The distribution of avian haemosporidians of the genus Leucocytozoon in the Neotropics remains poorly understood. Recent studies confirmed their presence in the region using molecular techniques alone, but evidence for gametocytes and data on putative competent hosts for Leucocytozoon are still lacking outside highland areas. We combined morphological and molecular data to characterize a new Leucocytozoon species infecting a non-migratory red-legged seriema (Cariama cristata), the first report of a competent host for Leucocytozoon in Brazil. Leucocytozoon cariamae n. sp. is distinguished from the Leucocytozoon fringillinarum group by its microgametocytes that are not strongly appressed to the host cell …

Parasites Versus Predation: The Role Of Chronic And Acute Parasite Exposure In Infection Risk And Anti-Predator Behavior, Delaney Farrell 2023 Nova Southeastern University

Parasites Versus Predation: The Role Of Chronic And Acute Parasite Exposure In Infection Risk And Anti-Predator Behavior, Delaney Farrell

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Parasites with complex, multi-host lifecycles often engage in host behavior manipulation to increase transmission between successive hosts. In intermediate fish hosts, previous research has measured increased frequency of conspicuous behaviors, decreased swimming performance, and reduced antipredator behavior, which would collectively increase the fish’s risk of predation. In ecosystems where this type of parasite increased trophic transmission (PITT) occurs, parasites can play a substantial role in food webs. In this study, I investigate how chronic versus acute exposure to the trematode Euhaplorchis sp. A. affects the antipredator behavior of the Gulf killifish Fundulus grandis. Using a fully crossed design, I …

In Germany, the knowledge about ticks infesting bats is limited, and is restricted only to a few studies, most of them dating back decades. To further improve our knowledge on ticks parasitising bats, healthy and sick bats in central Germany were examined for ticks. In total 519 larvae and one nymph of Carios vespertilionis were collected from nine bat species: Eptesicus nilssonii, Eptesicus serotinus, Myotis daubentonii, Myotis myotis, Nyctalus leisleri, Pipistrellus nathusii, Pipistrellus pygmaeus, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, and Vespertilio murinus. Either the presence of C. vespertilionis was new for some areas or it was confirmed in some federal states in …

Sheep Worms – Sustainable Summer-Autumn Worm Control, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Western Australia 2023 Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Western Australia

Sheep Worms – Sustainable Summer-Autumn Worm Control, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Animal production and livestock factsheets

A summer drenching program for sheep worm control is now recognised as a key cause of drench resistance in Western Australia. However, some small changes can increase the sustainability of pre-emptive control programs. Drenches in summer should always be given to younger, growing sheep (current and previous year’s age groups), whereas adult sheep should be drenched in autumn, or if drenched in summer, some should be left untreated (if drenching at all). Research shows that this reduces the chance of developing drench resistance but still provides effective worm control.

Evaluation Of The Humoral Immune Responses To Plasmodium Vivax Circumsporozoite Protein (Csp)-Based Pre-Erythrocytic Vaccine Candidates, Jack Esquenazi 2023 University of South Florida

Evaluation Of The Humoral Immune Responses To Plasmodium Vivax Circumsporozoite Protein (Csp)-Based Pre-Erythrocytic Vaccine Candidates, Jack Esquenazi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Malaria, caused by the apicomplexan Plasmodium spp. , is a major public health issue that impacts over one-third of the world’s population ,with Plasmodium vivax accounting for over 130 million clinical cases annually. The circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is the most abundant molecule on the surface of Plasmodium sporozoites and is considered a leading pre-erythrocytic stage vaccine candidate. CSP is essential for sporozoite maturation, migration, and invasion. Anti-CSP antibodies interrupt sporozoite migration and infection of hepatocytes thus reducing liver-stage burden. P. vivax CSP is composed of three subdomains: a highly polymorphic immunodominant central repeat region (CRR), conserved N-terminal ,and C-terminal subdomains. …

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome Of Eulaelaps Huzhuensis (Mesostigmata: Haemogamasidae), Hui-Juan Yang, Zhi-Hua Yang, Tian-Guang Ren, Wen-Ge Dong

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Some mites of the family Haemogamasidae can transmit a variety of zoonotic diseases and have important public health and safety implications. Currently, however, little attention has been paid to molecular data of Haemogamasidae species, limiting our understanding of their evolutionary and phylogenetic relationships. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Eulaelaps huzhuensis was determined for the first time, and its genomic information was analyzed in detail. The mitochondrial genome of E. huzhuensis is 14,872 bp in length with 37 genes and two control regions. The base composition showed a distinct AT preference. Twelve protein-coding genes have a typical ATN …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

The spotted fever group (SFG) of Rickettsia are zoonotic disease-causing pathogens, commonly transmitted by hard ticks to a wide range of hosts, including humans. Rickettsia conorii is the common SFG recognised in India, whereas most of the infections due to other group species go undifferentiated at the species level. Hence, this study was conducted to screen host-seeking ticks in the Western Ghats region, India, for the DNA of SFG Rickettsia. The ticks were collected from Kerala, Goa, and Maharashtra states of India during a survey conducted between November 2017 and January 2018. In total, 288 tick pools were screened …

Preliminary Characterization And Functional Validation Of Pre-Erythrocytic Vaccine Candidates For The Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Vivax, Justin Lee Nicholas III 2023 University of South Florida

Preliminary Characterization And Functional Validation Of Pre-Erythrocytic Vaccine Candidates For The Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Vivax, Justin Lee Nicholas Iii

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

RTS,S/AS01, vaccine targeting malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, used in moderate to high malaria transmission, provides hope for pre-erythrocytic (PE) subunit malaria vaccine development. Despite this vaccine advance, efforts to develop an efficacious vaccine against the neglected parasite Plasmodium vivax have lagged. In addition, there exists a gap in our understanding of PE antigens that can induce broadly-neutralizing antibodies. In this dissertation, we provide the preliminary characterization of vaccine candidates targeting the PE of P. vivax. Through transcriptomic profiling data and a target product profile, we identified critical P. vivax antigens (SSP3, SPECT-1, and M2-MAEBL) that can potentially be targets …

Behavior Changes And Lc50 Of Dried Garlic (Allium Sativum) Acute Toxicity In Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Juvenile [Research Note], Gregoria Erazo Pagador, Haydee Rose Dumaran Paciente, Blan Jericho Caloyloy

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Plant-based compounds are emerging substitutes for chemical treatments in aquaculture since they are known to cause less harm to both the environment and its organisms. Garlic (Allium sativum) is a popular herb that has a broad range of uses, especially in the control and treatment of bacterial and parasitic diseases. However, its toxicity to tilapia is not well-studied. Hence, this study was conducted to test the toxicity levels of garlic powder in juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by determining the cumulative mortality and median lethal concentration (LC50). Test fish were exposed through immersion in …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Understanding the geographic distribution of Rickettsia montanensis infections in Dermacentor variabilis is important for tick-borne disease management in the United States, as both a tick-borne agent of interest and a potential confounder in surveillance of other rickettsial diseases. Two previous studies modeled niche suitability for D. variabilis with and without R. montanensis, from 2002-2012, indicating that the D. variabilis niche overestimates the infected niche. This study updates these, adding data since 2012.

Methods: Newer surveillance and testing data were used to update Species Distribution Models (SDMs) of D. variabilis, and R. montanensis infected D. variabilis, in …

MANTER: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity

As part of an ongoing project to inventory the helminth parasites of amphibians from the state of Hidalgo, Central Mexico, specimens of Rhinella horribilis were collected from three municipalities: Eloxochitlán, Huehuetla, and San Felipe Orizatlán. A total of eight taxa of helminths were found: three digeneans (Haematoloechus sp., Langeronia macrocirra, and Mesocoelium danforthi) and five nematodes (Cosmocerca sp., Cruzia morleyi, Ochoterenella chiapensis, Oswaldocruzia subauricularis, and Rhabdias sp.). The highest species richness was recorded in Huehuetla. All reports of these species of helminths represent new locality records for Mexico.

Investigating Plasmodial Proteostasis Mechanisms To Counter Artemisinin Resistance, Melissa Rosenthal 2023 University of Nebraska Medical Center

Investigating Plasmodial Proteostasis Mechanisms To Counter Artemisinin Resistance, Melissa Rosenthal

Theses & Dissertations

Malaria remains a significant global health threat, responsible for 691,000 deaths in 2021. Artemisinin-based combination therapies have contributed significantly to decline of malaria disease burden. Upon activation by heme, artemisinins are believed to kill parasites by non-specifically alkylating proteins and causing widespread damage to the parasite. Artemisinin resistance is now prevalent in regions of Southeast Asia and resistance has recently emerged in Africa, where over 90% of all malaria deaths occur. Mutations in Kelch13 (K13) are believed to mediate artemisinin resistance by either reducing parasite hemoglobin digestion, and consequently artemisinin activation, or by increasing parasite stress response mechanisms. We hypothesize …

Prevalence Of Ehrlichia And Rickettsia Within Ticks In Arkansas State Parks, Haley Stanton 2023 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Prevalence Of Ehrlichia And Rickettsia Within Ticks In Arkansas State Parks, Haley Stanton

Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Within the past few decades, the number of diagnoses of tick-borne diseases – such as spotted fever rickettsiosis and ehrlichiosis – has steadily increased throughout the United States, with Arkansas having one of the highest rates in the country. These diseases pose a risk to both humans and animals, as both can acquire these infections from ticks. Due to the increasing geographic range of ticks, rise in cases, and likely underdiagnosis of these diseases, this study aimed to identify the infection rate of ticks themselves in multiple state parks in Arkansas. Four Arkansas state parks were each visited once a …

Potency Of Novel Anti-Toxoplasmic Compounds, Matthias Walters 2023 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Potency Of Novel Anti-Toxoplasmic Compounds, Matthias Walters

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Toxoplasma gondii, the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, is an intracellular apicomplexan parasite. Toxoplasmosis is often asymptomatic, though, it can be debilitating or fatal to immunocompromised individuals and fetuses, being one of the leading causes of fetal mortality and birth defects. Toxoplasmosis is treated with a synergistic combination of drugs pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine; however, these drugs are only effective against the acute stage of infection, and the pyrimethamine is relatively cytotoxic, damaging bone marrow and causing noxious side effects. Due to these limitations, a safer alternative that targets the chronic stage of infection is needed. In this study, we tested …

Investigating Novel Chemotherapeutics Against The Parasite Toxoplasma Gondii, Braydon Dreher 2023 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Investigating Novel Chemotherapeutics Against The Parasite Toxoplasma Gondii, Braydon Dreher

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular protozoan, is a globally prevalent parasite due to the infectivity of T. gondii with nearly 2.5 billion people affected worldwide. Toxoplasma gondii can cause toxoplasmosis, which is a disease acquired through the consumption of undercooked meat or found in the feces of felines, and often leads to profound neuropathology and potentially death. Currently, acute toxoplasmosis is treated with pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine, which is a combination of an antiprotozoal and a sulfonamide. This combination of drugs directly targets the acute stage of infection but has failed to eliminate or impact the chronic carriage of bradyzoites while …

MANTER: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity

The geographical ranges of many mammals and their associated parasites are dynamic. Comprehensive documentation of these communities over time provides a foundation for interpreting how changing environmental conditions, driven by accelerating climate change, other anthropogenic disturbances, and natural events, may influence host-parasite interactions. Fleas (Order Siphonaptera) are obligate, hematophagous parasites of birds and mammals with medical interest because of their role in transmitting pathogens. From 2016 to 2019, we sampled the small mammal and associated flea communities in El Malpais National Conservation Area (El Malpais) in Cibola County, New Mexico. Among 898 mammalian specimens, 925 fleas representing 29 species were …

Partial Characterization Of Plasmodium Falciparum Genes Implicated In Altered Artemisinin Stress Response, Caroline F. Simmons 2023 University of South Florida

Partial Characterization Of Plasmodium Falciparum Genes Implicated In Altered Artemisinin Stress Response, Caroline F. Simmons

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Malaria is a parasitic illness caused by the Plasmodium spp., with an estimated 247 million malaria cases reported in 2021 across 84 endemic countries. Treatment of the deadliest malaria parasite, P. falciparum, relies on artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs). However, while ACTs have greatly decreased malaria mortality, this progress is threatened due to artemisinin (ART) partial resistance and ACT failure in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. SNPs to the Kelch13 (K13) gene are a well-characterized marker for ART resistance. However, increasing evidence that resistance to ART mediated by genes not related to K13 SNPs prompts the need to characterize other novel …

Introduction The effect of testosterone (T) therapy on the vaginal microbiota of transgender men (TGM) is not well characterised, although one cross-sectional study comparing the vaginal microbiota of cisgender women to TGM on T≥1 year found that, in 71% of the TGM, the vaginal microbiota was less likely to be Lactobacillus-dominated and more likely to be enriched with >30 other bacterial species, many associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV). This prospective study aims to investigate changes in the composition of the vaginal microbiota over time in TGM who retain their natal genitalia (ie, vagina) and initiate T. In addition, we will …
