Bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion is characterized by the proclined anterior teeth, protrusive lips, and a convex profile. A proper orthodontic treatment modality for efficient anchorage control is necessary to retract the anterior teeth and improve the facial esthetics significantly. The commonly used miniscrew could provide absolute anchorage, however, it is accompanied by some risks and complications, especially in adolescent females. In the treatment of skeletal Class II retrognathic mandible, the airway should be considered for the progress and outcome of the treatment. The case report demonstrates combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgery in a 39-year-old woman with chief complaint of maxillary protrusion. The clinical examination and X-ray revealed skeletal Class II with a retrognathic mandible, high mandibular plane, vertical maxillary excess (VME), bilateral deformed condyles, and narrow posterior airway space. This report concerns a relatively simple and reliable method of managing a case of maxillary dental malocclusion combined with a minor underdeveloped and receding mandible.

The chief complaint of the patient was crowded upper anterior teeth and receding chin. After a thorough examination, the patient was diagnosed with a relatively normal maxilla with a slightly small mandible. Impacted upper left canine and missing lower central incisors were noted.

This case report describes a successful orthodontic treatment in an Angle Class II division 1 malocclusion with severe space deficiency by temporary anchorage device (TAD) in a 15-year-old male patient. The skeletal analysis showed mandibular retrognathism and slightly hyperdivergent growth pattern. The treatment plan included four first premolars extractions combined with TAD application which used for anteroposterior and vertical anchorage control. The orthodontic treatment was to achieve the effect of counter-clockwise rotation of mandible for the patient who still has remaining growth. The open bite malocclusion is challenging to most orthodontists in part because the etiology is poorly understood. In this review we will explain the multifactorial etiology of this malocclusion. The role of facial growth and function in the development of this malocclusion, and several other factors that often are contributing to this malocclusion. The etiology, diagnosis and some important treatment considerations in patients with open bite will be discussed.

The PICO question focuses on the effectiveness of NSAIDs and acetaminophen in controlling discomfort without impeding tooth movement. The literature search reveals varying recommendations on analgesics, with some studies favoring acetaminophen. The evidence suggests that acetaminophen and short-term celecoxib are suitable choices for orthodontic analgesia. However, caution is advised in extrapolating findings from animal studies to human conditions.

This study examined patient satisfaction and changes in quality of life (QoL) following the orthognathic surgery performed to treat severe dentofacial deformities. The short form of the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) instrument was utilized to measure the negative impact related to severe dentofacial deformities on QoL. Ninety-five patients participated in this survey. Respondents reported significant reduction in the overall OHIP-14 score following the orthognathic surgery (p-value<0.0001). Approximately 92% reported post-operative resolution of their chief concerns. In conclusion, orthognathic surgery was found beneficial as it significantly reduced the negative impact of severe skeletal malocclusion on QoL of the patient we surveyed.

Purpose: To determine what adaptations orthodontists made in their practices during the COVID-19 pandemic in response to safety recommendations and to determine which of these adaptations orthodontists plan to continue to implement after resolution of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: An original 34-question survey was sent by mail to a randomized and geographically proportionate selection of actively practicing orthodontic specialists (N = 1000). Questions asked orthodontists about the changes they made during the pandemic in four overarching categories (infection control, social distancing, appliance use, and tele-orthodontics) and whether they anticipated keeping those changes post-pandemic. We propose a new deep convolutional cephalometric landmark detection framework for orthodontic treatment. Our proposed method consists of two major steps: landmark detection using a deep neural network for object detection, and landmark repair to ensure one instance per landmark class. For landmark detection, we modify the loss function of the backbone network YOLOv3 to eliminate the constrains on the bounding box and incorporate attention mechanism to improve the detection accuracy. For landmark repair, a triangle mesh is generated from the average face to eliminate superfluous instances, followed by estimation of missing landmarks from the detected ones using Laplacian Mesh. …

Introduction: This study evaluated current trends and perspectives among orthodontists regarding clear aligner therapy in the mixed dentition (CAMD), including insights into perceived indications, compliance, oral hygiene, and other factors.

Methods: An original, 22-item survey was mailed to both a randomized, nationally representative sample of practicing orthodontic specialists (n = 800) and to a specific, randomized sub-sample of high-aligner-prescribing orthodontists (n = 200). Questions assessed respondents’ demographic information, experience with clear aligner therapy, and perceived advantages/disadvantages of CAMD compared to fixed appliance therapy (FA). Responses were compared using McNemar’s chi-squared and paired t-tests to assess CAMD versus FA. …
