Examining The Role Of Internal Planning Decisions In Improving Transit Performance And Economic Outcomes, Michal Jaroszynski
Examining The Role Of Internal Planning Decisions In Improving Transit Performance And Economic Outcomes, Michal Jaroszynski
PSU Transportation Seminars
Scholars and practitioners continuously seek best practices to increase transit ridership, efficiency, and modal share. The ongoing suburbanization and decentralization of U.S. metropolitan regions brings new challenges for accomplishing these goals. Investigating possible strategies for improving transit outcomes in the existing socioeconomic setting, scholars from the Florida State University have pointed to the role of internal performance factors. In a series of research studies, they have found that improving transit service characteristics, such as frequency, connectivity, regional coverage, intermodal integration, as well as decentralization of network structures, could result in increased transit ridership and productivity. These positive effects could be …

Using "Big Data" For Transportation Analysis: A Case Study Of The La Metro Expo Line, Mohja L. Rhoads
Using "Big Data" For Transportation Analysis: A Case Study Of The La Metro Expo Line, Mohja L. Rhoads
PSU Transportation Seminars
Access to a comprehensive historical archive of real-time, multi-modal multi-agency transportation system data has provided a unique opportunity to demonstrate how “big data” can be used for policy analysis, and to offer new insights for planning scholarship and practice. We illustrate with a case study of a new rail transit line. We use transit, freeway, and arterial data of high spatial and temporal resolution to examine transportation system performance impacts of the Exposition (Expo) light rail line (Phase 1) in Los Angeles. Using a quasi-experimental research design, we explore whether the Expo Line has had a significant impact on transit …

Analisa Kesenjangan Prevalensi Stunting Antar Kawasan Di Indonesia Serta Faktor Yang Mempengaruhinya, Melyana Lumbantoru, Hera Susanti
Jurnal Kebijakan Ekonomi
Stunting is an indicator for chronic nutritional status that can provide a picture of overall socio-economic disruption in the past, starting from six months old infant and continue until the age of 18 years and can not be corrected again. The study concluded that infant growth monitoring, access to sanitation, health budget allocation per capita, income per capita and female literacy rate are significantiy reducing the occurrence of stunting. While the Theil index shows that the number of stunting is increasingly dispersed throughout Indonesia. At the regional level, the total disparity for stunting tends to decrease. In 2007, 2010 and …

Perdagangan Bebas Versus Proteksionisme, Lepi T. Tarmidi

For the past 20 years the world has seen a proliferation of Regional Free Trade Agreements. Some Indonesian economists are criticizing the negative effects of this “neo-liberal” thinking, instead they promote measures of protection to defend domestic industries. Every citizen must bea patriotand a nationalist, and not be a servant of great foreign economic powers. However, the greater majority of economists are for the idea of free trade, since it can bring prosperity to the people through the gains from trade. These economists are also nationalists. However, the controversy between free trade and protectionism has a long history, since the …

Go Before You Go: How Public Toilets Impact Public Transit Usage, Kate M. Washington
Go Before You Go: How Public Toilets Impact Public Transit Usage, Kate M. Washington
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
The emphasis on sustainable solutions in Portland, Oregon includes developing multi-modal transportation methods. Using public transit means giving up a certain amount of control over one’s schedule and taking on a great deal of uncertainty when it comes to personal hygiene. Buses, the MAX, and the Streetcar – the cornerstones of public transit in Portland – are not equipped with toilets and rarely are their stations, while most shops and restaurants reserve toilets for patrons only. As a result, many people may bypass public transit in favor of cars, which afford travelers greater autonomy and flexibility. Theories of New Urbanism …

Bilingual Typography: Study Of The Linguistic Landscape Of Jeddah, Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Shayna Tova Blum
Faculty and Staff Publications
Abstract: With the rise of globalization and the spread of Western culture across the globe, the use of English as an “international” language is often represented in bilingual and multilingual typographic signage. Throughout the Middle East North Africa and the Gulf region, the integration of Arabic and Latin letterforms is commonly viewed within the signage of storefronts, street signs, advertising billboards, and informational materials. This paper explores the use of bilingual/multilingual typography within the linguistic landscape of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Land Rights Among Subsistence Farmers: An Examination Of Madagascar’S Land Reform And Prevailing Systems Of Land Tenure In Betafo, Taylor Crowl
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In Madagascar, legal systems of land tenure have been inaccessible for the vast majority of the rural population. This has stranded millions of subsistence farmers in a sense of insecurity, as they lack legal rights for the property that they have farmed for generations. Madagascar’s land reform, launched in 2005, attempted to change these exclusionary tenure practices. This reform —known as the Plan National Foncier—created land certificates and local land offices in an attempt to make legal land tenure financially, geographically, and logistically accessible to the local population. This study discusses the successes, failures, and unforeseen consequences of Madagascar’s land …

The Amphibious Public: A Historical Geography Of Municipal Swimming And Bathing New York City, 1870 - 2013, Naomi Miriam Adiv
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since 1870, the city of New York has engaged in a project of building and maintaining enclosed sites for municipal bathing, including building floating `river baths' (1870 - 1942), indoor municipal baths (1901 - 1975), eleven enormous outdoor pools built with WPA funds (1936 - present), and outdoor pools of various sizes built under the Lindsay administration (1968 - present). This dissertation explores the changing rationale, over almost 150 years, for the municipal construction of public bathing places in New York City, and the ways in which the physical structures have taken on new social goals, meanings and ideals, both …

Public Space--Urban Spaces Of Multiple And Diverse Publics, Antti Moelsae
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Shopping centers, hotel lobbies and - as was recently reported - McDonald's restaurants have been appropriated as social and political spaces by the public, but then encounter resistance by the owners of those spaces. Shopping centers, which have come to replace urban public space around the world, are notorious for limiting the modes of use and actively prohibiting forms of political expression. The legal status of commercial spaces that substitute for traditional public spaces is still unclear. Much of the critique of privatization of public space has been directed towards these enclosed spaces, the ownership of which is unambiguously private. …

Regional Water Providers Consortium Population, Housing Unit, And Household Forecasts 2014 To 2045, Charles Rynerson, Kevin Christopher Rancik
Publications, Reports and Presentations
Water providers have an ongoing need for estimates and forecasts of the total population and the number of housing units and households within their service areas. While some of the water providers within Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties have obtained this information periodically on an individual basis, a complete and systematic set of estimates and forecasts for all members of the Regional Water Providers Consortium has not been prepared for nearly 10 years. The Portland Water Bureau (PWB), on behalf of the Regional Water Providers Consortium, requested that the Portland State University Population Research Center (PRC) update service area boundaries …
Improving Public Health Safety Nets After An Economic Recession, Sanjay Basu
Improving Public Health Safety Nets After An Economic Recession, Sanjay Basu
Center for Policy Research
When we say ‘here’s what’s going on with our nation’s health,’ how do we know the answer? Where is the data coming from? How can we best evaluate our public health system? We’re talking about it every day on CNN given the Ebola scare. What do we mean by our ‘public health system’? I would argue that we should expand our definition to mean something more than hospitals and clinics, or doctors and nurses. In particular, I’ll argue that some of our non-health programs that we have as part of the safety net actually make a bigger health impact than …

“Put The Church Right There”: A Study Of The Inclusion Of Congregational Structures Within New Urbanist Developments, Matthew L. Pierce
“Put The Church Right There”: A Study Of The Inclusion Of Congregational Structures Within New Urbanist Developments, Matthew L. Pierce
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Beginning with the development of Seaside (Walton County, FL), Kentlands (Gaithersburg, MD), and Laguna West (Elk Grove, CA), New Urbanist developments have set aside parcels for civic structures, many of which now house congregations. Using interviews with developers, planners, and church officials, this thesis examines the rationale behind including congregations within New Urbanist developments in four southeastern states (Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina). The expectations of New Urbanist developers largely mirror those found within key New Urbanist texts: congregational structures help create a legible landscape through typological architecture and conspicuous siting while providing space for public gathering. The …
Occupy Wall Street's Challenge To An American Public Transcript, Christopher Neville Leary
Occupy Wall Street's Challenge To An American Public Transcript, Christopher Neville Leary
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the rhetoric and discourses of the anti-corporate movement Occupy Wall Street, using frameworks from political ethnography and critical discourse analysis to offer a thick, triangulated description of a single event, Occupy Wall Street's occupation of Zuccotti Park. The study shows how Occupy achieved a disturbing positionality relative to the forces which routinely dominate public discourse and proposes that Occupy's encampment was politically intolerable to the status quo because the movement held the potential to consolidate critical thought and action. Because the "soft" means of re-capturing public consent were weak in 2011 because of the 2008 economic collapse, …

Cuyahoga County’S Tax-Base Challenge: Renewing And Redeveloping Core Communities, Thomas Bier, Charlie Post
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Two major factors threaten the well-being of Cuyahoga County: the approaching build-out of its outer suburbs, which will severely limit tax-base growth through new construction, and the aged condition of inner suburbs, which jeopardizes property values. The situation calls for unprecedented cooperative action among elected officials to secure the county’s future.
Recent changes in the value of real estate in Cuyahoga County compared with adjacent counties shows the seriousness of the situation and the criticality of the primary course of action: redevelopment and renewal in Cleveland and inner suburbs.

Chronic poor health within inner cities is usually the result of prolonged exposure to a multitude of health disparities. These disparities, are exacerbated by poverty, high unemployment, crime and youth violence. In many cases, these factors increase neighborhood instability and civic disengagement. Community garden programs can strengthen civic engagement and foster neighborhood stability, while simultaneously cutting down on youth violence. Community garden programs address the accumulation of health challenges in many ways and provide curative building blocks to deal with poor nutrition, obesity, diabetes, psychological disorders, and deficient growth of infants, substance abuse, civic detachment and suicide rate.
