The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of supplemental fat from either dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) or raw corn oil on the digestibility of nutrients and long chain fatty acids. When compared to corn grain and grass hay, DDGS have considerably greater levels of fat, which may negatively influence rumen microbes and nutrient digestibility. The objective of this research was to determine shifts in metabolism associated with differences in marbling relative to total fatness in beef carcasses. Dietary starch is thought to optimize accumulation of intramuscular adipose (IAT). The two mechanisms used to alter IAT accumulation were to substitute either readily fermentable fiber or corn oil for starch from corn. The model involved yearling steers (n = 144) during a 131 d finishing phase. The control diet contained 8.5% roughage and 81.2% corn. A novel germ fraction is being generated by the BFrac™4 process. The 20% fat, dry, flowable material is a potential source of concentrated energy to include in Northern Plains feedlot diets. A metabolism study with wethers was conducted to evaluate how ruminants would respond to this additional fat intake in finishing diets. Total collections of urine and feces were conducted on 23 wethers fed pelleted, high‐corn content, iso‐nitrogenous diets that included 0, 10, 20, or 30% germ. Each 6‐d collection period followed 21 d adaptation periods. Increasing BFrac™ germ content caused (P < 0.01) an increase in DMI and a linear (P < 0.001) decrease in DM digestibility, probably due to the effect of DMI. There was a quadratic (P < 0.01) increase in EE digestibility, plateauing at 10% germ. Dietary DE, kcal/g declined linearly (P < 0.01) but DE intake (kcal/d) increased linearly (P < 0.05) because of higher DMI. There was no (P > 0.15) dietary effect on N digestibility, but there …

A de‐oiled distillers grains (dDGS) product was evaluated as a primary supplemental CP source in finishing diets. The 3 dietary treatments used were: SBM/Urea) as a control, typical of feedlot diets; dDGS) where dDGS replaced all of the SBM and some urea; and dDGS/SBM) where a 90% dDGS/10% SBM (N basis) blend was fed iso‐nitrogenous to the other diets. Eighteen pens of 8 steers each were fed these finishing diets for 132 d. There were no differences in steer performance or carcass traits attributable to diet. Locations of contaminant exposure for nesting migratory species are difficult to fully understand because of possible additional sources encountered during migration or on the wintering grounds. A portion of the migratory white-faced ibis (Plegadis chihi) nesting at Carson Lake, Nevada continues to be exposed to dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethylene (DDE) with no change, which is unusual, observed in egg concentrations between 1985 and 2000. About 45 to 63% of the earliest nesting segment shows reduced reproductive success correlated with elevated egg concentrations of > 4 µg/g wet weight (ww). Local prey (primarily earthworms) near nests contained little DDE so we tracked the migration and …

To evaluate the impact of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) on carcass cutability and tenderness of calf-fed Holstein steers, calf-fed Holstein carcasses (n = 102) were selected from a pool of 2,300 steers that were fed 0 or 8.3 mg/kg (DM basis) of ZH. Zilpaterol hydrochloride was supplemented the last 20 d of the finishing period and withdrawn for 3 d before slaughter. Carcasses were selected based on carcass weight as well as predetermined USDA Yield grade categories. ABSTRACT: Two studies using beef and calf-fed Holstein cattle were conducted to determine the effect of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) supplementation on the color of strip loin steaks packaged in traditional and modified-atmosphere packaging. Select (USDA) strip loins were obtained from the carcasses of beef (n = 118) or calf-fed Holstein (n = 132) cattle fed ZH (6.8 g/ton on a 90% DM basis) for the last 0, 20, 30, or 40 d of feeding. Preliminary Phylogeny Of The Thrips Parasitoids Of Turkey Based On Some Morphological Scales And 28s D2 Rdna, With Description Of A New Species, Oguzhan Doğanlar, Mi̇kdat Doğanlar, Anne Frary

Species of the Ceranisus thrips-attacking genus are difficult to distinguish morphologically. The phylogenetic relationships within the Ceranisus species were explored using nucleotide sequences of the 28S D2 expansion region of the rDNA gene. Bayesian, maximum likelihood, and parsimony inference methods were employed to construct the phylogenetic relationships. Principal component analysis on the Turkish species of Ceranisus, namely antalyacus, menes, bozovaensis, hirsutus, planitianus (a new record for Turkey), pacuvius, and a new species, provided supporting evidence. All known data concerning hosts and geographical distribution are presented. A new species, C. onuri O. Doganlar, sp.n., was described from Turkey.

A new species belonging to the genus Helochares Mulsant, 1844 (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) is described on the basis of a single male specimen collected in Ordu province, Turkey. The species is described and an identification key to the species of the Helochares lividus group is provided. In addition, Helochares pallens MacLeay, 1825 and Hydrobius convexus Brullé, 1835 are recorded in Turkey for the first time.

A new species of Acherontacarus (Acari, Hydrachnidia), Acherontacarus anatolicus n.sp., is described from a small stream in Isparta province (southern Turkey). This is the first record of the genus from Turkey; distributional data of the known species are discussed.

Ninety-one eastern spadefoot toads, Pelobates syriacus, were collected from 3 localities in Turkey between 1993 and 2003 and examined for helminths. One species of Monogenea (Polystoma sp.) and 3 species of Nematoda (Aplectana brumpti, Oxysomatium brevicaudatum, Skrjabinelazia taurica) were found. Pelobates syriacus represents a new host record for Polystoma sp. and S. taurica.

Abraxas pantaria (L.) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), the spotted ash looper (Light Magpie), is recognized as a new pest of common ash, Fraxinus excelsior (L.) in the eastern part of Turkey. Description of different developmental stages of A. pantaria is given. Its development, biology, damage, and parasitoids were studied in the field (Aras Valley, Karakurt, Sarıkamış, Kars Province) and partly in the laboratory during 2004-2006. A short review of the family Damaeolidae Grandjean, 1965 is provided with the first records of Damaeolus asperatus (Berlese, 1904) and Damaeolus ornatissimus Csiszár, 1962 from Turkey. Possibilities for the management of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) on stored products using coloured lighting systems was assessed in this study. Adult beetles were exposed in a choice chamber to red, blue, green, and clear tungsten light. T. castaneum adults preferred tungsten, blue, and green lights, and avoided red light. For each colour, beetles were separately reared for 3 generations. Beetles preferred the colour in which they were reared, except for red, which was avoided even by the beetles reared in a red-coloured environment for 3 generations under duress.
