Synopsis On The Role Of Diode Laser In Root Canal Disinfection, Ashraf Abu-Seida, Mohamed El-Tayeb, Elhassan Hassanein
International Arab Journal of Dentistry
Effective root canal disinfection is necessary for success of endodontic treatment. Traditional chemo-mechanical techniques such as sodium hypochlorite, mechanical preparation and calcium hydroxide used for intracanal disinfection usually fail in cases of biofilm-related infections. Therefore, several new strategies are applied for root canal disinfection. One of these strategies is using of diode laser that has recently gained significant attention in the endodontic practice due to its antibacterial action, bio-stimulation, decrease of pain and improvement of success. Moreover, it has several advantages like its low cost, easily application, penetration power into dentine and smaller size device compared with other types of …

The Effect Of Speed Sintering On The Optical Properties And Microstructure Of Multi-Layered Cubic Zirconia, Ahmed Sabet
Dentistry
Purpose: Speed sintering was introduced to fabricate time-efficient chairside restorations, however, its influence on the microstructure and optical properties of zirconia is still unclear. This study investigated the influence of speed sintering on the microstructure and optical properties of ultra-translucent multi-layered cubic zirconia. Materials and methods: Ultra-translucent cubic zirconia (Katana™ UTML; Kuraray Noritake Dental Inc., Aichi, Japan) was cut into a total of 80 specimens, twenty within each layer of the blank. The specimens were divided into 2 groups: speed and conventional sintering. The translucency parameter, opalescence, chromaticity, and color difference were recorded using a spectrophotometer. Scanning electron microscope images …

Dysplasia In Oral Lichen Planus In A Sample Of Egyptians Attending 2 Tertiary Care Centers In Cairo, Dalia Ghalwash, Ayman El-Gawish
Dentistry
The present retrospective study aimed to evaluate dysplastic changes in oral lichen planus (OLP) lesions and related risk factors in a sample of Egyptians. The records of patients with histological diagnosis of OLP, who attended the Oral Medicine and Periodontology Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University, and Faculty of Dentistry, the British University in Egypt, in the period from 2020 to 2023 were used. The frequency of dysplasia was 10.19% and was statistically not associated with age, gender or smoking. Our results showed that the erosive type registered the highest rate (p<0.001), followed by atrophic, whereas papular type did not show dysplasia. Also, the most common site for dysplasia was the buccal mucosa and tongue (p<0.001 and p=0.001, respectively), then gingiva, lips, and floor of the mouth. Given the importance of OLP, among the Egyptian population seeking care in our clinics, more research should be conducted to create a database of statistical information.

This study aimed to evaluate the learning outcomes, accuracy, efficiency, and user perceptions of two dynamic navigation systems, X-Guide and IRIS-100, in implant placement training for novice dentists across varying anatomical complexities.Fourteen novice dentists were initially recruited, with 12 completing the full training program. Participants underwent implant placement training on models representing straightforward and advanced cases using two training sequences: X-Guide followed by IRIS-100, and IRIS-100 followed by X-Guide. Accuracy was assessed by measuring angular, coronal, and apical deviations, as well as operation time, across pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2 phases using the freehand technique, followed by repeated measures …

Backgrounds: In the last decade, photobiomodulation (PBM) has been utilized as a complementary therapeutic option for the management of musculoskeletal disorders such as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). However, its mechanism of action in skeletal muscle cells like the C2C12 myoblasts remains poorly understood. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of PBM, using low-level light therapy (LLLT), on the proliferation and differentiation capacity of C2C12 cells cultured under normal media and compared with cells under proinflammatory environments. Materials and Methods: PBM treatment consisted of the following LLLT dose regimens: 1-day of 3, 5, and 7 J/cm2/day single doses and 2-day …

This study aimed to compare the biological properties of a newly developed cockle shell-derived bioceramic sealer (NDBS) with those of iRoot SP in relation to human periodontal ligament (hPDL) cells. NDBS was prepared according to previous study, and both sealers were extracted in complete medium and diluted into four concentrations (non-diluted, 1:2, 1:4, and 1:8). Biocompatibility testing followed ISO 7405 standards, using the MTT assay to assess cytotoxicity and proliferation at 1, 3, and 7 days. pro-inflammatory (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α) and mineralization (ALP and OCN) gene expression analysis were performed using RT-qPCR on cells treated with 1:4 diluted extracts. Different abutment materials induce different immune responses in peri-implant soft tissues. Previous study showed that Ti base abutments without loading demonstrated comparable soft tissue-reaction to titanium abutments (Sampatanukul et al., 2018). Inflammatory responses after functional loading had not been elucidated in the previous study. This study investigates the inflammatory responses of peri-implant crevicular fluid around two abutment materials; titanium and titanium base (Ti base) after 6-months functional loading and identifies suitable abutment material which can induce stable inflammatory response in the peri-implant soft tissue. Sixteen implants of either Neodent or Straumann single implants were placed in sixteen patients in anterior …

The inflammatory status of pulp tissue is one of the factors influencing the outcome of vital pulp therapy. Corticosteroids are well known for their anti-inflammatory properties and their role in promoting mineralization-related differentiation in human dental pulp cells (HDPCs). However, studies investigating the effects of corticosteroids under inflammatory conditions in HDPCs remain limited. This study aimed to compare the effect of fluocinolone acetonide (FA), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and their combination on inflamed HDPCs, focusing on cell viability, expression of inflammatory and mineralization-related genes, and mineralization-related differentiation. HDPCs were treated with 20 µg/mL lipopolysaccharide (LPS) alone or in combination with …

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic inflammatory disease that can compromise the functioning of various organs, including the salivary glands (SG). The purinergic system is one of the most important inflammatory pathways in T2DM condition, and P2X7R and P2X4R are the primary purinergic receptors in SG that regulate inflammatory homeostasis. This study aimed to evaluate P2X7R and P2X4R expression, and morphological changes in the submandibular gland (SMG) in T2DM. Twenty‑four 5‑week‑old mice were randomly assigned to control (CON) and diabetes mellitus (DM) groups (n = 12 each). Body weight, diet, and blood glucose levels were monitored weekly. The …

B-cell lymphoma 6 (Bcl6) inhibits osteoclast differentiation in vitro; however, its role in orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of Bcl6 in OTM of rat molars.Materials and Methods: OTM was performed on the maxillary first molars of male rats using nickel-titanium coil springs (25 gf) for 14 days with or without local injection of FX1 (50 mg/kg), a Bcl6 inhibitor (n = 10 per group). Micro-computed tomography (CT) images were used to analyse OTM distance and bone morphometric parameters. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) determined Bcl6 expression and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining (TRAP)staining assessed osteoclast differentiation. …
