examples for its application are provided.

Extending The Radius Of Convergence Of The Drinfeld Module Logarithm, Ethan Clapp 2023 Louisiana Tech University

Extending The Radius Of Convergence Of The Drinfeld Module Logarithm, Ethan Clapp

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

Drinfeld modules are, in essence, a way to create a function field analogue to complex multiplication. With these modules, we can define a logarithm function analogous to the natural logarithm by virtue of a power series. Similarly to how we extend the radius of convergence of the natural logarithm with complex numbers, we can also extend the radius of convergence for these Drinfeld module logarithms. While there are proofs for extending the radius of convergence of the Carlitz module, the simplest form of Drinfeld module, there is no proof for a generalized Drinfeld. In this paper, a method of extending …

Unique Factorization In The Rings Of Integers Of Quadratic Fields: A Method Of Proof, Zachary Warren 2023 Liberty University

Unique Factorization In The Rings Of Integers Of Quadratic Fields: A Method Of Proof, Zachary Warren

Senior Honors Theses

It is a well-known property of the integers, that given any nonzero aZ, where a is not a unit, we are able to write a as a unique product of prime numbers. This is because the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic (FTA) holds in the integers and guarantees (1) that such a factorization exists, and (2) that it is unique. As we look at other domains, however, specifically those of the form O(√D) = {a + bD | a, bZ, D a negative, squarefree integer}, we find that …

The Structure Of Locally Integral Involutive Po-Monoids And Semirings, José Gil-Férez, Peter Jipsen, Siddhartha Lodhia 2023 Chapman University

The Structure Of Locally Integral Involutive Po-Monoids And Semirings, José Gil-Férez, Peter Jipsen, Siddhartha Lodhia

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We show that every locally integral involutive partially ordered monoid (ipo-monoid) A = (A,⩽, ·, 1,∼,−), and in particular every locally integral involutive semiring, decomposes in a unique way into a family {Ap : p ∈ A+} of integral ipo-monoids, which we call its integral components. In the semiring case, the integral components are semirings. Moreover, we show that there is a family of monoid homomorphisms Φ = {φpq : Ap → Aq : p ⩽ q}, indexed on the positive cone (A+,⩽), so that the structure of A can be recovered as a glueing R ΦAp of its integral …

A Stronger Strong Schottky Lemma For Euclidean Buildings, Michael E. Ferguson 2023 CUNY Graduate Center

A Stronger Strong Schottky Lemma For Euclidean Buildings, Michael E. Ferguson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We provide a criterion for two hyperbolic isometries of a Euclidean building to generate a free group of rank two. In particular, we extend the application of a Strong Schottky Lemma to buildings given by Alperin, Farb and Noskov. We then use this extension to obtain an infinite family of matrices that generate a free group of rank two. In doing so, we also introduce an algorithm that terminates in finite time if the lemma is applicable for pairs of certain kinds of matrices acting on the Euclidean building for the special linear group over certain discretely valued fields.

Integrable Systems On Symmetric Spaces From A Quadratic Pencil Of Lax Operators, Rossen Ivanov 2023 Technological University Dublin

Integrable Systems On Symmetric Spaces From A Quadratic Pencil Of Lax Operators, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

The article surveys the recent results on integrable systems arising from quadratic pencil of Lax operator L, with values in a Hermitian symmetric space. The counterpart operator M in the Lax pair defines positive, negative and rational flows. The results are illustrated with examples from the A.III symmetric space. The modeling aspect of the arising higher order nonlinear Schrödinger equations is briefly discussed.

Algebraic Tunnelling, Gaurab Sedhain 2023 Leipzig University

Algebraic Tunnelling, Gaurab Sedhain

2023 REYES Proceedings

We study the quantum phenomenon of tunnelling in the framework of algebraic quantum theory, motivated by the tunnelling aspects of false vacuum decay. We see that resolvent C*-algebra, proposed relatively recently by Buchholz and Grundling rather than Weyl algebra provides an appropriate framework for treating the dynamics of non-free quantum mechanical system as an algebraic automorphism. At the end, we propose to investigate false vacuum decay in algebraic quantum field theoretic setting in terms of the two-point correlation function which gives us the tunneling probability, with the corresponding C*-algebraic construction.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, school campuses worldwide were forced to close, and students had to learn primarily from home. This sudden disruption is estimated to have caused significant learning loss among learners. This paper reports the use of mathematical applications (apps) to bridge the mathematical learning gaps in Grades 1 to 11 in the Philippines after the pandemic, as part of a project funded by a national government agency. The apps include those that strengthen foundational concepts in number and fraction sense in grade school mathematics, develop proving skills in geometry, promote mastery in algebraic and trigonometry through drill and …

A Visual Tour Of Dynamical Systems On Color Space, Jonathan Maltsman 2023 Claremont Colleges

A Visual Tour Of Dynamical Systems On Color Space, Jonathan Maltsman

HMC Senior Theses

We can think of a pixel as a particle in three dimensional space, where its x, y and z coordinates correspond to its level of red, green, and blue, respectively. Just as a particle’s motion is guided by physical rules like gravity, we can construct rules to guide a pixel’s motion through color space. We can develop striking visuals by applying these rules, called dynamical systems, onto images using animation engines. This project explores a number of these systems while exposing the underlying algebraic structure of color space. We also build and demonstrate a Visual DJ circuit board for …

Explorations In Well-Rounded Lattices, Tanis Nielsen 2023 Claremont Colleges

Explorations In Well-Rounded Lattices, Tanis Nielsen

HMC Senior Theses

Lattices are discrete subgroups of Euclidean spaces. Analogously to vector spaces, they can be described as spans of collections of linearly independent vectors, but with integer (instead of real) coefficients. Lattices have many fascinating geometric properties and numerous applications, and lattice theory is a rich and active field of theoretical work. In this thesis, we present an introduction to the theory of Euclidean lattices, along with an overview of some major unsolved problems, such as sphere packing. We then describe several more specialized topics, including prior work on well-rounded ideal lattices and some preliminary results on the study of planar …

An Inquiry Into Lorentzian Polynomials, Tomás Aguilar-Fraga 2023 Harvey Mudd College

An Inquiry Into Lorentzian Polynomials, Tomás Aguilar-Fraga

HMC Senior Theses

In combinatorics, it is often desirable to show that a sequence is unimodal. One method of establishing this is by proving the stronger yet easier-to-prove condition of being log-concave, or even ultra-log-concave. In 2019, Petter Brändén and June Huh introduced the concept of Lorentzian polynomials, an exciting new tool which can help show that ultra-log-concavity holds in specific cases. My thesis investigates these Lorentzian polynomials, asking in which situations they are broadly useful. It covers topics such as matroid theory, discrete convexity, and Mason’s conjecture, a long-standing open problem in matroid theory. In addition, we discuss interesting applications to known …

Long Increasing Subsequences, Hannah Friedman 2023 Claremont Colleges

Long Increasing Subsequences, Hannah Friedman

HMC Senior Theses

In my thesis, I investigate long increasing subsequences of permutations from two angles. Motivated by studying interpretations of the longest increasing subsequence statistic across different representations of permutations, we investigate the relationship between reduced words for permutations and their RSK tableaux in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, we use permutations with long increasing subsequences to construct a basis for the space of -local functions.
