Phenolic compounds function as stress indicators because they accumulate to high levels in many plant tissues in response to a wide range of biotic and abiotic signals. These compounds are involved in pollen development, pollination, pollen germination, and pollen tube growth. The mature pollen grains of Spartium junceum L., Lagerstroemia indica L., Thuja orientalis L., and Petunia hybrida L. collected from control (less polluted) and polluted areas [mainly SO_2, NO_2, CO, hydrocarbons (HC), and airborne particulate material (APM)]. This study aimed at assessing the morphological variation in 25 accessions of an Irish collection of Brassica oleracea using 44 morphological traits. The morphological traits showed a pronounced variation among accessions. Vegetative preflowering and maturity traits revealed higher variation than seedling traits. Of the 44 morphological descriptors used, 28 were significantly different and proved useful in examining diversity and differentiating among accessions studied. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed variation among accessions, where 87.24% of the total variation in the morphological data was separated on the first five components, indicating a high degree of correlation among traits studied. Intercropping cereal grains and legumes has potential as an alternative cool-season forage crop in low-input farming systems. The objectives of this study were to quantify the effects of density, species proportion, and nitrogen (N) supply on the biomass accumulation of field pea and spring oat grown as sole or intercrops. Greenhouse experiments were conducted using an additive series experimental design. Treatments included three fertilizer N rates and 20 density/proportion combinations in a randomized complete block with four replications. Aternanthera (Amaranthaceae) is a diverse genus (80-200 species) largely restricted to the American Tropics. With Pedersenia and Tidestromia, it makes up the Alternantheroid clade in Gomphrenoideae. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses of nucleotide sequences of nuclear (ITS) and plastid (rpl16, trnL-F) and morphological characters identify that the capitate stigma of Alternanthera is a synapomorpy within the Alternantheroids. Symphytum anatolicum Boiss. is an endemic species in the Flora of Turkey and the East Aegean Islands. It was first collected by d'Urville on the island of Cos in 1820 and named Symphytum asperrimum d'Urv. The plant was again collected by Boissier near İzmir (Smyrna) in 1842, and described by him as S. anatolicum in 1844. There are 4 collections mentioned in the protologue in Boissier's Flora Orientalis (1879). The herbarium specimen "Hab. in umbrosis montium circa Smyrnam", housed in G-Boiss. Herbarium, was chosen as lectotype as it best represents the species description.

The current conservation status of the Salvia L. (sage) taxa of the family Lamiaceae distributed in the East, South-East, Central, North Anatolian, and Marmara geographic regions of Turkey was reassessed at regional, national, and global levels using IUCN Red List categories and criteria. In accordance with the present taxonomic revision of the genus since 2005, the study area seems to cover 79 taxa, 36 of which are endemic and 4 of which are rare nonendemic; the remaining 39 taxa are widely distributed. Ornithogalum malatyanum Mutlu is described as a new species from Malatya Province, East Anatolia, Turkey. A description, photographs, and an identification key including related species are given. The International Union for Conservation of Nature threat category and observations on the ecology of the populations are noted. The chromosome number of the new species is 2n = 24. The morphological differences between the new species and related taxa are also discussed.

Echinops ritrodes Bunge, E. gaillardotii Boiss., E. adenocaulos Boiss., E. chardinii Boiss. & Buhse, and E. tenuisectus Rech.f. were recorded for the first time in Turkey. The taxa are described and illustrated. Geographical distributions of the taxa are also mapped, and IUCN threat categories of the populations are discussed.

A Simple Technique For Cross-Sectioning Gymnosperm Needle Leaves Using Microtome, Jukyeong Eo

If a staining-permanent slide is not needed, this simple and faster microtome technique is very useful for cross-sectioning gymnosperm needle leaves. The technique employs 2× polyvinyl alcohol-lactic acid-glycerol (PVLG) without the steps of fixation, dehydration, clearing, embedding, deparaffinisation, and hydration. Conveniently, this technique can also be applied to thick leaves and other organs of angiosperms. The procedure is very simple and is suggested for use in plant anatomy research.

Chromosome numbers and karyotypes of some species belonging to the genus Artemisia L. (Asteraceae) were investigated, and chromosome counts of 12 species, 1 of which was counted for the first time, are presented with a thorough compilation of previously published data. All of the species studied belong to the subgenus Artemisia Chromosome numbers of 6 taxa confirmed the previous data. Additionally, karyotypes of 8 species were reported. Vigna unguiculata is an important food legume crop in the semiarid tropics. It suffers from a host of agricultural constraints including damage due to diseases and pests. Judicious application of biotechnological methods can lead to considerable improvement in this important crop. Shoot regeneration from unsliced and longitudinally sliced cotyledon node explants obtained from 3-day-old to 5-day-old seedlings grown in vitro was achieved on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1.11, 2.22, 3.33, and 4.44 \muM benzylaminopurine (BA) supplemented with 1.0 mg/L polyvinylpyrrolidone and 500 mg/L bacteriostatic Augmentin. Two new Cephalaria Schrad. ex Roem. et Schult. species (Caprifoliaceae) from Turkey, Cephalaria davisiana Göktürk & Sümbül and Cephalaria sumbuliana Göktürk, are described and illustrated. A map showing their distribution and other related taxa is given. The morphological differences of the 2 new species are discussed and comparisons are made with the similar Cephalaria speciosa Boiss. & Kotschy and Cephalaria elmaliensis Hub.-Mor. & V.A.Matthews. In addition to morphological observations, C. davisiana, C. sumbuliana, C. elmaliensis, and C. speciosa were analysed by applying RAPD-PCR techniques. RAPD methods clearly distinguished between the new species and the 2 species that they resemble.

The aim of this study was to describe the Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae pollen dynamics in the atmosphere of Salamanca (mid-west Spain) during the years 2000-2007. Measurements were performed by the volumetric method using a Burkard spore trap located in the urban centre at the height of 20 m above ground level. Viola patrinii DC. (Violaceae) petiole explants were used for inducing calli. Significant callus proliferation was observed on MS medium supplemented with 16.12 \muM NAA and 13.33 \muM BA. Shoot regeneration was achieved upon transferring the green friable calli to MS medium with a 2-fold dilution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate supplemented with 23.25 \muM Kn and 2.68 \muM NAA. Maximum shoot regeneration was achieved in 4 weeks. Multiple shoots were separated and further cultured in half-strength MS medium supplemented with 9.85 \muM IBA with 2% sucrose. We undertook an evaluation of the physical and chemical quality of soil characteristics, micro- and macroscopic features of morphology, distribution, and mycorrhizal relationships of Terfezia boudieri Chatin. The topsoil was found to be 54.73% sand, 21.97% clay, 23.30% dust, 45.27% dust-clay, 0.126% nitrogen, 1.848% organic matter, and 3.78% total lime. Investigations revealed that the soil contained 40.92 ppm P_2O_5, 613.0 ppm K_2O, 28.82 ppm Na, and 0.164 mmhos/cm salt. It had a pH of 7.12 and the soil type was determined to be sand-clay-slimy.
