Several studies showed prevalence of gingiva recession in orthodontic patients. Some predisposing factors should be taken carefully considering the effect of the treatment modality. No consensus agreement was identified about the timing of the soft tissue augmentation intervention for orthodontic patients with the risk of gingival recession. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases, as well as electronic archives of the European Journal of Orthodontics, American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and Angle Orthodontist, were searched to collect articles that compared perception differences between dental professionals and laypeople. Articles that investigated perceptions of dental professionals were excluded.
