A hundred-eighty Escherichia coli isolates from swine were tested for minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 9 antimicrobials and two heavy metals copper sulfate and zinc chloride. All the E. coli isolates were resistant to at least one antibiotic and 175 (97.2%) isolates were multi-drug resistant. Forty antibiotic resistance patterns were identified, of which the most common pattern was AMP-CHP-CIP-ERY-GEN-STR-SUL-TET-TRI (13.3%). All the isolates formed one large population of susceptibility to copper sulfate and zinc chloride at the concentrations of 6.4-12.8 mM and 3.2-6.4 mM, respectively. Exposure to copper sulfate and zinc chloride at sublethal concentration did not change the susceptibility. …

Blood pressure, urinary protein creatinine (UPC) ratio and oxidative stress (plasma melondialdehyde, urinary melondialdehyde creatinine ratio; UMDA/Cr, the activities of red blood cell catalase; RBC-CAT and red blood cell glutathione) were studied in 42 dogs with urolithiasis and 14 control healthy dogs. The types and location of calculi were defined. The results showed that calculi preferentially found in male and female dogs were calcium oxalate and struvite, respectively. In female, calculi found mostly at urinary bladder while in male, they could be found in either urinary bladder and/or urethra. Dogs with urolithiasis were normotensive. The association between severity of heart disease and serum N-terminal prohormone B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) was determined in dogs presented with respiratory distress. Four groups of dogs were divided into healthy control (n=11), heart failure (n=58), heart disease without heart failure (n=17) and respiratory disease (n=20). Serum NT-proBNP concentrations were measured with an ELISA designed for using in dogs. Dirofilaria antigen tests were detected in dogs with heart disease or heart failure. The Laguna Madre in Mexico is a nursery, growth, and refuge area for shrimp and other wildlife species. These organisms support an important fishery for local industry (third place in Mexico), which may suffer diseases that are few studied. Wild shrimp were randomly collected from two sampling stations (Carrizal and Carbonera) once a month for one year (September 2007 to September 2008) to screen for virus and bacteria. The study was conducted to examine the effect of different parthenogenetic activation (PA) protocols on developmental competence and quality of embryos, and to establish the parthenogenetic embryonic stem (ptES)-like cells in pigs. This study compared the efficacy of enrofloxacin, given immediately or 6 hrs after infection against Escherichia coli or Pasteurella multocida. In the first experiment, thirty, 12-week-old male layer chickens were divided into 3 groups of 10 each. Chickens in group 1, 2 and 3 were infected with E. coli serotype O78 by left thoracic air sac injection. The antimicrobial resistant characteristics both of the cellular and molecular levels of Escherichia coli in broilers were performed by disk diffusion test and polymerase chain reaction technique. Specific primers for the aadA, aac(3)-IV, cmlA, cat1, tetA, sul1, SHV, CITM, ereA and dhfrV gene were used to detect resistance to gentamicin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, cephalothin, ampicillin, erythromycin, sulfonamide+trimetroprim. The 30 samples of E. coli were found to be 100% antimicrobial disk resistant to tetracycline, ampicillin and erythromycin and revealed a 90%, 93.3% and 73.3% resistant gene to tetA, CITM and ereA, respectively. The characteristic of erythrocytes, leukocytes and thrombocytes of a captive Irrawaddy river dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) was described using blood sample collected from caudal vein. By morphological and ultrastructural studies, erythrocytes showed similar size as in humans and contained cytoplasmic electron dense hemoglobin without nucleus. Multilobulated granulocytes composed of cytoplasmic round-to-elongated granulecontaining neutrophils and round-to-oval shaped granule-bearing eosinophils while basophil was very scanty. Monocytes displayed azulophilic granules and vacuolated cytoplasm with pseudopodia. Lymphocytes showed equal amounts of heterochromatin and euchromatin with numerous mitochondria in their cytoplasm. An isolate of Actinobacillus (A.) pleuropneumoniae from porcine tonsil samples was identified as serotype 15-like strain, which was previously isolated in Australia, North America and Japan. It was characterized by biochemical testing performed for Actinobacillus sp. and confirmed as A. pleuropneumoniae by PCR and nucleotide sequencing of 16s rDNA. The isolate contains apxIBD, apxIICA, apxIIIBD, apxIIICA and apxIVA gene. The result of PCR-REA of apxIVA method was identical as A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 15 strain HS143 reference strain. Pemoline is a central nervous system stimulant that has been used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy in humans; its identification in horses could be considered evidence of attempts to influence performance. Two recent pemoline 'positives' in English racehorses led us to review the chemical relationships between tetramisole, levamisole, aminorex and pemoline. Pemoline is a simple oxidation product of aminorex, which has been shown in the United States and elsewhere to be an equine metabolite of levamisole. Based on the clear structural relationships between aminorex and pemoline, we conclude that levamisole can metabolise to pemoline in horses and that …

The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an economically important pathogen of swine and is known to cause abortion and infertility in pregnant sows and respiratory distress in piglets. PRRSV contains a major glycoprotein (GP5) and three minor glycoproteins (GP2a, GP3, and GP4) on the virion envelope, all of which are required for infectious virus production. To study their interactions amongst each other and with a cellular receptor for PRRSV, CD163, I cloned each of the viral glycoproteins and CD163 in various expression vectors. Domestic dogs exhibit an extraordinary degree of morphological diversity. Such breed-to-breed variability applies equally to the canine skull, however little is known about whether this translates to systematic differences in cerebral organization. By looking at the paramedian sagittal magnetic resonance image slice of canine brains across a range of animals with different skull shapes (N = 13), we found that the relative reduction in skull length compared to width (measured by Cephalic Index) was significantly correlated to a progressive ventral pitching of the primary longitudinal brain axis (r = 0.83), as well as with a ventral shift in the position …
