Visual Programming Language With Natural User Interface, Matthew Britton 2019 The University of Akron

Visual Programming Language With Natural User Interface, Matthew Britton

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

One of the fastest-growing fields of interest in computer science, fueled primarily by gaming, is the Natural User Interface (NUI). NUI encompasses technologies which would replace the typical mouse-and-keyboard approach to interaction with computer systems, with the goal of making human-computer interactions more similar to face-to-face interpersonal interactions. This is done by using technologies such as gesture recognition or speech recognition and speech synthesis, which use interpersonal skills we learn and practice on a daily basis. Visual Programming Languages (VPLs) are languages that allow the creation of a program by arranging graphical representations of program behavior, rather than textual program …

Snap Scholar: The User Experience Of Engaging With Academic Research Through A Tappable Stories Medium, Ieva Burk

CMC Senior Theses

With the shift to learn and consume information through our mobile devices, most academic research is still only presented in long-form text. The Stanford Scholar Initiative has explored the segment of content creation and consumption of academic research through video. However, there has been another popular shift in presenting information from various social media platforms and media outlets in the past few years. Snapchat and Instagram have introduced the concept of tappable “Stories” that have gained popularity in the realm of content consumption.

To accelerate the growth of the creation of these research talks, I propose an alternative to video: …

Polyxpress+: Using Social Networking To Enhance The User Experience Of An Interactive Location-Based Storytelling Application, Desiree Creel

Master's Theses

There’s no denying the ever increasing presence of social networking in our daily lives. Every day, people share what they are thinking, doing, and experiencing. But even more so, they check their favorite networks to see what the people in their lives are sharing. Social networking has become so prevalent that most applications incorporate it since it keeps users engaged and beckons them back to the application again and again.

PolyXpress is an interactive, location-based storytelling mobile application that functions as a platform for creating and experiencing stories. Written as a research project at California Polytechnic State University, it allows …

We Have Always Been Virtual: Gilles Deleuze And The Computer-Generated Image, Hugh McCabe 2019 Technological University Dublin

We Have Always Been Virtual: Gilles Deleuze And The Computer-Generated Image, Hugh Mccabe

Conference papers

The use of computer-generated imagery is becoming increasingly ubiquitous across many fields including media, advertising, architecture and art. This represents a fundamental shift within visual culture, as imagery can now be produced routinely by means of rendering algorithms based on spatial representations. We propose that the account of the image provided by Gilles Deleuze in his books on cinema provides a rich philosophical framework for understanding such contemporary imaging practices. By providing a Deleuzian reading of James Kajiya's 1986 rendering equation we argue that there is a tacit ontology of the image underwriting both Deleuze’s work on cinema and current …

Feasible Form Parameter Design Of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry, Thomas L. McCulloch 2018 University of New Orleans

Feasible Form Parameter Design Of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry, Thomas L. Mcculloch

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces a new methodology for robust form parameter design of complex hull form geometry via constraint programming, automatic differentiation, interval arithmetic, and truncated hierarchical B- splines. To date, there has been no clearly stated methodology for assuring consistency of general (equality and inequality) constraints across an entire geometric form parameter ship hull design space. In contrast, the method to be given here can be used to produce guaranteed narrowing of the design space, such that infeasible portions are eliminated. Furthermore, we can guarantee that any set of form parameters generated by our method will be self consistent. It …

Open Source Foundations For Spatial Decision Support Systems, Jochen Albrecht 2018 CUNY Hunter College

Open Source Foundations For Spatial Decision Support Systems, Jochen Albrecht

Publications and Research

Spatial Decision Support Systems (SDSS) were a hot topic in the 1990s, when researchers tried to imbue GIS with additional decision support features. Successful practical developments such as HAZUS or CommunityViz have since been built, based on commercial desktop software and without much heed for theory other than what underlies their process models. Others, like UrbanSim, have been completely overhauled twice but without much external scrutiny. Both the practical and the theoretical foundations of decision support systems have developed considerably over the past 20 years. This article presents an overview of these developments and then looks at what corresponding tools …

Historical Effects Of Electronic Interfaces, G James Mitchell 2018 CUNY New York City College of Technology

Historical Effects Of Electronic Interfaces, G James Mitchell

Publications and Research

Electronic interfaces are a primary tool for most professional and personal communication currently happening. Electronics, like the human mind, are limited by the understanding of executing will, or commands. This can be characterized as “interface limitations” of digital technology. Identifying this bottleneck in technological development has been critical in historical changes to both hardware and software technology. Recent medical research examines a novel user interface to reduce task load. I hypothesize, interface developments that take cues from nonverbal human communication enhance and sustain the significance of those technologies in society. By examining pivotal moments of historical technology we can identify …

The Effect Of Incorporating End-User Customization Into Additive Manufacturing Designs, Jonathan D. Ashley 2018 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

The Effect Of Incorporating End-User Customization Into Additive Manufacturing Designs, Jonathan D. Ashley

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the realm of additive manufacturing there is an increasing trend among makers to create designs that allow for end-users to alter them prior to printing an artifact. Online design repositories have tools that facilitate the creation of such artifacts. There are currently no rules for how to create a good customizable design or a way to measure the degree of customization within a design. This work defines three types of customizations found in additive manufacturing and presents three metrics to measure the degree of customization within designs based on the three types of customization. The goal of this work …

Cross Euclidean-To-Riemannian Metric Learning With Application To Face Recognition From Video, Zhiwu HUANG, R. WANG, S. SHAN, Gool L VAN 2018 Singapore Management University

Cross Euclidean-To-Riemannian Metric Learning With Application To Face Recognition From Video, Zhiwu Huang, R. Wang, S. Shan, Gool L Van

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Riemannian manifolds have been widely employed for video representations in visual classification tasks including video-based face recognition. The success mainly derives from learning a discriminant Riemannian metric which encodes the non-linear geometry of the underlying Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we propose a novel metric learning framework to learn a distance metric across a Euclidean space and a Riemannian manifold to fuse average appearance and pattern variation of faces within one video. The proposed metric learning framework can handle three typical tasks of video-based face recognition: Video-to-Still, Still-to-Video and Video-to-Video settings. To accomplish this new framework, by exploiting typical Riemannian …

The Living Wall Display: Physical Augmentation Of Interactive Content Using An Autonomous Mobile Display, Yuki Onishi, Yoshiki Kudo, Kazuki Takashima, Anthony Tang, Yoshifumi Kitamura

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Living Wall Display displays interactive content on a mobile wall screen that moves in concert with content animation. To augment the interaction experience, the display dynamically changes its position and orientation, responding to the content animation triggered by user interactions. We implement three proof of concept prototypes that represent pseudo force impact of the interactive content using physical screen movement. Pilot studies show that the Living Wall augments content expressiveness, and increases the sense of presence of the screen content.

Vr Safari Park: A Concept-Based World Building Interface Using Blocks And World Tree, Shotaro Ichikawa, Anthony Tang, Kazuki Takashima, Yoshifumi Kitamura

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a concept-based world building approach, realized in a system called VR Safari Park, which allows users to rapidly create and manipulate a world simulation. Conventional world building tools focus on the manipulation and arrangement of entities to set up the simulation, which is time consuming as it requires frequent view and entity manipulations. Our approach focuses on a far simpler mechanic, where users add virtual blocks which represent world entities (e.g. animals, terrain, weather, etc.) to a World Tree, which represents the simulation. In so doing, the World Tree provides a quick overview of the simulation, and users …

Active Matting, Xin YANG, Ke XU, Shaozhe CHEN, Shengfeng HE, Baocai YIN, Rynson LAU 2018 Singapore Management University

Active Matting, Xin Yang, Ke Xu, Shaozhe Chen, Shengfeng He, Baocai Yin, Rynson Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Image matting is an ill-posed problem. It requires a user input trimap or some strokes to obtain an alpha matte of the foreground object. A fine user input is essential to obtain a good result, which is either time consuming or suitable for experienced users who know where to place the strokes. In this paper, we explore the intrinsic relationship between the user input and the matting algorithm to address the problem of where and when the user should provide the input. Our aim is to discover the most informative sequence of regions for user input in order to produce …

Collaborative Robotic Path Planning For Industrial Spraying Operations On Complex Geometries, Steven Brown 2018 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Collaborative Robotic Path Planning For Industrial Spraying Operations On Complex Geometries, Steven Brown

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Implementation of automated robotic solutions for complex tasks currently faces a few major hurdles. For instance, lack of effective sensing and task variability – especially in high-mix/low-volume processes – creates too much uncertainty to reliably hard-code a robotic work cell. Current collaborative frameworks generally focus on integrating the sensing required for a physically collaborative implementation. While this paradigm has proven effective for mitigating uncertainty by mixing human cognitive function and fine motor skills with robotic strength and repeatability, there are many instances where physical interaction is impractical but human reasoning and task knowledge is still needed. The proposed framework consists …

Modeling Movement Decisions In Networks: A Discrete Choice Model Approach, Larry Lin Junjie

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In this dissertation, we address the subject of modeling and simulation of agents and their movement decision in a network environment. We emphasize the development of high quality agent-based simulation models as a prerequisite before utilization of the model as an evaluation tool for various recommender systems and policies. To achieve this, we propose a methodological framework for development of agent-based models, combining approaches such as discrete choice models and data-driven modeling.

The discrete choice model is widely used in the field of transportation, with a distinct utility function (e.g., demand or revenue-driven). Through discrete choice models, the movement decision …
