Immunodetection Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Proteins (Igfbps) In The Sera Of Different Animal Species, Romana Masnikosa, Ivona Baricevic, Dragana Lagundzin, Olgica Nedic

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Knowledge regarding the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system and the methods for the detection and quantitation of IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs) is greater for the human species than for other animal species. This is mainly because antibodies specifically raised against nonhuman IGFBPs are rarely commercially available. We aimed to investigate which of the antibodies directed against human IGFBPs could be used for the detection of IGFBPs present in other species. We used commercially available antibodies, raised against human IGFBP-1 through IGFBP-4, in order to recognize the corresponding IGFBPs in the sera of different animal species: human, bovine, equine, porcine, ovine, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A systematic evaluation of the dynamic changes of prolactin (PRL) around the whole cycle of broodiness in domestic fowl has not been performed. We started to investigate the overall changing profile of PRL expression at both protein and mRNA levels from pre- to post-broodiness in Wan-xi White goose, an indigenous breed in East China. The onset of broodiness was recorded, and the plasma PRL concentration and the pituitary PRL mRNA level at 5 stages were measured, in that order, around the first broody cycle. The expression level of pituitary PRL mRNA was highly correlated with the plasma PRL level (r …

The Occipital Area In Medieval Dogs And The Role Of Occipital Dysplasia In Dog Breeding, Maciej Janeczek, Aleksander Chrószcz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

An investigation was carried out on 42 dog skulls from the early medieval period. The skulls were excavated in Wroclaw, Poland, and in Novgorod and Moscow, Russia. Craniometric measurements were taken. On the basis of the basion-ethmoid measurement, the shoulder height was estimated. The foramen magnum height and width were measured and the foramen magnum index was calculated. The foramen magnum was typical in shape, and any occipital dysplasia signs observed were in the skulls. The results of the investigation, in comparison to other investigations of modern breeds and archaeozoological material, suggest that occipital dysplasia is not a pathology but …

Molecular And Serological Evidence For Anaplasma Infection In Yaks, Miling Ma, Zhijie Liu, Guiquan Guan, Youquan Li, Jianxun Luo, Hong Yin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Bovine anaplasmosis caused by Anaplasma marginale is considered to be an important disease in China; large-scale investigations have not been carried out since the 1990s, however, and whether or not yaks can be infected by A. marginale has never been investigated. In this study, 2 yaks were successfully infected by the inoculation of blood infected with A. marginale under experimental conditions. Furthermore, an investigation of 482 field serum samples from yaks using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with the recombinant major surface protein 5 (MSP5) showed that 84.4% of the results were positive. In consideration of previously determined ecological and …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A Maedi-Visna virus (MVV) infection was diagnosed in a 10-month-old lamb from a Turkish flock. The animal suddenly showed nervous signs and died within 2 days. At necropsy, different pulmonary and nervous lesions were observed. A Coenurus cerebralis cyst was also present in the right-brain hemisphere. Severe nonpurulent meningoencephalitis and lymphoproliferative pneumonia were detected by histopathology. MVV proviral DNA was demonstrated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded samples collected from the brain and the lungs. This unusual report in a young animal confirms that not only adult sheep but also lambs can develop MVV disease. The hypothesis …

Stage-Specific Developmental Gene Expression Of Goat Preimplantation Embryos Produced In Vitro, Y. J. Li, H. Ao, G. J. Sun, L. Zhang

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Single preimplantation embryo mRNA differential display was used to study the gene expression of 2-cell,4-cell, and 8-16-cell stage goat embryos produced in vitro, and 16 different stage specific bands in total were screened. In these specific bands, 5 were in 2-cell stage, 4 were in 4-cell stage, and 7 were in 8-16-cell stage, respectively. The sequencing and alignment results suggested that 4 differential expression bands were homologous with human petidylarginine deiminase (PAD), bovine insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP3), bovine NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) 1 alpha subcomplex 4 (NDUFA4), and dog cyclin B3 (CCNB3) genes, respectively. All these 4 genes had …

Association Analysis Of Aquaporin 7 (Aqp7) Gene Variants With Semen Quality And Fertility In Bulls, Tenghe Ma, Jifeng Liu, Ruifeng Zhao, Hao Jiang, Lisheng Dai, Yumin Zhao, Zhihui Zhao, Jiabao Zhang

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Aquaporin 7 (AQP7) gene as a candidate Antifreeze gene was investigated and associated with fresh and frozen semen quality traits in 45 Simmental and Charolais bulls. PCR-SSCP, PCR-RFLP, and sequencing method were employed to detect the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the AQP7 gene. Two mutations, A264G and G371C, were identified. The allele frequencies were A (0.97, 0.96) to B (0.03, 0.04) and C (0.97, 0.91) to D (0.03, 0.09) in Simmental and Charolais bulls, respectively. A264G substitution was significantly associated with acrosome integrity ratio (P < 0.01) and motility (P < 0.05) in frozen semen. Meanwhile, G371C substitution was significantly associated with acrosome integrity ratio (P < 0.05), percentages of viable sperm (P < 0.05), and motility (P < 0.01) in frozen semen. The results prove that AQP7 gene SNPs are useful for marker-assisted selection in early seed selection in the bull industry.

Effects Of Varying Levels Of Protected Fat On Performance Of Shami Goats During Early And Mid Lactation, HOSAM TITI 2011 TÜBİTAK

Effects Of Varying Levels Of Protected Fat On Performance Of Shami Goats During Early And Mid Lactation, Hosam Titi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to determine the responses of early lactating Shami goats to varying amounts of dietary supplementation of Ca salts of fatty acids. Shami goats (n = 75) in their first week of lactation were randomly assigned to 3 isonitrogenous dietary (TMR) treatments containing 0%, 3%, or 5% added Ca salt. The study took 60 days during which the following variables were measured: milk production and composition, body weight, feed intake, serum cholesterol and triglyceride, kids weaning weight, and milk fatty acids. Milk production and energy corrected milk were higher (P < 0.05) at 5% level. Percentages of milk composition were higher (P < 0.05) at 3% with CP% not different from 5%. No differences were observed in yields of different milk components including casein, final body weights, feed intake, or weaning weights of kids. Intake of metabolizable energy was higher (P < 0.05) at 5% level of Ca salts. Differences in milk fatty acids were mainly restricted to unsaturated ones with no effect on the saturated fatty acids. Such results suggest that milk production and content of lactating Shami goat can be changed by a level of 5% of Ca salts.

Ovine scrapie is considered a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation of an abnormal, protease-resistant isoform of PrP. The polymorphisms at codons 136, 154, and 171 are associated with susceptibility to scrapie. In order to detect the existing polymorphisms at the 3 codons we used the real-time PCR technique. The obtained genotypes were confirmed by PCR amplification and sequencing of a 402 bp fragment of exon 3 of the prion gene. Known polymorphisms were detected at codons 136, 154, and 171 and 5 different genotypes were determined. The results showed that all animals were homozygous for A at codon 136 …

Acetic Acid Modulates Induction Of Pulmonary Hypertension In Broiler Chickens: Based On Electrocardiographic Parameters, Hossein Hassanpour, Abdolkarim Zamani Moghadam, Hamed Zarei, Neda Taghavi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

To clarify the effect of acetic acid on the electrocardiographic parameters of pulmonary hypertensive broilers, chicks were reared at high altitude and treated with acetic acid (0.4 and 0.9 g/L) for 45 days. The right ventricle-to-total ventricle ratio was noted as an index of pulmonary hypertension that was significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in the treated groups. S amplitudes were significantly decreased only at 36 days (leads II and III) and 45 days (lead aVF) in many treated groups. There were significant (P < 0.05) reductions of T amplitudes at 28 days (leads aVR and aVL) and 36 days (lead aVL), and significant elevations of QRS (leads II, III, and aVF) and QT intervals (leads II, aVR, aVL, and aVF) at different ages of many treated groups. R amplitudes were significant (P < 0.05) at 28 days (leads aVL and aVF, at both doses of acetic acid), 36 days (leads aVR and aVL, at 0.4 g/L of acetic acid), and 45 days (lead aVR, at both doses of acetic acid). The RR interval also significantly increased at 28 days (leads aVR and aVL) and 45 days (lead aVL). It was concluded that acetic acid modulates induction of ventricular hypertrophy, dilation, and arrhythmia. These effects are detectable in many electrocardiographic parameters.
