Enriched or “designer” chicken eggs have emerged as an important category of functional foods aimed at improving human nutrition through dietary manipulation of laying hens. This mini-review summarizes recent advances in egg enrichment strategies, focusing on omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant compounds. Omega-3 enrichment remains the most widely adopted approach, achieved through supplementation with flaxseed, fish oil, or microalgae, resulting in significant increases in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in egg yolk. Multi-nutrient enrichment, including selenium, vitamin E, and carotenoids, has also gained attention due to its potential in enhancing antioxidant capacity and health of hens …

In this study, we aimed to establish species-specific reference values for intraocular pressure (IOP) in clinically healthy collared scops owls (Otus lettia) using rebound tonometry. Twelve free-living owls were included, and twentyfour eyes were examined. All owls were physically restrained in an upright position without sedation. Intraocular pressure was measured in both eyes using rebound tonometry (TONOVET; iCare Finland Oy, Vantaa, Finland) in d mode. Grass and leaf meals, which include vital phytocompounds, have the potential to be a natural and safe alternative to antibiotics in the poultry industry. Therefore, this study aims to assess Pennisetum purpureum leaf meal and its phytocompounds on the health performances of colored-broilers. Highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks, respiratory disease, heat stress, and silent equipment failures share one operational reality: they are detected too late because today’s poultry-health workflow is reactive, manual, and dependent on producers volunteering commercially sensitive data. This thesis presents a wake-on-anomaly federated architecture that addresses both the detection-latency problem and the privacy–adoption deadlock that has so far prevented cross-farm collaboration. Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) is a significant cause of lameness in commercial broilers, resulting in substantial animal welfare concerns and economic losses. This study evaluated the effect of 1,25(OH)₂D₃ glycoside supplementation duration on the incidence of BCO-related lameness in broilers. Cobb surplus male broiler chicks were assigned to four treatment groups: a wire-flooring positive control, a litter-flooring negative control, and two treatment groups on litter flooring receiving 1 μg 1,25(OH)₂D₃ as glycosides supplementation per kg diet for either 14 or 28 days. Commercial turkey production contributes significantly to the U.S. agricultural industry, yet studies on positive welfare indicators, especially play behavior, are limited. This study evaluated turkey hen interactions with two environmental enrichments (straw bales and pecking stones hung from the ceiling) and the expression of play behavior in turkey barns. Three commercial turkey hen barns were equipped with environmental enrichments and time-lapse video cameras. Ectoparasites, such as mosquitoes (Culicidae), blackflies (Simuliidae), and biting midges (Ceratopogonidae), have been shown to reduce population viability by lowering post-fledging survival and decreasing the lifetime reproductive success of adult birds. This issue is particularly concerning for songbirds such as the Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) because their nestlings are relatively naked and have limited mobility, making them highly vulnerable to attacks by biting flies. This study investigated growth performance and morphometric characteristics in three chicken genotypes namely Naked Neck (NN), Rhode Island Red (RIR), and Black Australorp (BAL). One-hundred and eighty chicks (age, day-old), comprising 60 birds from each genotype, were distributed randomly into three replicates per group, with 20 chicks per replicate, under a completely randomized design. Birds were reared on deep litter for 18 weeks. Hatch weights were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in BAL (30.7 g) and RIR (30.2 g) compared to NN (28.2 g). Body weights showed no significant differences (P > 0.05) from weeks 2 to 4, but BAL and RIR outperformed NN (P < 0.05) from weeks 6 to 10. BAL maintained the highest body weight from weeks 12 to 18 (P < 0.05). Total weight gain (0-18 weeks) was significantly greater in BAL (1567 g), followed by RIR (1491 g) and NN (1219 g). The genotypes had significant effects on both feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR; P < 0.05). At 18 weeks of age, FCR was most efficient in BAL (3.53), followed by RIR (3.83), and NN (4.85). Mortality between weeks 4 and 18 was lowest in NN at 1.7 %, compared with 1.81 % in RIR and 1.84 % in BAL. Significant differences (P < 0.05) among genotypes were also observed in morphometric characters such as shank length, keel length, and breast circumference, with BAL generally showing larger measurements. In conclusion, BAL exhibited superior growth, feed efficiency, and morphometric characteristics, while NN demonstrated lower weight gain but better survivability, highlighting genotype-specific advantages for different production goals.

The state and federally endangered light-footed Ridgway’s rail (LFRR; Rallus obsoletus levipes) is central to regional conservation, yet the drivers of its population fluctuations remain poorly understood. The fragmented nature of coastal wetlands in Southern California is threatening the existence of endemic species like the LFRR. Tidal inundation, severe storms, and overpredation threaten the survival of LFRR. This study addresses population fluctuations by analyzing the spatial and temporal drivers of LFRR populations to inform effective, site-specific management.
