On The Identity Of The Turkish Endemic Cyperus Noeanus (Cyperaceae), Attila Mesterházy, Filip Verloove
Turkish Journal of Botany
Cyperus noeanus Boiss. is known only from the type specimen that was collected in Central Anatolia by Wilhelm Noë. It is considered an endemic species in Turkey. A detailed morphological study of the type specimen and comparison with similar related species in section Compressi Kunth demonstrated that the morphological characters of C. noeanus entirely fall within the range of characters of C. glaber L., which is a widely scattered species in Turkey, and widespread in S Europe and SW Asia as well. Based on our comparative study, we suggest that C. noeanus should be treated as a synonym of C. …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Metallothioneins are low-molecular-weight, cysteine-rich proteins able to bind a variety of heavy metal ions. They are involved in the maintenance of micronutrient homeostasis and detoxification of nonessential heavy metals. Plant metallothioneins are classified into four main types based on the number and arrangement of cysteine residues. Here we report on the isolation of novel complementary and genomic DNA from a model for a short-day plant, Ipomoea nil (Japanese morning glory), that encodes 66- or 76-amino acid residue proteins. In silico and phylogenetic analysis of putative amino acid sequences confirmed that these 66- and 76-amino acid residue proteins belong, respectively, to …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Doubled haploid induction is one of the available methods normally used for sugar beet breeding. Gynogenic haploid explants of sugar beet induced with 1 or 2 mg L-1 6-benzylaminopurine were treated with 5 g L-1 colchicine, then subcultured on a solidified MS medium plus 0.2 mg L-1 kinetin. Colchicine doubled the chromosome number of 27.7% of the treated haploid explants. With the aim of increasing the number of doubled haploid explants, the effects of five levels of proline (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, or 0.4 mM) on the explants' proliferation, propagation, and shoot length were compared. With a large effect size …

Turkish Journal of Botany
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important noncoding regulatory RNAs. They are expressed endogenously and are 18-26 nucleotides in length. These small molecules are conserved evolutionarily within the same kingdom and their conserved nature becomes an important logical tool for the quest of conserved miRNAs in other species by homology search using bioinformatics tools. Cherry (Prunus avium L.) is one of the important and nutritious species of the family Rosaceae, mainly distributed in temperate climate. This research is an attempt to identify and characterize conserved miRNAs in cherry from express sequence tags (ESTs). Bioinformatics analysis of cherry ESTs resulted in the identification of …

Understanding the mechanisms of how environmental factors limit species distribution along environmental gradients is a central question in ecology. This study aimed to understand species acclimation in view of photosynthetic parameters in an arid mountainous region. We measured some photosynthetic parameters and light and CO2 photosynthesis response curves for all plant communities with seven dominant species in 13 sites along an elevation gradient in the Qilian Mountains in arid northwestern China. The results showed that species in xerothermic environments had low maximum rate of carboxylation (Vcmax) (14.5 μmol m-2 s-1) and maximum rate of electron transport (Jmax) (22.7 μmol m-2 …

The Morphological Intermediacy Of Erigeron ×Huelsenii (Asteraceae), A Hybrid Between E. Acris And E. Canadensis, Artur Pliszko, Kinga Kostrakiewicz-Gieralt
Turkish Journal of Botany
Morphological intermediacy is considered the first evidence of hybridization in many plant studies. However, morphological intermediacy does not always provide hybrid origin and can be a result of divergence. In this study, the authors revised the morphological intermediacy of Erigeron ×huelsenii, a putative hybrid between the Eurasian E. acris s. str. and North American E. canadensis, using the character count procedure, a method that allows distinguishing hybridity from divergence. The measurements were made on herbarium specimens, including 100 specimens of E. acris s. str., 100 specimens of E. canadensis, and 50 specimens of E. ×huelsenii, which were collected in northeastern …

Overexpression Of The Glycine Max Chalcone Isomerase (Gmchi) Gene In Transgenictalinum Paniculatum Plants, Thi Nhu Trang Vu, Thi Hong Trang Le, Phu Hiep Hoang, Danh Thuong Sy, Thi Thu Thuy Vu, Hoang Mau Chu
Turkish Journal of Botany
Talinum paniculatum plants contain flavonoids and saponins, which have strong antioxidant properties and are used in the treatment of numerous diseases, such as inflammation, allergies, and gastric ulcers. Currently, there is no published research on the flavonoid content of T. paniculatum plants; however, it has been determined that the species in the genus Talinum have very low flavonoid content, and therefore the effective approach to enhance the flavonoid content in T. paniculatum plants is overexpression of the Glycine max chalcone isomerase (GmCHI) gene. In this study, we analyzed GmCHI gene overexpression, which has increased total flavonoid content in transgenic T. …

Two New Malagasy Species Of Genus Piper L. (Piperaceae), Piper Malgassicum And Piper Tsarasotrae, And Their Phylogenetic Position, Enrico Palchetti, Stefano Biricolti, Massimo Gori, Giulia Rota Nodari, Nicola Gandolfi, Alessio Papini
Turkish Journal of Botany
Here we describe two new species of genus Piper L. from Madagascar: Piper malgassicum and Piper tsarasotrae, the species names referring to the currently known distribution areas. These two species contribute, at least in part, to the production of local voatsiperifery pepper, probably mixed together with P. borbonense, and are therefore economically relevant as spices. We used a selected set of characters (those more easily observable on herbarium samples) for principal component analysis to assess the relative distance between the species, including the analysis of the autochthonous species of Piper known from Africa and Madagascar. In order to check the …

Advances To The Taxonomic Knowledge Of Plantago Subulata(Plantago Sect. Maritima, Plantaginaceae), Gustavo Hassemer
Turkish Journal of Botany
Plantago sect. Maritima is a group of Mediterranean narrow-leaved plantains whose taxonomy and nomenclature are particularly complex and still unresolved. This work has the objective of advancing the taxonomic knowledge of this section by revising and presenting novelties for the synonymy of P. subulata, including the lectotypification of four names with recent usage (since 1985) within this group: P. sarda, P. subulata var. atlantis, P. subulata var. granatensis, and P. subulata var. insularis. Furthermore, two synonymizations are newly proposed, and the situation of two Plantago species names published by Nyman in 1881 in his Conspectus Floræ Europææ is clarified.
