Dr. Harold Walter Hargis (1925-2015), a distinguished oral and maxillofacial surgeon, was born in Bluefield, West Virginia on June 11, 1925. His parents were Thomas and Mary Clare Hargis. Dr. Hargis made significant contributions to the field of dentistry.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and subsequently pursued his education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts from Howard University in 1951 and a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the same institution in 1955. During his time at Howard, he met his wife, Mary Frances Diggs, and joined the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) Syndrome is an infrequent vascular compression disorder, characterized predominantly by the extrinsic obstruction of the third part of the duodenum by the SMA, leading to a spectrum of gastrointestinal symptoms. While most commonly associated with rapid weight loss and anatomical variations, its occurrence in the context of adjacent malignancies remains exceedingly rare and clinically significant.

Here I detail a compelling case of a 49-year-old male, initially presenting with nonspecific symptoms of intermittent abdominal pain and vomiting. Oral Manifestations Of Metastatic Diseases: A Clinical And Histologic Analysis Of 7 Cases, Zeming Zheng Dds, Elizabeth Philipone Dmd

Metastatic diseases comprise 1-3% of malignant oral neoplasms with nearly one-third of patients being unaware of having a primary cancer1-4,9. This retrospective analysis identified all oral lesions diagnosed as metastatic disease in the CDM Department of Oral Pathology’s oral biopsy database from 2015-2020 and reported on patient demographics, clinical presentation and diagnosis, origin of the primary, and whether the patient had known history of the disease. From 17,500 total cases, 7 cases were identified as metastatic disease and described in detail. Clinicians’ recognition and awareness of these lesions’ often evasive, ambiguous oral presentations may help facilitate diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Leadership roles must incorporate representation from all involved individuals for the resulting decision-making process to reflect the interests and expertise of a diverse organization. Many resources have rightly focused on developing historically underrepresented racial and ethnic (HURE) leaders. Though numbers of Black and Hispanic dental school deans have increased, more work is needed for these and other HURE groups such as American Indians. Asians are not classified as HURE. As an aggregated group they have robust presence in the dental workforce in North America, the United Kingdom and Australia. The assumption is they are fine, so the group is ignored. …

A few things that are found in energy drinks that affect the oral cavity include caffeine, sugars, and acids. Childhood cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, are essential but have significant side effects on growth, development, and oral health. These therapies can disrupt cell division, damage growing tissues, and cause complications like delayed tooth eruption, soft tissue abnormalities, and saliva production changes. Despite these risks, there is a lack of comprehensive research and standardized protocols for managing oral health in survivors. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection linked to oropharyngeal and cervical cancers, particularly through HPV16. While the HPV vaccine has proven effective in reducing cancer and genital warts, its uptake remains limited due to low public and professional awareness. Dental hygienists, with their focus on preventive care, can play a key role in promoting HPV vaccination. This literature review explores how increased HPV education for hygienists can improve patient outcomes. By advocating for vaccination, providing patient education, offering guidance, and possibly administering the vaccine in dental offices, hygienists could significantly help reduce HPV-related cancers. The connection of periodontal disease and systemic erythematous lupus connects a multitude of inflammation symptoms. The body is plagued with consistent states of inflammation due to the autoimmune defense against the body's healthy tissues. This coincides with the inflammatory response produced by periodontal diseases. Studies indicate a strong correlation between the presence of periodontal disease in individuals suffering from SLE. Those with lupus are more likely to also have a greater incidence of oral characteristics that contribute to periodontal disease. School-entry requirements are one proven strategy to increase vaccination rates among children and youth and reduce the burden of HPV-related cancer. This study investigated community perceptions of an HPV vaccine school-entry mandate in Virginia and the consequences of a low threshold exemption option included in the legislation. Purpose: Regular assessment of the dental workforce is essential to improve the population's oral health. This analysis aimed to understand the trends in the distribution of dentists and dental hygienists (DHs) in Virginia.

Methods: Annual survey data (2013-2022) of dentists and DHs from the Virginia Department of Health Professions Healthcare Workforce Data Center was used to examine the trends in provider distribution by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and geography across Virginia.

The HPV vaccine has the potential to prevent nearly 92% of HPV-related cancer cases, yet its uptake remains suboptimal. While well-documented barriers to HPV vaccine uptake include inadequate knowledge and lack of provider recommendation, religious preferences have emerged as another crucial factor influencing vaccination decisions. This study examined the interrelatedness of religion, beliefs, and HPV vaccination uptake among children among Catholic, Evangelical, and Mainline Protestant parents. Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). To address STIs, one rural county public school district developed a series of Family Life Programs to educate pre-teens about pertinent health information. The Schooling Cancer Program (SCP) was developed in partnership with the local Cancer Research and Resource Center to raise awareness about cancer risk factors including HPV-related cancers and HPV prevention methods.
