Dental Medicine Faculty Publications
Purpose: To examine the microscopic surface features, chemical composition, and thermodynamic profile of seven endodontic sealers (AH Plus, Adseal, MTA-Fillapex, RoekoSeal, GuttaFlow 2, GuttaFlow BioSeal, and EndoRez) exposed to high-temperature changes using an endodontic obturation device.
Methods: The thermal properties were examined using scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Then, six disc-shaped specimens of each sealer were prepared and divided into two groups – a room temperature group and a heat exposure group – for analysis of surface and chemical changes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
Results: DSC analysis showed that AH Plus had …

Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and Hispanic and low-income US children have a higher prevalence of untreated caries than their higher-income and non-Hispanic White (NHW) counterparts. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many dental offices and school sealant programs closed beginning March 2020. We examine the effect of reduced access to restorative care and sealants on the oral health of children from low-income households overall and by race/ethnicity and how increased sealant delivery in September 2022 could mitigate these effects. We used Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation to model COVID-19’s impact on first permanent molar (1M) caries incidence and loss in quality of …

Comprehensive Pregnancy Dental Benefits Improved Dental Coverage And Increased Dental Care Utilization Among Medicaid-Enrolled Pregnant Women In Virginia, Shillpa Naavaal, David W. Harless
Dental Public Health and Policy Publications
Objectives: To evaluate the changes in dental insurance and utilization among pregnant women before and after the pregnancy Medicaid dental benefit policy implementation in 2015 in Virginia.
Methods: We used pooled cross-sectional data from six cycles of the Virginia Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System on women aged ≥21 years. Using logistic regression models and a difference-in-difference design, we compared the effects of policy implementation on dental insurance and utilization between pre-policy (2013-2014) and post-policy period (2016-2019) among women enrolled in Medicaid (treatment, N = 1,105) vs. those with private insurance (control, N = 2,575). A p-value of 0.05 was …

Objectives:
To examine oral cancer screening rates and associated factors among adults with periodontal disease (PD). We hypothesized that adults with severe PD will be less likely to report receipt of any type of oral cancer screening than adults with no PD.
Materials and Methods:
We used 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data on adults ≥ 30 years. PD status was classified as no PD, mild/moderate PD, and severe PD. Survey-adjusted logistic regression analysis was used to examine the model adjusted risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the outcome of not receiving intraoral, extraoral …

Relationship Between Diabetic Status And Levels Of Salivary Statherin, Nikhil Malhan, David Ojcius, Scott Davis
Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses
Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the varying levels of salivary statherin production in patients with varying levels of risk for diabetes. The goal is to identify a causal relationship and thus, statherin could be used as a preliminary biomarker for identifying patients with diabetes. Materials and Methods: Saliva from 47 participants were collected in order to quantify the levels of statherin production via western blot analysis. Participants were also asked to fill out self-reported questionnaires regarding risk factors for type 2 diabetes. The questionnaire consisted of 7 questions regarding age, sex, history of diabetes, hypertension, level …

The Impact Of Sickle Cell Disease On Gingival Bleeding And Oral Health Of Adults, Natalie Roa
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Oral health may serve as an indicator of overall systemic health, with each disease or condition manifesting differently in the oral cavity. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder in which sickled red blood cells cause blood vessel occlusion and potentially bleeding in specific sites (e.g., gastrointestinal and intracranial bleeding). With SCD being one of the most common hereditary diseases in the world, it is essential to understand the disease and improve awareness to better treat this population. While studies have been done to evaluate the oral health of persons with SCD, few have explored the occurrence of gingival …

An In Vitro Evaluation Of The Kontrolflex Accufile Hand File, Mia Tittle
Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses
The aims of this study were to determine the efficacy of the KontrolFlexTM AccufileTM compared to the READY•STEEL™ Flexofile® using an electronic apex locator and to evaluate the instrument’s design via scanning electron microscopy. Actual canal lengths of thirty extracted teeth were determined under magnification. An alginate model was used to determine experimental canal lengths with the Root ZX II apex locator and size #10 Accufiles and Flexofiles. Differences between actual lengths and experimental lengths were compared with Student’s t test. The average experimental lengths were short of the actual length by -0.10 mm (±0.34) and -0.12 mm (±0.16) for …

Alteration In Facial Contour Associated With Aging: Case Report, Bohan Lin Ba, Dds, Louis Mandel Dds
The New York State Dental Journal
The authors examined a 73-year-old female because of a chief complaint of bilateral swellings of the parotid gland. After detailed questioning, the authors determined that the perceived facial swelling was caused by the inferior displacement of separate and identifiable facial fat compartments. Aging coupled with gravity results in both a compartmental and intracompartment inferior displacement of facial fat. Long-lasting fillers injected intra-or extra-compartmentally also partake in this inferior migration.

The Observation Of Relative Occlusal Forces Of Posterior Implant-Supported Fixed Prostheses In Tooth-Borne And Distal End Circumstance By Using T-Scan System : A Prospective Study, Jinjudhapak Thongdee
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Objectives: to assess the relative occlusal forces (ROF) of posterior implants in two different occlusion designs in tooth-borne and distal end circumstances over time using the T-scan system and to compare the marginal bone loss in those situations and designs over time. Material and methods: Twenty patients requiring single posterior or distal end implants were randomly assigned to two groups: Implant-protected occlusion (IPO) or load (LOAD). The ROFs were measured using a T-scan on five occasions. Custom-made jigs were used to collect periapical parallel x-rays. The implant platforms were used as a reference to assess marginal bone loss. Results: In …

Objective: To evaluate the shear bond strength of human dentin with two different phosphate-monomer containing self-adhesive resin cements, an acrylic resin cement, and the effect of universal adhesive pretreatment on human dentin. Materials and Methods: Fifty extracted human third molars with the superficial dentin exposure at the buccal side were prepared. Resin composite cylinders with 2.38 mm diameter were cemented with 5 groups of resin cements and universal adhesives: Rely X U200, Single Bond Universal Adhesive with Rely X U200, Panavia SA Luting Multi, Clearfil Tri-S Bond Universal Quick with Panavia SA Luting Multi, and Super Bond C&B. Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Objective: This study aimed to translate and validate the Xerostomia Inventory (XI) and Summated Xerostomia Inventory (SXI) -Thai version in Thai middle-aged and older adults Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study which consisted of translation and validation phases. The XI and SXI were cross-culturally forward and backward translated and validated in 200 middle-aged and older Thai adults. The validity relied on the content, construct, and criterion validity. The reliability was determined by internal consistency. Results: The translation was done with good content validity. Both discriminant validity, which can distinguish between xerostomia and non-xerostomia groups, and the convergent validity, which …
