Scorzonera zorkunensis Coskuncelebi & S.Makbul (Asteraceae) is described and illustrated from Turkey. It grows on serpentine in alpine steppe vegetation together with several endemic Scorzonera L. species in southern Anatolia at altitudes of 2075-2100 m. It is morphologically similar to S. pisidica Hub.-Mor., but it differs in its habit and stem and leaf pubescence. Additionally, the size and micromorphological characters of the achenes and some anatomical traits of the leaves, stems, and roots are helpful in distinguishing these closely related taxa. The phylogenetic analyses based on nrDNA ITS sequence data indicate that S. pisidica is a sister species of the …

We investigated the relationship between leaf age and trichome/stomata densities in the snake tomato (Trichosanthes cucumerina L.). In a second experiment, the effects of different salinity levels on trichome and stomatal densities and their micromorphology were investigated. The leaf age investigation utilised young, semiold, and old leaves, while the salinity study utilised 0, 60, 120, and 180 mM NaCl for the investigation. Two morphotypes (Variant --Green and Variant B-Light Green) of T. cucumerina were used for the salinity experiment while only Variant B-Light Green was used for the leaf age investigation. This research project was conducted to evaluate the use of different waste materials as potting media for the dwarf variety Dahlia hortensis 'Figaro.' A total of 10 treatments were used where each treatment, consisting of 9 plants, was replicated 3 times. The results associated with plant growth parameters indicated that the maximum values for plant height, number of side shoots per plant, number of tubers per plant, flower diameter, and least days to flower emergence were observed in media containing coconut coir; the maximum corm weight per plant, however, was found in T_8, where rice hull was added to silt. …

We investigated the role of antioxidant compounds (e.g.,\alpha-tocopherol, phytochelatins, glutathione, and other non-protein thiols) in the cadmium (Cd) tolerance of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L. cv. Arak2811) seedlings exposed to different concentrations of Cd (0-100 \muM) for a week. A concentration- and tissue- dependent response to Cd was observed. Increasing Cd supply markedly reduced the dry weight of roots. Plants accumulated a substantial amount of Cd, especially in the roots. Levels of \alpha-tocopherol showed a significant increase with an increase in the concentration of Cd in leaves. Upon Cd exposure, \alpha-tocopherol levels followed a similar pattern in the root tissue with …

The aim of the present study was to determine the antioxidant system responses of a xerophytic plant to salinity and drought, which were not elucidated before. Physiological and antioxidant responses of the xerophytic plant Gypsophila aucheri Boiss. were investigated under salinity (100 and 300 mM NaCl) and drought (withholding watering) treatment for 2 weeks in a controlled growth chamber. The valve morphology of Mastogloia braunii Grunow, Mastogloia pumila Cleve, and Mastogloia vasta Hustedt were investigated using field material. Specimens for study were collected from Homa Lagoon, İzmir Bay, Turkey (4-29 °C; salinity 35%o-54%o) as epipelic and epiphytic (Ulva lactuca L.). The valve morphological characteristics of the 3 species were measured by calibrated ocular micrometer using 20 specimens from each species per station. Phytoremediation is an emerging technology for cleaning industrial and urban contamination (Peuke and Rennenberg, 2005). Many factors including germination rate, biomass changes, biochemical changes, and nutrient changes must be determined in order to utilize a plant for phytoremediation. Our results showed that Prosopis pubescens (Screw bean mesquite) is a hyperaccumulator of copper from copper sulfate and a feasible option to remediate fields with up to 200 ppm of copper sulfate.
Screw bean mesquite seeds are viable even after 30 years of storage. Both copper sulfate and copper nitrate decreased the germination rate of screw bean mesquite seeds. In soil grown …

Grain polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity can cause discoloration of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) food products. Five crosses (PI 117635/Antelope; Fielder/ NW03681; Fielder/Antelope; NW07OR1070/Antelope; NW07OR1066/OR2050272H) were selected to study the genetic inheritance of PPO activity. STS markers, PPO18, PPO29 and STS01, were used to identify lines with putative alleles at the Ppo-A1 and Ppo-D1 loci conditioning low or high PPO activity. ANOVA showed significant genotypic effects on PPO activity (P\0.0001) in all populations. The generations and generation 9 genotype effects were not significant in any population. Modifying lignin content and composition are targets to improve bioenergy crops for cellulosic conversion to biofuels. In sorghum and other C4 grasses, the brown midrib mutants have been shown to reduce lignin content and alter its composition. Bmr12 encodes the sorghum caffeic O-methyltransferase, which catalyzes the penultimate step in monolignol biosynthesis. From an EMS-mutagenized TILLING population, four bmr12 mutants were isolated. DNA sequencing identified the four missense mutations in the Bmr12 coding region, which changed evolutionarily conserved amino acids Ala71Val, Pro150Leu, Gly225Asp, and Gly325Ser. Genome-wide structural and gene content variations are hypothesized to drive important phenotypic variation within a species. Structural and gene content variations were assessed among four soybean (Glycine max) genotypes using array hybridization and targeted resequencing. Many chromosomes exhibited relatively low rates of structural variation (SV) among genotypes. However, several regions exhibited both copy number and presence-absence variation, the most prominent found on chromosomes 3, 6, 7, 16, and 18. Interestingly, the regions most enriched for SV were specifically localized to gene-rich regions that harbor clustered multigene families. Gene expression is controlled by the complex interaction of transcription factors binding to promoters and other regulatory DNA elements. One common characteristic of the genomic regions associated with regulatory proteins is a pronounced sensitivity to DNase I digestion. We generated genome-wide high-resolution maps of DNase I hypersensitive (DH) sites from both seedling and callus tissues of rice (Oryza sativa). Approximately 25% of the DH sites from both tissues were found in putative promoters, indicating that the vast majority of the gene regulatory elements in rice are not located in promoter regions. Factors essential for plant life include adequate levels of light, moisture, mineral nutrients, and temperature; though the list is small, each is crucial for survival. This article is a contemplation of how one of these critical factors, light, impacts the biology of our 2012 Wildflower of the Year, Mitchella repens, partridge berry. Aside from issues of reproductive biology, ecological literature on partridge berry is meager. Consequently most of what follows is derived from general works on woodland ecology, perusal of which provides sufficient insight about the biology of Mitchella to inspire ideas worthy of further study.

Eryngium babadaghensis G.Ecevit-Genç, E.Akalın & A.Wörz sp. nova (Apiaceae, Saniculoideae) is described as a new species from the Babadağ (Fethiye-Muğla) in south-west Turkey. The new species is closely related to E. kotschyi Boiss., which is endemic to Turkey. A Latin diagnosis; taxonomic descriptions; photos of the holotype, fruit, and transverse sections of the basal leaves, peduncles, and fruits; and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the calyx and surface of the scales on the mericarp of the new species are presented.
