Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

As the field of computational genomics continues to expand in both potential and application, it is now more imperative than ever to ensure that massive genetic sequencing datasets are properly stored in an accessible manner. This project sought to establish a practical, user-friendly, secure system for a genomics research lab (the Good Lab; thegoodlab.org) at the University of Montana. A MySQL database and connected web application was ruled the best configuration to maximize utility and accessibility for the lab’s researchers. Building the logical framework for the database, creating the server, and sourcing data occurred over several months. The dataset ranged …

Efficient Classification Of Very High Resolution Images, Mohammad I. Nouyed 2024 West Virginia University

Efficient Classification Of Very High Resolution Images, Mohammad I. Nouyed

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent decades, deep learning approaches have shown significant improvement in various image understanding tasks. However, analysis of high-resolution images remains a major challenge. In this work, we address the challenge of very high-resolution histopathological image (VHRHI) classification using a new information-theoretic discriminative patch selection approach. We show results on a high-resolution image dataset, namely, gigapixel whole slide tissue images for cancer tumors. Then we address how to efficiently classify challenging histopathology images, such as gigapixel whole-slide images for cancer diagnostics with image-level annotation. These ``weak labels'' are applied throughout the image but describe tumor regions of variable sizes and …

Towards A Concurrency Platform For Scalable Multi-Axial Real-Time Hybrid Simulation, Marion Sudvarg, Oren Bell, Tyler Martin, Benjamin Standaert, Tao Zhang, Sun Beom Kwon, Chris Gill, Arun Prakash

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-axial real-time hybrid simulation (maRTHS) uses multiple hydraulic actuators to apply loads and deform experimental substructures, enacting both translational and rotational motion. This allows for an increased level of realism in seismic testing. However, this also demands the implementation of multiple-input, multiple-output control strategies with complex nonlinear behaviors. To realize true real-time hybrid simulation at the necessary sub-millisecond timescales, computational platforms will need to support these complexities at scale, while still providing deadline assurance. This paper presents initial work towards supporting (and is influenced by the need for) envisioned larger-scale future experiments based on the current maRTHS benchmark: it discusses …

A New Cache Replacement Policy In Named Data Network Based On Fib Table Information, Mehran Hosseinzadeh, Neda Moghim, Samira Taheri, Nasrin Gholami 2024 University of Isfahan

A New Cache Replacement Policy In Named Data Network Based On Fib Table Information, Mehran Hosseinzadeh, Neda Moghim, Samira Taheri, Nasrin Gholami

VMASC Publications

Named Data Network (NDN) is proposed for the Internet as an information-centric architecture. Content storing in the router’s cache plays a significant role in NDN. When a router’s cache becomes full, a cache replacement policy determines which content should be discarded for the new content storage. This paper proposes a new cache replacement policy called Discard of Fast Retrievable Content (DFRC). In DFRC, the retrieval time of the content is evaluated using the FIB table information, and the content with less retrieval time receives more discard priority. An impact weight is also used to involve both the grade of retrieval …

Managing Inventory With A Database, David Bartlett 2024 The University of Akron

Managing Inventory With A Database, David Bartlett

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Large commercial companies often use warehouses to store and organize their product inventory. However, manually keeping track of inventory through physical means can be a tedious process and is at risk for a variety of potential issues. It is very easy for records to be inaccurate or duplicated, especially if large reorganizations are undertaken, as this can cause issues such as duplicate product ID numbers. Therefore, it was decided that an inventory management system utilizing a SQL database should be created. The system needed to have capabilities including allowing the entry of product information, the ability to search database records …

Wakening Past Concepts Without Past Data: Class-Incremental Learning From Online Placebos, Yaoyao LIU, Yingying LI, Bernt SCHIELE, Qianru SUN 2024 Singapore Management University

Wakening Past Concepts Without Past Data: Class-Incremental Learning From Online Placebos, Yaoyao Liu, Yingying Li, Bernt Schiele, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Not forgetting old class knowledge is a key challenge for class-incremental learning (CIL) when the model continuously adapts to new classes. A common technique to address this is knowledge distillation (KD), which penalizes prediction inconsistencies between old and new models. Such prediction is made with almost new class data, as old class data is extremely scarce due to the strict memory limitation in CIL. In this paper, we take a deep dive into KD losses and find that "using new class data for KD"not only hinders the model adaption (for learning new classes) but also results in low efficiency for …

Effects Of Mindfulness And Emotion Regulation On Aesthetics: A Theoretical Model From Hedonic Perspective Of Processing Fluency, Geng-Bao LIN, Fiona Fui-hoon NAH, Choon Ling SIA 2024 National Taiwan University

Effects Of Mindfulness And Emotion Regulation On Aesthetics: A Theoretical Model From Hedonic Perspective Of Processing Fluency, Geng-Bao Lin, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Choon Ling Sia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Research has shown that processing fluency positively impacts perceived aesthetics, with pleasure mediating the relationship. Considering the important role of pleasure, we propose studying the role of emotion regulation in moderating the mediated relationship from processing fluency to perceived aesthetics. Based on our hypotheses, individuals’ emotion regulation strategies are expected to have moderating effects on the relationship between processing fluency and perceived aesthetics such that cognitive reappraisal positively moderates the relationship from processing fluency to pleasure, and expressive suppression negatively moderates the relationship from pleasure to perceived aesthetics. Trait mindfulness is also expected to influence perceived aesthetics through emotion regulation …

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

We make the case for building a permanent public-use platform for conducting and analyzing immersive interviews on the everyday lives of Americans. The American Voices Project (AVP)—a widely watched experiment with this new platform—provides important early evidence on its promise. The articles in this issue reveal that, although public-use interview datasets obviously cannot meet all research needs, they do provide new opportunities to study small or hidden populations, new or emerging social problems, reactions to ongoing social crises, submerged values and attitudes, and many other aspects of American life. We conclude that a permanent AVP platform would help build an …

The End Of Consent: Data And The Corporate-Consumer Relationship, Faisal Hijjawi 2024 Columbia Law School

The End Of Consent: Data And The Corporate-Consumer Relationship, Faisal Hijjawi

LL.M. Essays & Theses

Consumer data is largely regulated through the notice-and-choice approach in the United States, which relies on consumer consent. The notice-and-choice approach is rooted in the control theory of information privacy. This paper will argue that the control theory is limited due to its reliance on property law, its breadth, as well as it reinforcing the ‘no privacy in public’ concept. Further, the notice-and-choice approach relies on consent being both free and informed. However, consent cannot be considered free due to the lack of choice and the manipulation exerted on the consumer. Also, consent is not informed as the consumer lacks …

Predicting Viral Rumors And Vulnerable Users With Graph-Based Neural Multi-Task Learning For Infodemic Surveillance, Xuan Zhang, Wei Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the age of the infodemic, it is crucial to have tools for effectively monitoring the spread of rampant rumors that can quickly go viral, as well as identifying vulnerable users who may be more susceptible to spreading such misinformation. This proactive approach allows for timely preventive measures to be taken, mitigating the negative impact of false information on society. We propose a novel approach to predict viral rumors and vulnerable users using a unified graph neural network model. We pre-train network-based user embeddings and leverage a cross-attention mechanism between users and posts, together with a community-enhanced vulnerability propagation (CVP) …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The use of social media has made it easy to communicate and share information over the internet. However, it also brings issues such as data privacy leakage, which can be exploited by recipients with malicious intentions to harm the sender. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network that analyzes user’s image for privacy sensitive content and automatically locates sensitive regions for obfuscation. Our approach relies solely on image level annotations and learns to (a) predict an overall privacy score, (b) detect sensitive attributes and (c) demarcate the sensitive regions for obfuscation, in a given input image. We validated …

Railroad Condition Monitoring Using Distributed Acoustic Sensing And Deep Learning Techniques, Md Arifur Rahman 2024 Georgia Southern University

Railroad Condition Monitoring Using Distributed Acoustic Sensing And Deep Learning Techniques, Md Arifur Rahman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Proper condition monitoring has been a major issue among railroad administrations since it might cause catastrophic dilemmas that lead to fatalities or damage to the infrastructure. Although various aspects of train safety have been conducted by scholars, in-motion monitoring detection of defect occurrence, cause, and severity is still a big concern. Hence extensive studies are still required to enhance the accuracy of inspection methods for railroad condition monitoring (CM). Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has been recognized as a promising method because of its sensing capabilities over long distances and for massive structures. As DAS produces large datasets, algorithms for precise …

Short: Can Citations Tell Us About A Paper's Reproducibility? A Case Study Of Machine Learning Papers, Rochana R. Obadage, Sarah M. Rajtmajer, Jian Wu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The iterative character of work in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) and reliance on comparisons against benchmark datasets emphasize the importance of reproducibility in that literature. Yet, resource constraints and inadequate documentation can make running replications particularly challenging. Our work explores the potential of using downstream citation contexts as a signal of reproducibility. We introduce a sentiment analysis framework applied to citation contexts from papers involved in Machine Learning Reproducibility Challenges in order to interpret the positive or negative outcomes of reproduction attempts. Our contributions include training classifiers for reproducibility-related contexts and sentiment analysis, and exploring correlations between …

Retrogressive Document Manipulation Of Us Federal Environmental Websites, Lesley Frew, Michael L. Nelson, Michele C. Weigle 2024 Old Dominion University

Retrogressive Document Manipulation Of Us Federal Environmental Websites, Lesley Frew, Michael L. Nelson, Michele C. Weigle

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Changes made to webpages can affect their retrievability. Often this is done with the intention of increasing the page's search engine ranking to improve overall access to information on the page. The Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI) created a dataset that describes changes on US federal environmental webpages between 2016 and 2020. EDGI noted that many environmental terms were deleted from the pages, but without user data, claims that page retrievability and public information access were lowered are only anecdotal. The Open Resource for Click Analysis in Search (ORCAS) dataset was created during the same time frame, from 2017 …

Causal Disentangled Recommendation Against User Preference Shifts, Wenjie WANG, Xinyu LIN, Liuhui WANG, Fuli FENG, Yunshan MA, Tat‑Seng CHUA 2024 Singapore Management University

Causal Disentangled Recommendation Against User Preference Shifts, Wenjie Wang, Xinyu Lin, Liuhui Wang, Fuli Feng, Yunshan Ma, Tat‑Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recommender systems easily face the issue of user preference shifts. User representations will become outof-date and lead to inappropriate recommendations if user preference has shifted over time. To solve theissue, existing work focuses on learning robust representations or predicting the shifting pattern. Therelacks a comprehensive view to discover the underlying reasons for user preference shifts. To understand thepreference shift, we abstract a causal graph to describe the generation procedure of user interaction sequences.Assuming user preference is stable within a short period, we abstract the interaction sequence as a set ofchronological environments. From the causal graph, we find that the changes …

Quantifying The Competitiveness Of A Dataset In Relation To General Preferences, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Keming Li, Bo Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Typically, a specific market (e.g., of hotels, restaurants, laptops, etc.) is represented as a multi-attribute dataset of the available products. The topic of identifying and shortlisting the products of most interest to a user has been well-explored. In contrast, in this work we focus on the dataset, and aim to assess its competitiveness with regard to different possible preferences. We define measures of competitiveness, and represent them in the form of a heat-map in the domain of preferences. Our work finds application in market analysis and in business development. These applications are further enhanced when the competitiveness heat-map is used …

Question generation (QG) aims to automatically generate fluent and relevant questions, where the two most mainstream directions are generating questions from unstructured contextual texts (CQG), such as news articles, and generating questions from structured factoid texts (FQG), such as knowledge graphs or tables. Existing methods for these two tasks mainly face challenges of limited internal structural information as well as scarce background information, while these two tasks can benefit each other for alleviating these issues. For example, when meeting the entity mention “United Kingdom” in CQG, it can be inferred that it is a country in European continent based on …
