International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Physical exercise is known causer of acute traumas in biological structures. Chronically, physical training or can lead to a coherent sequence of traumas leading to Adaptation (Functional Overreaching – FOR) or to an imbalance between stimulus and recovery leading to Overtraining Syndrome (OTS). In the present study we analyzed muscle and hepatic cytokines concentration: Interleukin-6 (IL6), Tumor Necrose Factor-Alpha (TNF-α), Interleukin-1Beta (IL1-β) and Interleukin-10 (IL-10); muscle and serum concentration of glutamate (GLU) and glutamine (GLN); serum concentration of C-reactive Protein (CRP), Alpha-1 Glicoprotein Acid (AGA), Albumin (ALB), Uric Acid (UA), Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP), Creatine Kinase (CK), Red …

Overwintering Energetics Of Lepidoptera: The Effects Of Winter Warming And Thermal Variability., Caroline M. Williams 2012 University of Western Ontario

Overwintering Energetics Of Lepidoptera: The Effects Of Winter Warming And Thermal Variability., Caroline M. Williams

Caroline M Williams

Winter temperatures are changing rapidly, and although winter warming reduces cold stress for overwintering ectotherms, temperature-mediated increases in metabolic rate can decrease fitness in dormant insects by increasing consumption of energy reserves. Increases in thermal variability also increase energetic demands, due to non-linear thermal response curves. My objective was to quantify the negative effects of winter warming and increases in thermal variability on a range of Lepidopteran species. As overwintering insects rely on lipid catabolism, accurate lipid measurement is central to my dissertation; so I first compared four methods of lipid quantification; concluding thin layer chromatography was the only method …

Roles Of The Ion Channel Nalcn In Neuronal Excitability Control, Boxun Lu 2012 University of Pennsylvania

Roles Of The Ion Channel Nalcn In Neuronal Excitability Control, Boxun Lu

Boxun Lu

The resting membrane potential (RMP) of a neuron is set by a complex balance between charged ions, ion channels and transporters. Many of the ion channels have been identified at the molecular level. Missing from the molecular identification has been the voltage-insensitive background sodium ‘‘leak’’ conductance that depolarizes the RMP from the equilibrium potential of potassium and provides a crucial contribution to neuronal excitability One candidate for the molecular identity of this conductance is the protein NALCN. NALCN is a previously uncharacterized orphan member in the sodium/calcium channel family. It is widely expressed in the nervous system. My thesis project …

The Proteomic Response Of Sea Squirts (Genus Ciona Congeners) To Hyposalinity Stress, James S. Koman 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

The Proteomic Response Of Sea Squirts (Genus Ciona Congeners) To Hyposalinity Stress, James S. Koman

Master's Theses

The ascidian species Ciona savignyi and C. intestinalis are invasive species but show interspecific differences in their population response to hypo-saline stress associated with heavy winter-run off events that are predicted to become more frequent due to climate change. Despite an almost world-wide distribution, C. intestinalis seems to be more susceptible to hypo-saline stress than the geographically more limited C. savignyi. Given that the genomes of both species are fully sequenced, we were able to compare their proteomic response to both acute and chronic salinity to characterize the mechanisms that are responsible for setting tolerance limits to hyposaline conditions …

Ipla2Β Overexpression In Smooth Muscle Exacerbates Angiotensin Ii-Induced Hypertension And Vascular Remodeling, Lindsay E Calderon, Shu Liu, Wen Su, Zhongwen Xie, Zhenheng Guo, Wanda Eberhard, Ming C. Gong

Physiology Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVES: Calcium independent group VIA phospholipase A2 (iPLA2β) is up-regulated in vascular smooth muscle cells in some diseases, but whether the up-regulated iPLA2β affects vascular morphology and blood pressure is unknown. The current study addresses this question by evaluating the basal- and angiotensin II infusion-induced vascular remodeling and hypertension in smooth muscle specific iPLA2β transgenic (iPLA2β-Tg) mice.

METHOD AND RESULTS: Blood pressure was monitored by radiotelemetry and vascular remodeling was assessed by morphologic analysis. We found that the angiotensin II-induced increase in diastolic pressure was significantly higher in iPLA2β-Tg …

Pubspectra - Open Data Access Fluorescence Spectra, George Mcnamara

George McNamara

The Internet is enabling greater access to spectral imaging publications, spectral graphs, and data than that was available a generation ago. The spectral imaging systems discussed in this issue of Cytometry work because reagent and hardware spectra are reproducible, reusable, and provide input to spectral unmixing and spectral components recognition algorithms. These spectra need to be readily available in order to determine what to purchase, how to use it, and what the output means. We refer to several commercially sponsored and academic spectral web sites and discuss our spectral graphing and data sites. Sites include fluorescent dye graph servers from …

Spatial Distribution And Modulation Of Nitric Oxide Synthase In A Hypertensive Rat Model, Andrew Yannaccone

Theses and Dissertations

There are gaps in the fundamental understanding of the expression of nitric oxide synthases (NOS) in the microvasculature. We examined co-localization of NOS1 (nNOS), NOS2 (iNOS) and NOS3 (eNOS) in the spinotrapezius muscle of young adult male Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) and Spontaneously Hypertensive (SHR) rats according to fiber type using immunohistochemistry and brightfield microscopy. Data regarding fiber distribution, population and morphology data were collected. Alkaline phosphatase staining was used to determine capillary density and average number of capillaries around a fiber. Gel electrophoresis and Western blot techniques were used to compare myosin heavy chain (MHC) protein expression with fiber type population …
