The Relationship Between The Educational Experiences Of Senior Dental Students And Their Attitudes Towards Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Alya Sarkhouah 2022 University of the Pacific

The Relationship Between The Educational Experiences Of Senior Dental Students And Their Attitudes Towards Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Alya Sarkhouah

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This research explores final year dental students’ knowledge and attitudes towards the treatment and management of patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) as related to variations in the dental practices in Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) training they received. A quantitative, non-experimental study was conducted, employing survey data collection methods, to address descriptive, comparative, and correlational questions. One cohort, Class 2020, attended extramural rotations in specialized clinics for patients with I/DD and in-person lecture concerning this topic. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its health-related restrictions, another cohort, Class 2021, did not have the same opportunity as rotations …

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal patient level data available in the electronic health record (EHR) allows for the development, implementation, and validations of dental quality measures (eMeasures).

OBJECTIVE: We report the feasibility and validity of implementing two eMeasures. The eMeasures determined the proportion of patients receiving a caries risk assessment (eCRA) and corresponding appropriate risk-based preventative treatments for patients at elevated risk of caries (appropriateness of care [eAoC]) in two academic institutions and one accountable care organization, in the 2019 reporting year.

METHODS: Both eMeasures define the numerator and denominator beginning at the patient level, populations' specifications, and validated the automated queries. For …

Clear Aligner Therapy In The Mixed Dentition: Indications And Practitioner Perspectives, Nicholas M. Lynch 2022 Virginia Commonwealth University

Clear Aligner Therapy In The Mixed Dentition: Indications And Practitioner Perspectives, Nicholas M. Lynch

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: This study evaluated current trends and perspectives among orthodontists regarding clear aligner therapy in the mixed dentition (CAMD), including insights into perceived indications, compliance, oral hygiene, and other factors.

Methods: An original, 22-item survey was mailed to both a randomized, nationally representative sample of practicing orthodontic specialists (n = 800) and to a specific, randomized sub-sample of high-aligner-prescribing orthodontists (n = 200). Questions assessed respondents’ demographic information, experience with clear aligner therapy, and perceived advantages/disadvantages of CAMD compared to fixed appliance therapy (FA). Responses were compared using McNemar’s chi-squared and paired t-tests to assess CAMD versus FA. …

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The esthetic crown lengthening procedure aims to address gingival concerns and achieve harmonious crown proportions. This article explores factors influencing gingival margin position post-surgical intervention, focusing on patients with excessive gingival display. The PICO question investigates gingival changes six months post-surgery. A comprehensive literature search using keywords such as "esthetic crown lengthening" and "gummy smile" identifies relevant articles. Results indicate varied outcomes, emphasizing the importance of individualized approaches. Notably, factors like flap margin suture placement impact tissue rebound. This study underscores the complexity of esthetic crown lengthening, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies to ensure optimal outcomes.

Dental Pulp Stem Cell Heterogeneity: Finding Superior Quality “Needles” In A Dental Pulpal “Haystack” For Regenerative Medicine-Based Applications, Zi Y. Kok, Nadia Y.A. Alaidaroos, Amr Alraies, John S. Colombo, Lindsay C. Davies, Rachel J. Waddington, Alastair J. Sloan, Ryan Moseley

Dental Medicine Faculty Research

Human dental pulp stem/stromal cells (hDPSCs) derived from the permanent secondary dentition are recognised to possess certain advantageous traits, which support their potential use as a viable source of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) for regenerative medicine-based applications. However, the well-established heterogeneous nature of hDPSC subpopulations, coupled with their limited numbers within dental pulp tissues, has impeded our understanding of hDPSC biology and the translation of sufficient quantities of these cells from laboratory research, through successful therapy development and clinical applications. This article reviews our current understanding of hDPSC biology and the evidence underpinning the molecular basis of their heterogeneity, which …

Constructing A Validity Argument For Assessments Of Clinical Competence In Predoctoral Dental Education: A Retrospective Evaluation, Fatema Alkazemi 2022 University of the Pacific

Constructing A Validity Argument For Assessments Of Clinical Competence In Predoctoral Dental Education: A Retrospective Evaluation, Fatema Alkazemi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate and analyze some sources of validity evidence acquired from data (i.e., scores) of comprehensive clinical competency-focused components of the assessment system within the context of one school of dentistry through retrospective analysis of students’ data. Assessments in dental education need some form of evidence of validity to support the proposed interpretations of scores. The approach for evaluating evidence on test scores is presented as an argument, based on theory and logic, according to the four inferences in Kane’s view on validity: scoring, generalization, extrapolation, and implication. Based on our available data sets, …

Tooth Agenesis: Prevalence And Pattern Among Different Ethnicities, Gabrielle Coe 2022 University of Alabama at Birmingham

Tooth Agenesis: Prevalence And Pattern Among Different Ethnicities, Gabrielle Coe

All ETDs from UAB

Tooth agenesis is one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans and is defined as the failure of tooth development or odontogenesis. Prevalence of non-syndromic tooth agenesis has a reported range of 1.6-36.5% and varies by gender, ethnicity, and location. While tooth agenesis is well studied, information within ethnic groups requires further investigation. In this study, dental records of 3033 patients of the UAB School of Dentistry were evaluated to identify and categorize missing teeth by ethnicity and gender. Data analysis was conducted with Chi-square or Fisher’s exact test, with a two-sided significance level of 0.05. An overall prevalence …

Aims. The primary aim of this randomized, blinded, controlled clinical trial was to compare clinical and patient-centered outcomes obtained following soft tissue grafting utilizing the Side Access Mucosal Releasing Incision (SAMRI) or Sulcular Tunnel Access (STA) procedures with acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and coronal flap advancement to treat Miller Class I and II recession defects on single rooted teeth. Methods. Five patients and eight recession defect sites with Miller Class I or II gingival recession and £ 2mm of keratinized tissue at each site were randomly divided into two groups (A: SAMRI, B: STA) and were treated and evaluated for …
