Agathis berkei sp. n. (Hym., Braconidae, Agathidinae) is described from Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Morphological diagnostic characters of the new species are figured, and they are compared with those of the related species Agathis fischeri Zettel and Beyarslan, 1992.

Sixty-three species belonging to 16 genera and 8 tribes collected from different ecosystems of Turkey between 1979 and 2007 were examined. Insects from 4 genera, Streblocera Westwood, Chrysopophthorus Goidanich, Elasmosoma Ruthe, and Marshiella Shaw, and the tribe Neoneurini Bengtsson were recorded for the first time in Turkey. Twenty-two species that had not previously been found in Turkey were observed in this study. Each of the 8 phytogeographical provinces in Turkey has a different Euphorinae faunal composition. Twenty-five species of Cephidae are reported from Turkey based on literature records and specimens collected mainly from Central Anatolia. Of these Cephus fumipennis Eversmann, C. nigrinus Thomson, C. pulcher Tischbein, C. rjabovi Dovnar-Zapolskij, C. sareptanus Dovnar-Zapolskij, C. spinipes (Panzer), Calameuta (Calameuta) filiformis (Eversmann), C. (Calameuta) punctata (Klug), Hartigia linearis (Schrank), and H. xanthostoma (Eversmann) are recorded for the first time both in Central Anatolia and Turkey. A checklist of the family, including new records, is provided. Distribution patterns of the species in relation to the last glacial age are discussed.

This study compared the protein, lipid, and glycogen reserves in recently emerged unfed female and male Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) to those in 5- and 10-day-old wasps fed honey. Galleria mellonella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were used as host species. The mean level of protein in both sexes increased significantly from emergence to day 5, and then returned to emergence levels on day 10 in females, but remained constant in males during the same period. The distribution of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in Cricetulus migratorius and Meriones tristrami from Central Anatolia was determined. In the karyotype of Cricetulus migratorius the diploid number, fundamental number, and fundamental autosomal number are 22, 44, and 40, respectively. The diploid number, fundamental number, and fundamental autosomal number of Meriones tristrami are 72, 84, and 80, respectively. In Cricetulus migratorius, NORs occur in the telomeric regions of metacentric and subtelocentric autosome pairs. Furthermore, terminally located NORs in metacentric and acrocentric autosomes of Meriones tristrami are presented in this present paper.

A total of 41 freshwater ostracod species belonging to 21 genera was collected from 144 different aquatic bodies in the Bolu region during the summer of 2006. The genus Schellencandona and 12 species (Candona weltneri, C. sanociensis, C. lactea, Fabaeformiscandona cf. breuili, F. balatonica, F. brevicornis, F. protzi, F. latens, Schellencandona cf. belgica, Pseudocandona cf. semicognita, Potamocypris similis, and P. smaragdina) are new for the Turkish Ostracoda fauna. This study examined the atrioventricular conducting system in 4 adult male hedgehogs (Hemiechinus auritus). The histological structure of these components was studied using routine histological methods. The AVN was located at the lower and anterior part of the interatrial septum, near the root of the aorta. It was almost oval and consisted of twisted cells. Several papers have shown the sensitivity of birds as monitors of climatic trends. We examined how a short-distance migrant bird, the wood pigeon, has responded to the recent climate change using data from a long-term study (1983-2007) in northwestern Croatia. The wood pigeon arrival dates have become 11.5 days earlier during the study period. This result suggests that the first arrival date of the wood pigeon is influenced by warm springs.

Scaldfish (Arnoglossus laterna) (n = 1892) were caught in İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea) from January 2005 to December 2006. Total length and weight of all specimens ranged from 3.9 to 16.0 cm and from 0.47 to 41.63 g, respectively. The overall ratio of females to males was 1:1.91. Fifteen African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822) were collected from the River Asi (River Orontes) in Antakya (Hatay, Turkey) in November 2007, and fish blood samples were examined for the presence of blood parasites. The existence of infection with Trypanosoma (hemoparasite) was identified in 13 out of the 15 fish specimens. Currently there are no records of the presence of any species of Trypanosoma infecting Clarias gariepinus in Anatolia. Thus this study is the first report of Trypanosoma sp. infections in Clarias gariepinus in Turkey.

The ecological characteristics of ostracods in Lake Sünnet were monitored monthly between May 2005 and September 2007; 9 living and 5 subfossil ostracod taxa were recorded. Among the species, Ilyocypris getica was reported in Turkey for the first time, while Stenocypria fischeri was found for the second time in the country in 55 years. The most abundant species, Limnocythere inopinata, was collected in dry and wet months, while I. bradyi was the only species found in only the wet months. Age, growth, and reproduction of the large-scaled gurnard were studied in the central Aegean Sea to provide fisheries managers with the essential data for science-based management. A total of 2342 samples were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and June 2007 from İzmir Bay (Turkey). This study considers the effects of 120 h exposure of embryos and larvae of the red-bellied toad, Bombina bombina, to trifluralin, an herbicide, with renewal acute toxicity tests at 22 ± 1 °C. The aim of the present study was to describe the mollusk syntaxon associated with Cystoseira barbata and Mytilus galloprovincialis facies, which are widely distributed along the coasts of the Sinop Peninsula, Turkey. A chromosomal study of 2 populations of Allactaga williamsi from Konya province in Central Anatolia, Turkey, was performed. The diploid number of 48 chromosomes was found in all of the 5 specimens examined. All of the chromosomes except the Y were biarmed and could be identified by unique G-banding patterns. The C-banding analysis revealed a considerable amount of constitutive heterochromatin in all chromosomes. The C-band positive regions were distributed mainly in centromeric areas, whereas the Y chromosome stained uniformly and C-negatively.
